Great Memories from Tatonka Lodge!

Guest: Sally (Canton, GA)
Date of Stay: 02/23/12 Review Submitted: 03/09/12

We had a group of three families who stayed at this beautiful lodge in Feb. and we had a wonderful time. The home is beautiful with so many fun things to keep adults and children busy.. The women enjoyed daily walks down to the PIgeon River and I loved seeing the animals along the way. Highly recommend for families. Thanks for a great time!

A Great Family Christmas

Guest: Sandy (Atlanta, Georgia)
Date of Stay: 12/16/11 Review Submitted: 01/03/12

Our family of 12 (8 adults and 4 children) gathered at the Tatonka Lodge for our Christmas holiday. We all agree that the Lodge will be a place that our family will frequent in years to come. It comes fully equipped with everything needed for a family retreat including a play ground that was a big hit with our grandchildren and a basement full of adult toys such as pooltable, table tennis, air hockey just to name a few. The outdoor hottub with the firepit was a favorite of all ages. Everything was as presented to us and we even got a chance to watch the buffalo being feed and take a ride on a pony. Thanks for a wonderful holiday vacation.

Owner response:Thanks Sandra, so glad you all had a wonderful Christmas at Tatonka Lodge! We would love to have you back anytime!

BEAUTIFUL cabin and view. Craftsmanship in everything,,, will still notice new things after days of arriving. Warm and inviting, heated tile in the bathroom, comfort on every level, kitchen fully equipped, grocery store close by. EXTREMELY clean and superbly kept up. Good place to mix teens and small children. Photos of property do not do it justice, have to see it to believe. Better love the company you are with because you are not going to want to leave!

This place is breathtaking! The lodge, the property, and all the special touches they took to make it feel like home, makes this a vacation that we will never forget. There was nothing spared when building this lodge is beautifully handcrafted and tastefully decorated to suit the season. I loved the heated tile floors, the bedding, the huge fireplace (w/ wood provided), the comfy furniture, and hot tub. The only problem was that we didn't have more time there.

Awesome Mountain Retreat

Guest: Chad (GA)
Date of Stay: 11/04/11 Review Submitted: 11/13/11

We took our college team to Tatonka Lodge and had a wonderful time. We also rented the Bison Overlook Lodge which is just down the hill. Both properties were beautiful and very well maintained. The hot tubs were clean and the space in each home was great. With 14 people in Tatonka and 8 in Bison Overlook we never felt cramped. The playground is awesome for kids and all ages enjoyed seeing the Buffalo up close. With pool, air hockey, ping pong and foosball there is plenty of entertainment. It had just rained so we were concerned about accessibility but we were able to get a minivan and a 15 passenger van to both locations. Last but not least, Cheryl is great to deal with. She was easy to contact, answered all of our questions and was prompt in returning our deposit.

A Great Way to Celebrate a Special Anniversary with Family!

Guest: Pam (Clemmons)
Date of Stay: 09/16/11 Review Submitted: 09/23/11

Our family of 12 stayed at the Tatonka Lodge to celebrate our parents' 50th Anniversary. There were 6 adults and 6 youth and plenty of space and activities to keep us busy. A lot of time was spent in the game room. The boys especially loved playing ping-pong and pool. We all enjoyed the hot tub and firepit in the evenings. We took a hike down the hill and saw various animals. It was nice to have two master suites. We meet some of the owners who were very friendly and Cheryl is great to work with too. I would stay here again.

Beautiful Vacation in the Smokies!

Guest: Angela H. (Central NC)
Date of Stay: 08/13/11 Review Submitted: 08/31/11

My family consisting of myself and my husband, two children, and mother-in-law just returned from a memorable vacation in the Smokies, thanks in large part to our stay at Tatonka Lodge. When we arrived one of the first things that struck us, was the wonderful smell - the ENTIRE house smells of freshly cut wood. The wood is everywhere! We were just in love with all of the wood, one of my personal favorites were the TREES in the living room, yes I said TREES. There are entire trees used as support beams in the living room - Amazing! We were also very impressed by the cleanliness of the entire house. We felt very comfortable to take our shoes off and relax. Other features we loved were the game room and hot tub! We had so much fun soaking in the pristine hot tub after a fun day of sight seeing! We tried all of the various gaming tables, they were also a lot of fun! Trails around the property are very nice, and the playground was a HUGE hit with our children, as were the animals all around the property. Our youngest was given the opportunity to ride two of the miniature horses. Cheryl's parents Harriet and Harold were so hospitable to let her ride them. Suffice it to say, that was definitely a highlight of her trip, as well as ours. The location of Tatonka made it so easy to access all of the area attractions! We loved the Biltmore House and Cataloochee Valley in the Smokey Mountain National park. The many waterfalls in the area were magiacal! We also had a lot of fun travelling the area roads and just enjoying the scenic views. We drove quite a few miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and it was truly breathtaking! We even made the drive to Dollywood - FUN, with an unexpected stop at the Forbidden Caverns on the way which was nice. We tried several of the local restaurants. The Stable Cafe at Biltmore was unique, although the food was not that impressive ( good pimento cheese though)! Sweet Onion had some decent dishes, but they were a little overpriced, and my husband who is a filet mignon conoisseur said that his tasted like a roast. The star of their show were the cheese biscuits - delicious! I am pretty sure that everyone's favorite restaurant was a place in Asheville called Papas and Beer. They serve amazing mexican food at wonderful prices! We enjoyed them twice during our stay! The enchildas pablanos is wonderful! I have to say that this was definitely one of our most memorable vacations to date! We can't wait for our next trip to Tatonka Lodge!!

Owner response:It was a pleasure having you & your family Angela, thank you for the kind words. We look forward to having you back again sometime.

AMAZING!!!!

Guest: Kalcounos Family (Florida and Maryland)
Date of Stay: 08/03/11 Review Submitted: 08/23/11

We had an amazing stay at the Tatonka Lodge. We had 12 people (7 adults and 5 kids). The lodge was in perfect working condition as well as being SO clean. We all wished that we stayed one more day just to enjoy the cabin. The owners were SO sweet and were easy to work with when we "city slickers" couldn't figure out how to turn on the hot tub (kind of ashamed to admit that). The animals around the lodge added additional excitement to the experience we were looking for. I would not only come back but I would recommend this lodge to anyone and everyone!!!!

Owner response:Thank you Andrew for your nice comments...glad to see you guys had a great time at Tatonka Lodge!

Best Vacation Ever!!

Date of Stay: 07/23/11 Review Submitted: 08/05/11

Our family has been visiting the Maggie Valley area since the early 90s. Of all the places we have rented, Tatonka Lodge is our favorite. The house is just beautiful...all the natural wood...the spaciousness...decor...cleanliness...well-stocked kitchen...game room...hot tub...playground...fishing/wading in the Pigeon River...the animals...each feature made it a fantastic vacation for each of us. Most of all we enjoyed staying at the cabin, but we did have a great day riding the train on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. We also had fun shopping in Maggie Valley and having a fantastic breakfast at Joey's Pancake House. The nine of us are already hoping to spend a future vacation week on the buffalo ranch.

Owner response:Marsha, it was wonderful having you at Tatonka Lodge...thank you for your kind words. Cheryl

We have been to Tatonka Lodge twice now. 2010 was only a month after my husband passed away. Such a difficult time but the beauty and life that surrounds the Lodge brought hope. This year we choose it again, the anniversary of his death. We used that time to contemplate, relax, remember. You are so close to heaven there that it can't help but restore hope for the future. I look at all of those magnificent windows and know that the light that shines through is the light of hope, peace and promise for whatever life brings.

This is a great cabin with a lot of space. We only had 3 couples and it was more than enought space for everyone. This cabin is about 10-15 minutes from the ski resort and about 5-7 minutes from the grocery store. Our dog had a blast running around. I WOULD RECOMMENT THIS CABIN TO EVERYONE AND WE WILL COME BACK NEXT YEAR!

We had a wonderful time here at Tatonka Lodge with our children & grandchildren. They all enjoyed the fort & all the goats, rabbits horses. It's a fabulous plase to explore nature & they took full advantage! The lodge worked out perfectly-its so warm & inviting & conducive to family gatherings. On the last day the children got to ski at Cataloochee which was the highlight of the trip. We made memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.

We stayed at Tatonka Lodge, and my brother and family were at the smaller house. The houses are completely equipped, the entertainment facilities in the house (life size chess, pool table, pingpong, on and on) were fabulous and well used. The hot tub was much enjoyed by some, the outdoor firepit was a great evening too. Thanks for the smores! The goats, rabbits, horses enetertained everyone, just loved seeing the little ones enjoy them, and the llamas too. We cooked, ate, walked, explored, used the playground, and enjoyed the views. All in all, a great trip.

This was a GREAT lodge and owners were easy to communicate with. Thanks for being pet friendly --- our dogs enjoyed the adventure! People aren't kidding about a difficult hill to drive up, but all our vehicles made it (some more easily than others). Easy proximity to Asheville and outdoor adventure while still feeling the seclusion of a cabin in the beautiful Smokies! Kids loved the playground. Hope to make it back again :o) Also, it is hard to find a large rental home in the mountains with disability access --- my Mom has a heart condition and she did great at this place staying in one of two master bedrooms on main level.

We planned over a year ago to come to Tatonka. Everyone was looking forward to it. My husband got sick during Thanksgiving 2009 by Feb. 2010 he was having chemo. He still really wanted to come so we contiuned to keep our plans. Unfortunately he died on Father's Day 2010. We had our 1st grandson born on the 4th of July. Along w/ my 2 granddaughters, ages 7 & 3, my daughter & her husband, my son & his wife & their 3 week old newborn, we decided to come anyway. My husband would have LOVED this place. He grew up on a farm & he would have felt very at home here. We are very glad we came & are talking about coming back next year.

The cabin was wonderful. Just exactly what we had hoped for. The only amenity that we wished it had was television in the bedrooms. The cabin was beautifully decorated and very clean. We loved being close to Maggie Valley and Cherokee. The grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed feeding the goats, bunnies and the llamas. Watching the bison was a very special treat for them also. The quiet evenings in the hot tub was just what we needed and we enjoyed roasting hot dogs and marshmallows in the fire pit. As close to heaven as you can get!! We are planning on going back and the owners make you feel right at home!!

Our family stayed at Tatonka Lodge for a week in June 2010. The kids (and adults!) absolutely loved the awesome game room in the basement, and it was also so much fun to visit the animals (llamas, goats, bunnies, miniature horses) down the driveway. A word about the driveway -- it is dirt and fairly steep, so be prepared! It took a couple tries to get my Honda Civic up there. Anyway, the lodge was clean and obviously very well maintained. The decorating was done beautifully. We enjoyed visiting Asheville, Waynesville, and the Smoky Mountains National Park (all were within approximately 30 minutes of the cabin). A great vacation! Thanks to the Tatonka Lodge owners for everything!

We started out at Buffalo Overlook, and were disappointed; however, Cheryl and her crew were so very nice and dedicated to our satisfaction that they allowed us to move to Tatonka. What a world of difference! We were there in June 2010. The lodge is fantastic. The view from the parking deck is breathtaking. My 15 year old son fell in love with the loft. Since we covered areas from Cherokee to Ashville, Tatonka was a central location. Between our initial disappointment and the fact that Ghost Town has closed (we didn't know this before going), our vacation looked dismal. Thank you for salvaging our vacation. Since the four of us enjoyed Tatonka so much, and Tatonka can comfortably house many more than four, we're already thinking of gathering a group to return.

A most memorable family vacation...

We can definately say that this was our most memorable family vacation. Once we got up the steep drive and enterred the lodge, we were greeted by the sun shining through the windows in the family room. We enjoyed the fireplace and the wrap-around balcony overlooking the mountains. The jacuzzi was wonderful and the 2 master bedrooms were very comfortable. We really loved being able to see the mountains from the window over our bed every morning. Our son could not be torn from the game room and we ended every day with a family foosball tournament. We took advantage of everything the lodge had to offer, including hiking to the playground, the castle house, and the goats. The bison greeted us every morning as we drove down the driveway. The lodge was clean and the kitchen well-stocked with all the utensils needed to make dinner. We would definately consider staying here again.

Hello, We stayed here in Feb. of 2010 and loved it. The cabin was very spacious, which was great since we had six small kids with us :) The kitchen was great for cooking large family styled meals, and the decks were wonderful to sit out on. We spent our nights either sitting out on the decks, or watching the Olympics with a fire in the fireplace. We had plenty of firewood provided to us so we never ran out. I would highly recommend this cabin, especially for family reunions.

What a great trip and what a memorable place Tatonka Lodge will be for all of us! We liked having two master suites. All of the bedrooms were large and well laid out. The heated bathroom tile floor was a nice touch. The kids loved the covered wagon and bunk bed. The kids and adults enjoyed the gameroom with all of the many activities to choose from. The hot tub was a hit and really special at night with the lights around it. We kept a cozy fire going in the fireplace for ambience. We all enjoyed hiking down the long driveway every day to see the bison, rabbits, horses, and pet the goats. The walk back to the top was good exercise. The playground was well used. The kids had fun trying the wide variety of things they could play on. We had such a wonderful time, everyone wished we could stay a little longer. The children kept wanting to know when we can come back. Thank you for sharing such a neat place for a family vacation.

We took my family and three other families up to celebrate my sons 14th birthday. We had so much fun. I expected the lodge to be nice judging from the pictures, but you have to see the place for yourself. It is beautiful and we all felt spoiled. Everything was as nice as it gets and we enjoyed the bison and fresh eggs. We hope we can find a vacant spot to visit the lodge again. This trip was a memory we won't forget.

We visited Tatonka Lodge for a long weekend in December with two other families. We all took our kids to ride the Polar Express (on the Smoky Mtn. Railroad) which was about 40 minutes away. The rest of the weekend, we didn't even want to leave the home. It was beautifully decorated for Christmas...when we entered the lodge for the first time, my breath was taken away. The hosts greeted us upon arrival and were available for anything we needed. We had an excellent short vacation and would highly recommend Tatonka Lodge for others to visit as well!!

Hi Cheryl! We really had a wonderful time at Tatonka! We just can't get over how beautiful everything was. I keep telling everyone about the furniture, stairs, railings, floors, decor................I could go on and on! we will forever compare vacation homes to Tatonka There was plenty of room for everyone and even the walk up was not horrible. My son in law, who doesn't like mountain driving was even making it up to the top, the last few days. Mr. Ferguson, from the Trout Pond and General Store took them up to the top of his mountain and also the logging area so he got to some really steep places. We're all playing the lottery in hopes of moving up there. Everyone was so nice and we saw so many things we would never get to see here. We didn't get to eat the Buffalo Burgers until we got home...........We bought too much food the first day and had to throw so much out. We did try them once we got back and my husband loved them, I was not as enthusiastic as he but I ate it. It was kind of strong tasting for me, but I'm not really a meat lover. He cooked another with some spices added but he said he enjoyed the natural one better. My grandsons loved everything and can't wait to come back...seeing all the animals and being able to touch the goats and horses really impressed them. And of course they loved the playground and walking the hills with walking sticks.
