Tatonka Lodge, 2 Master Suites on a Buffalo Ranch!
- Minimum stay:2-7 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Looking to get away to the mountains with your family? Tatonka Lodge is the perfect choice for large families, or groups, traveling together!
Our custom log home sits on a private 65 acre buffalo ranch. Enjoy viewing our buffalo when you drive in or stop by in the morning at feeding time! The cabin was completed in early 2008 and is over 3500 square feet, plenty of room for everyone to spread out. So, whether you are looking to hit the slopes at Cataloochee Ski Resort in Maggie Valley (only 12 miles away) or visit the Biltmore Estate in Asheville (only 30 minutes), there is plenty for everyone to do in The Great Smoky Mountains!
Tatonka Lodge, (Indian word for buffalo), is ideal for large families vacationing together because we have 2 master suites which each have private doors leading to the back deck with a fantastic mountain view.
Once inside, you will be in awe of the huge stone fireplace in the great room, surrounded by plenty of seating area for a large group. Also, rest assured the children will be well entertained downstairs in the game room where we have a life size chess set, pool table, air hockey, ping pong & foosball. Also enjoy an evening in our 8 person hot tub out back!
Children will love the hike through the woods to the brand new play area, The BC Corral! This custom designed area has everything from swings, zip line, slides, teeter toter, cargo nets, rock wall & even a horse shoe pit for the adults! The kids will love it here!
If you are looking for a quiet 'get away from it all' retreat, this is it! Enjoy long hikes on the property, fishing on the Pigeon River (within walking distance from the log cabin) or take a trip into town to do some shopping or antiquing.
We are pet friendly, size doesn't matter!
Fun things to do: Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, Biltmore Estate, Ghost Town, hiking at Chimney Rock, tubing at Deep Creek, Fun Factory, Indoor skydiving, visit the Elk in Cataloochee Park, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Casino in Cherokee, slide down the rocks at Sliding Rock in the Pisgah National Forest, downhill skiing, snowboarding & tubing at Cataloochee Ski Resort, golf at Waynesville Country Club, Maggie Valley Country Club or Ironduff Golf Course!
We hope many wonderful memories will be made while vacationing at Tatonka Lodge!

WOW!! We just had an absolutely fabulous time at Tatonka Lodge. Everything was just as we expected, however the pictures did not do it justice. From the beauty of the woodwork, to the paradise we found outside. We did not want to leave. We tried the bison steaks one evening & loved them! We also had some of the families farm fresh eggs. What a treat! Cheryl was so easy to deal w/ & always answered my emails very promptly. We will definitely book Tatonka Lodge the next time we come visit the Smoky Mountains! Oh yeah, my kids loved the Buffalo stuffed animals, they have slept w/ them every night since we got home.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

We vacationed at Tatonka Lodge in February & had an awesome time. We took the kids skiing for the 1st time at Cataloochee Ski Area & they loved it! When we got to the cabin we were amazed at the beauty of it. It was very well kept (I had read the previous review & have no idea what they were talking about, wondered if they even stayed at the same place!!). This cabin had everything you needed to cook which we liked. The kids all enjoyed the game room, hot tub, roasting smore’s over the fire pit & seeing all the animals. We hope to be back & make more memories at Tatonka Lodge, thanks again for everything!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks Bianca for taking the time to leave us some feedback. Glad to hear you all enjoyed your Smoky Mountain Vacation. Hope to see you again soon! Cheryl

We stayed at Tatonka Lodge with family friends for a great ski getaway. The home has plenty to entertain kids of all ages, and the owners were quick to respond to any questions we had. The location is good. 15-20 minutes from Cataloochee, 10-15 from the grocery store, restaurants, etc. It had rained before we came, so we didn't do a lot of hiking, but would love to return in the fall. Great spot for family getaways, girls' weekend, etc. The lodge is on a ranch with a single lane dirt road and the home sits on a steep hill -- just be prepared when consdering which vehicle to take.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway.
Owner response: Dear Cheryl, So glad to hear you all enjoy your stay & we would love to see you all again in the fall. Thank you for taking the time to sign our guest book. Sincerely, Cheryl :)

We stayed at Tatonka Lodge last month, and what a wonderful experience it was. This lodge was extremely spacious, squeaky clean, and absolutely homey. The property and the view was exceptional. Also the owners were very respectful, welcoming and friendly towards us. (I still cannot believe the owners built this place themselves.) The fully stocked kitchen had everything we ever needed and more. The owners made sure we had plenty firewood, and stacked them up often by the house. We truly enjoyed our morning coffees on the patio, our afternoon hikes, and visiting with the animals, as well as our nights by the fire, making smores. Being in the military, we have traveled a lot, and stayed at many many different lodges and cabins. I can quickly admit without hesitation, this place became our favorite as soon as we walked through the front door. We are looking forward to our next visit this upcoming fall.Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Idil, We thank you for your service to our country. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay & would love to see you back this fall. I appreciate you taking time to sign our online guest book. Sincerely, Cheryl

Upon arrival at Tatonka Lodge it was immediately evident that cleaning was not a top priority here. I had to call to get someone to come clean all the hard floors upstairs because they were mopped with a filthy mop and had a sticky muddy film all over. We could not even walk without our shoes sticking to the floor. There was urine all around the toliet in the left hand side master suite, the dishes we cooked on had to be washed before we used them and the card table upstairs was full of crumbs and food. And most horribly, when we turned down the covers to go to bed, they were not tucked in on the corners and a large wad of black hair was right in the middle of the sheets! No way a cleaning crew with eyes could have missed these things! I am suspious the sheets weren't even removed and laundered from the previous guests. To top it all off, I was charged $25 for some "clothing tags" that were not put in the outside trash receptacle and because the bed blanket was put downstairs with the nasty sheets! And we were accused of chipping the K-mart dishes which is absolutely not true. You have got to be kidding me!!! GRRRRRR We travel often and stay in "Luxury" accomodations and this is the poorest example of cleanliness I have experienced. I am a 46 year old business owner, not some spoiled college kid partying, so I expect more for my money.Owner response: Dear Vickie, I am very sorry you feel this way. Unfortunately, the guest who left before you spilt beer all over, our cleaners re-mopped it 3x's & I am very sorry there was still residue. As soon as you called I had someone come over to try & get i it up as well as a spot you told me you saw on the toilet. That was all you said. After you left, my cleaners reported that it was left trashed. I'm sorry that you feel you have to leave a review like this because I deducted $25 for all the trash you left around our cabin as well as other things. We have been renting for 5 years & have over 70 5 out of 5 ratings. We take pride in our cabins & we do not hire out just any cleaning company but they are part owners of Buffalo Creek. I am sorry your vacation ended like this. Sincerely, Cheryl

We had such a wonderfully relaxing time at Tatonka. The children were well entertained by all the activities in the home, the animals as well as the hot tub! The house is well stocked with anything you would need. Although we did leave to ski at Cataloochee Mountain and visit Asheville, we looked forward to getting back to the house and sitting in front of a roaring fire. The weekend was excellent and the home is beautiful. We would certainly recommend Tatonka to anyone!Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, families with teenagers.

Wow! Totally blown away by the beauty of this property. We totally lucked out with snow the entire weekend. We snow skied on Friday, shot guns at Fowler Farms on Saturday and went into Asheville for a night of food and music. Basically one of the best "guy trips" I've ever been on. I would recommend the "Tatonka Lodge" to anyone and plan to be back with the wife and kids very soon.Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Amazing trip. Loved the size and layout of the house. Plenty to do in and around the house for 11 people. Enjoyed the free firewood and the hot tub especially. All the surrounding wildlife was definitely a plus. Also liked how close we were to a grocery store and skiing.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.

The house was absolutely beautiful. It was warm and charming and had all the natural touches of a log cabin. It was spaceous enough for two families with teenage kids and had ample space for additional guests if needed. The house was clean and very well kept. When you visit, you must check out the photo album of the cabin inthe construction phase--awesome. The only problem we encountered was the road up the cabin--in the winter you really need a truck. They were kind enough to grade the road with a tractor which made it much easier to access the home which made the view all worth it!!!Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Bobbie, I am glad you all enjoyed Tatonka Lodge. Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback. We also have plans to pave the rest of our road this year as well. :) Cheryl

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: My brothers & my husband had shared a vision of expanding my fathers buffalo ranch when additional property became available to purchase. With all our knowledge & experiences combine we have built 3 log homes & have been renting them out since 2004. All the furniture in this cabin has been handmade by the wood on the property! Even the covered wagon bed, that was custom built my my father. Once my husband retires from the US Army in about 8 yrs our dream will be to build our log cabin on the property & be more hands on. God has blessed us beyond our wildest dreams. We hope you love the mountains like we have all come to love being transplants from a very flat NY!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
While staying at Tatonka Lodge we feel you will really enjoy the peace & tranquility of being secluded on 65 acres. So many of our previous guest have wrote back & told us they had all these plans to sight see but then just loved hanging out in the cabin together enjoying the big game room & the children all love the uniquely designed playground as well as seeing the miniature horse, buffalo, goats & llamas.
