Stay at the Penthouse in Historic Custer

Year Purchased: 1995

Why the Owner Chose Custer

I grew up in the Rocky Moutains West of Boulder, Colorado. Jobs and life brought me to the Black Hills of South Dakota and they remind me of a much younger Colorado, this is why I have stayed and made this area home.

The Unique Benefits at this Country House / Chateau

The Penthouse in Custer is a unique historic building which besides being comfortable and beautiful is central to all the Black Hills attractions. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, The Mammoth Site, 1880 Train, Reptile Gardens, Bear Country. It is an easy drive to Deadwood, Sturgis, the Badlands, or Devils Tower.

Owner's Map of Custer

Toni Devereux: I'm from the Mountains of Colorado west of Boulder: Sugarloaf Mountain, which is between Boulder and Nederland. I am an extreme horse nut and animal lover. The Black Hills are similar to the Rockies, which I'm sure is why I love them so much. I originally bought the building in Custer, which I now lovingly refer to as the Penthouse with the intention of running a retail business from the main street storefront. I named the business Custer Gold and a few years into operation decided to remodel the upstairs, which had not been used for close to 50 years. I have always loved old buildings and had quite the adventure with the upstairs remodel. Everyone helped and we lived there for there years after its completion.

Wondeful Stay

Guest: Robin (Orange, California)
Date of Stay: 11/19/11 Review Submitted: 11/24/11

We just returned from a November stay at the Penthouse in Custer. It is even nicer than the pictures show, extremely clean and well maintained. There was plenty of room for my husband, myself and son. Our college-aged daughter was unable to come but would have had her own bedroom, too. The eat-in kitchen and bath were large and had everything we needed. The modern washer and dryer inside the apartment were much appreciated after a chilly day trekking through the snow. We loved old architectural details and appreciated the modern appliances. The heating, cable TV and WiFi kept us warm & occupied during the cold evenings. I will point out that the steep flight of stairs to the apartment might pose a challenge to a very elderly person or one with disabilities. Custer is central to many attractions. Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Monument, Rapid City and Deadwood, an hour or less away- even with winter driving conditions. We saw a great variety of wildlife in Custer State Park. We would have traveled more had we more time. The listing is extremely accurate and Toni was happy to answer any other questions. We highly recommend 'The Penthouse' to any one who needs a central, private and unique place to stay while exploring the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

Fabulous convenience!

Guest: Tom (Chicago suburbs)
Date of Stay: 08/14/11 Review Submitted: 08/21/11

We planned to spend three days in the Black Hills while taking our daughter to college. The Penthouse was incredibly perfect for a location to see everything in the Black Hills region. Everything you need is close by. The Country Market right across the street was great. After the first day, they know you. Anything you might need is in walking distance. The Penthouse was very comfortable. Rooms were nicely decorated and furnished. Everything worked well. We felt at home quickly. The washer dryer is a convenience we look for in rentals. I was a bit concerned that with the location right at the center of town it might be noisy but the Penthouse was very quiet and relaxing after long days. One thing to note is that the Penthouse is accessible by a longer than normal stairway. It was not a problem for us but people that have difficulty with stairs or very small children should know this. Thanks again for a great stay.

A perfect home away from home

Guest: Iowa and Colorado Residents (Iowa )
Date of Stay: 06/06/10 Review Submitted: 06/21/10

Greetings Toni, We have returned from our wonderful Black Hills vacation and wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed the Penthouse. What a wonderful, lovely space. And so clean and tidy, it was fabulous! We have decided we're now spoiled and may never be able to vacation in hotels again. The washer/dryer option was beyond great and having space to eat, lounge, and enjoy each other's company was perfect. The price was very reasonable and the town of Custer was charming and fun. We spent too much time and too much money in the gift store across the street! Thank you for everything, we are excited to return one day and when we do, we'll definitely call you first.

And so clean and tidy, it was fabulous! We have decided we're now spoiled and may never be able to vacation in hotels again. The apt. was so well stocked, we didn't need many of the supplies we brought. The washer/dryer option was beyond great and having space to eat, lounge, and enjoy each other's company was perfect. The Penthouse was the ideal place for us to stay in the Black Hills. It gave us the freedom to roam the area at will. Although we came early season we had a great time. No queues in the State Park... and parking was easy everywhere. The Penthouse is rooom and we soon made it a home from home. The people in Custer are very friendly and always willing to offer advice about where to eat etc. You can't go wrong by going here... we had 10 days of bliss... Thanks Toni

Nice Thanksgiving Getaway!

Guest: Livesimplecolorado (Aurora, Colorado)
Date of Stay: 11/27/08 Review Submitted: 12/03/08

We stayed at the penthouse during our thanksgiving break. It is a lovely older home that was spotless, beautifully decorated, spacious and completely updated. We really enjoyed our stay. We liked the fact that it was also pet friendly and we were able to bring our dog along. It was nice to be close to all the SD attractions. Toni was wonderful to work with and there were no hidden fees which was nice (something i have found in alot of VRBO listings). I thought we got a great deal. I would stay again and would recommend this destination to others. Thank you Toni!

Can't Wait to Stay Again.

Date of Stay: 08/03/08 Review Submitted: 08/12/08

This was a wonderful place to stay, right in the middle of a great town. Groceries, eating establishments and shopping all within walking distance. The apartment was beautifully restored and decorated, spotless, had everything we needed, and a great view of the town and Custer sign. The courtyard was a nice place to unwind with a table, chairs and grill. Custer is a convenient location close to Custer Park, Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore. Beautiful motorcycle riding area. Toni was very helpful. We will stay here again and recommend it highly to others.

Great place to stay

Date of Stay: 07/12/08 Review Submitted: 07/22/08

The apartment was lovely, spotless, very nicely decorated, and had all the necessities, plus several nice extras (shampoo and conditioner, laundry detergent, etc.). It was centrally located for all activities in the Black Hills and even our dog had a good time - nice and close to the Mickelson hiking trail. I would certainly recommend this property to anyone else. Just be aware of the 22 steps up to the living area!
