Spring Break & asked to leave in 1/2 hour

Our family from California went to Belize for spring break this April 2011. When we got to the yellowbird house the owner was there and saw that our children were old 14, 17 & 22 and was upset that they were not "children" that they would add "pressure" to the house. He would need to call his wife and get back to us. Next day he comes back, spoke to his wife and wanted another $100.00 for our adult son . Said house only is for 4 persons. However website say (sleeps 2-5) 2 queen beds and a twin. Web-site also says that there is beach view and ocean view. There is no view . New multi-story building to one side and brush and busy street to the beach side. no view He gave us 1/2 hour to leave right when we had sat down for dinner. So we were left to get a taxi and had him show us other hotels that might have availiblilty, Lucky we found a fabulous place on the beach with ocean/ beach view.They wont credit the time we were not there & asked to leave. We paid ahead through paypal. The owner is something else. Never seen such a thing. My husband and I are inn keepers/owner in California.

Owner response:Eileen is correct in a few things, first; there were 5 adults not 2 adults and 2 children like she said before booking. Yes we did offer to allow them to stay for an additional charge. but they refused. We in fact did ask them to leave or have only have 4 people stay. We ask ever guest about how many people will there as this is a small unit. To miss lead us intentionally by telling us that there will be 2 adult and 2 children and then showing up with 5 adults did not sit well with us. The Husband did say that they used to own a inn in the past and understood our delima but he did not make the reservation. I Mentioned they should know that being deceitful was not the correct way to reserve a house. As for the Taxi, i asked politely if i could assist in any way and Eileen said yes that would be nice. I called the taxi service we use and they said they would be there in 7 min as i turned to walk upstairs she flagged down another taxi. There for leaving the taxi that was called in a lurch. When i asked if they want a new place to stay them had mentioned they were going to a place up north that is a very nice Hostel style venue. If i had know from the beginning we would have politely told them that the house is too small and rented it to some one else. Some people want too much for too little, In Response to the views: you can see the ocean from the rooftop patio.

Four of us stayed at Yellowbird Dec. 20-28, 2010 (arrival/departure) and it was great. We went for the diving and the dive boat picked us up 1 block away so we didn't need to use the golf cart we rented. Highly recommend a golf cart as it allows for easy exploring. Location is on south side of San Pedro and a bit of a walk to the hub. Apartment was as described except that you really aren't by the beach or ocean, which is one long block away and there are trees and buildings blocking the view. If you can see them at all, it will be from the rooftop patio, which is a wonderful place to hang out. Also, the house is on the main north/south street and you get a fair amount of traffic. Wasn't too bad though as heavy traffic in San Pedro is quite a bit different from the US. Steve Lee was a font of information, picked us up at the airport, made our golf cart reservation and took us to the shop to pick it up, recommended a couple respected dive shops and let the one we picked know we would be diving with them. The apartment is on the second floor of a house and the permanent resident downstairs is quiet and we rarely saw her. Everything worked as expected. There is AC in the kitchen that's at one end of the room that includes the living room so it helped a lot. There's also AC (very noisy) in the queen bedroom. No fan or AC in the room with the queen/single bunk bed. Not all windows had screens and this was only a problem in late afternoon when the sand flies and mosquitoes are out. The cell phone was broken when we arrived and Steve had to get a new one. We ended up using our own cell as we couldn't figure out how to use the one Steve provided (and what does that say about us???). One word of caution is that the place is for sale so can't speak to how it will be under new ownership. All that being said, I say go for it as it's a great place to hang out and easy to get everywhere on the island.

Recommended for:Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

We stayed in the 1 bedroom downstairs accommodations of this rental house and truly enjoyed our stay. The fenced in yard was useful for locking up rental golf carts. There were numerous additional amenities not listed on this site, that were very helpful. The rooftop patio had a great view of the sunset, with the ocean in the distance. The internet cafe was next to the gas station at the opposite corner block. The golf cart rentals were also nearby (about a block away). The walk to the beach was about 3 minutes and a brisk walk to the heart of town will take about 15-minutes. The washer and dryer were also very useful, as well as the full kitchen. The owner is very easy going and accommodating. I highly recommend this rental. On a rating scale of 1-5 (5 best): Cleanliness 5 Amenities 5 Location 5 Surroundings 5 Price Value 5
