You may want to enjoy a peaceful, bucolic setting, yet also experience bustling French village life. At our place you can do both! Our house is a charming abode at the foot of a medieval Burgundy village, yet with its own large private garden including fruit trees – pear, quince and cherry – and a giant chestnut tree nestling a treehouse.
Our secluded patio is perfect for dining and drinks on a mild evening or coffee on a sunny morning. The tall, natural granite stone wall behind you ensures privacy. In front of you is the most stunning of views. Gaze up at the 14th century church and the ramparts and towers of the fortified château.
A stone staircase leads down to the large garden from the private stone terrace. On particularly warm and long summer nights, we like to dine in the yard on the picnic table under the chestnut tree. Here you feel like you're lost in the countryside, listening to the birds chirping and the babbling of the Armancon river, which runs alongside the garden.
But no problem if you want to take a village stroll after dinner! Just cross the tiny stone bridge beside the house, walk up the winding staircase through the ramparts and you're in the heart of the old town.
In Semur en Auxois you will find a cobblestone pedestrian street with shops, old homes, restaurants, cafés, bakeries and the church. It is one of Burgundy's prettiest and liveliest little villages.
If you'd like to do some driving, the whole area is bursting with other charming stone villages and monasteries. And of course the countryside – rolling hills with grazing horses, cows and sheep – is sublime.
And we haven't even mentioned the vineyards! You are about 40 minutes from La Route des Grands Crus, featuring some of the world's finest wines.
There are also bicycles in the cellar or you can take walks through the woods and fields. Le Lac de Pont, a beautiful lake, is 3km away if you want to go for a swim.
It is the perfect vacation place to get away from it all. There is simply nothing like this in America!

Year Purchased: 2004
We are a group of three Americans (brother-sister) and a third partner who love France and wanted to have a pied a terre in the hexagon, as the French call their country. We rent our cottage to help recup some costs, but it is not a profit-making venture. We enjoy going there ourselves. Two of the partners live in the US (Washington, DC and New York City), and the third in Paris, where she closely supervises rentals and is there to help visitors.
Why the Owner Chose Semur-en-Auxois
The lovely town of Semur en Auxois is a treasure, and our cottage was just the perfect place to nestle down and enjoy life in this village. We were lucky to find it. Many people were interested in this house, but we snapped it up quickly! The cherry on the cake is our wonderful gardens and outside patio. We have privacy, a stunning view and a place to lay in the grass in the summertime!

You can either sink into real French life, or visit amazing, historical sites like a tourist. And of course we love the stunning food and wine!

The cottage easily slept 5, and was within walking distances of all amenities in town, from small market to larger grocery store, restaurant, gourmet shop, butcher, etc. We easily accessed the TGV to Paris for a day trip, and enjoyed exploring outlying areas within an hour by car. We perused the village continuously...which was very fun, and interesting, and made for a completely un-touristy experience. We felt at home in the cottage and were grateful to experience Semur-en-Auxois. We toured many recommended sites beyond the village, and rafted on the Cure river, hiked a bit in some wooded preserve area, too. Many, many activities to pursue. We'll be back!
Recommended for:Adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

This house exceeded expectations. Lots of sleeping space for our family of 5 - children aged 14, 12 and 8 - 2 bathrooms, well stocked kitchen for eating in, beautiful views from the patio and every window, large yard for the kids to play in, and great location for walking around town. We would love to come back for a longer stay!
Recommended for:Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
