Bocas del Toro house description
Welcome to Panama!
Our goal at Bluff Beach Retreat is to exceed your expectations and ensure that you have a wonderful holiday. We are one of Panama's highest rated Bed & Breakfast resorts on TripAdvisor - located on Bluff Beach -Isla Colon, the largest island of the Bocas Del Toro Archipelago on the Caribbean side of Panama. Imagine less than two hours after leaving Panama City you are sitting in the hot sun, on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - sipping a Mojito! Only 5 miles, or 20 minutes from the islands’ airport- we offer the perfect getaway to those looking for a more private vacation. Airlines offer many flights a day to the island and we will be there to pick you up.
Imagine getting up in the morning to the sounds of the ocean, parrots nesting nearby and seeing monkeys enjoying their breakfast. The smell of fresh-roasted locally grown organic coffee brewed in a French press wakes you. Breakfast consists of freshly squeezed orange juice or a Smoothie made from one of the papayas growing outside your window - eggs, lots of fresh fruit and fresh-baked breads!
The 4 acre property is located directly on Bluff Beach, with miles of secluded sandy beach. It is one of the few places in the world where giant Leather-Back Turtles nest! You can walk forever without seeing another person. Our property has many different varieties of trees – from limes, oranges, papaya, mangoes and bananas to beautiful palms. Wonderfully fragrant shrubs and flowers surround our homes. We have constructed three homes, the Palmas Casita, a lovely two bedroom - capable of sleeping four, and a gorgeous, 4,500 square feet Beach House with four bedrooms and five bathrooms – capable of accommodating nine, and our new Pina Casita, a luxury one-bedroom home - capable of sleeping two. You may rent one or more bedrooms depending on your needs. Our heavy-duty solar energy power allows us to run all the amenities that you might expect. The homes have been beautifully built with rich native woods, high efficiency Hunter fans, fully screened louvered windows, hotel quality mattresses, lots of hot water, fully equipped kitchens and so much space to relax and enjoy life. Attention to detail makes these homes a cut above the rest!
Our new 65 foot lap pool & terrazza is a wonderful addition to the property.
There’s a lot to do. Enjoy walking miles of deep sandy beach, snorkeling, surfing, fishing, kayaking or use one of our bicycles. In addition, we offer horse-back riding, surfing lessons and guided jungle hikes through our 165 acre farm which is located nearby. We can also arrange excellent boat tours with one of our boat captains to the Bastimentos National Park, or a visit to a local Chocolate farm. How busy you want to be is up to you! If you just want to hide out and relax, the house offers wireless hi-speed satellite internet, a large library of books and DVD’s and almost any game under the sun, in addition to a fully-stocked bar. It does occasionally rain at Bluff - but you can enjoy the rain from our 1,200 square foot porch!
When you arrive at the airport, we will be there to greet you - take you grocery shopping should you prefer to cook some of your own meals, and then we are off to Bluff! The accommodation comes with a cell-phone capable of international calls (all out-going calls are your responsibility – incoming are free!). We have four full-time staff – maid service is offered 7 days per week – laundry is offered at a modest charge. There are many excellent restaurants in Bocas town and two outstanding ones a short 5 minutes (on foot) from the property. Included in your room is a great breakfast – served on the front porch of the Beach House.
Rates range from $125-$225 per day for Las Palmas Casita - rates range from $175-$295 per day for La Pina Casita - rates range from $350-$795 per day for the Beach House - minimum 3 day stays (Low-High Season). Weekly rates are available. We offer groups a fully catered holiday as an option with your own private cook and helper. This is a totally stress-free way to enjoy the homes.
Email us your request and we will promptly get back to you. A 50% deposit is required – with the balance due 60 days prior to arrival. We accept Visa, M/C, or bank drafts.
Included in your stay:
- Transportation to Bluff Beach upon arrival
- Complimentary bicycles, boogie boards, masks & snorkels and jungle boots - use of a cell-phone

We drove from Boquete and it was a beautiful drive, fantastic views, and only 3 hours. Boat taxi to Bocas town was easy and enjoyable; and taxi to Bluff Beach resort was an adventure. The property is stunning, lush landscape, gorgeous pool, and beautiful home with wrap-around 2nd floor terrace with a view overlooking the pool, gardens, and ocean. We didn't want to leave. Steve and Karen, managers, were so helpful with taxis and recommendations. Great restaurants just a short walk on the beach. They provided the most delicious breakfast each morning with homemade fruit shake drinks, granola cereals, pancakes, fresh fruit, and the best coffee in Panama! We will be back. Next trip we will probably never leave the resort.

“Love, love, love Bluff Beach”
We stayed at Bluff Beach Retreat in Aug. 2013. We rented the main house with our two sons. Our initial cab drive to the house the first night was in the dark and we were wondering where we would end up. It's a good 20 minute drive from the airport and eventually the paved road turns into a dirt/sand road. Love that! You really feel like you are off the grid at this point. The retreat is a beautiful house built into the jungle but yet practically on the beach & the sound of the surf at night is wonderful. The house & property are extremely comfortable & clean...we were concerned initially about the heat and bugs but didn't experience either. We used our ceiling fan at night but still used a light blanket & got a few sand flea bites on the beach but didn't experience any mosquitos which was a great surprise. The property consists of the main house and a couple of other little cabanas which were occupied while we were there which meant we had company at our house for breakfast daily which was fun. The pool on the property is super convenient, especially when the ocean waves are super strong. Isla de Colon is a great island to visit because the airport is located there so it's very convenient. When we were researching which island to stay on I was wondering if we would be disappointed that we didn't branch out to another island but once there we never felt like we needed to be on any other islands. We did visit a couple of the other ones for various reasons (tours or restaurants) and although they were really great in their own way, we were very happy to be staying where we were. The location of Bluff Beach is perfect...you are a 20 minutes taxi ride (40 minute bike ride) from the main town but it's a beautiful scenic 20 minute ocean view drive) but you're also literally a 5 minute walk from two beach bars/restaurants down the road that are so fun and comfortable...we had quite a few meals there playing chess and watching the waves. People come from town on bikes or ATV's (Pirate ATV Rental is the BEST) to eat and relax there because (IMO) it is definitely the coolest part of the island. The owner of Bluff Beach is great (Ron).....there is a ton of stuff to do in Bocas...We were only in that part of Panama for 5 nights but wished for more. We love to travel and our motto is to try a different location every year but I've found myself dreaming about going back to Bocas as soon as I can! (see TripAdvisor for the complete review).

“You won't want to leave.”
Bluff Beach Retreat is second to none in Bocas. I have stayed at Bluff Beach in the past and it always exceeds my expectations. You won't want to leave. This is a beautiful resort literally 20 yards away from the most stunning beach on the island. On most days, you will have the beach entirely to yourself, without a soul in sight. Amazing. The resort itself is beautiful and well appointed with everything you could possible need during your stay. If you don't want to head to Bocas town for lunch or dinner, here are a few very good restaurants within a five minute walk from the property. While staying at Bluff Beach retreat I saw monkeys, sloths and many different types of birds. With the crashing waves in the background, I slept more peacefully that I have in quite some time. I love this place.

“Your own private retreat in Paradise!”
If I could give 6 stars I would. Martin and Nicole cooked incredible food and helped us with anything we needed. Please visit their restaurant a short walk away while you are in Bocas as they are both amazing cooks. We could not have asked for more. It was about 15 of us in our group and we were all able to find neat things to do around the area. The property is well designed and very comfortable for families or couples. The pool is great for those of you who want to stay in shape or keep cool. When I go back to Bocas I will make sure to stay here again. The friendly service at this place was as good as it gets!

My boyfriend and I stayed here in June 2013. We wish we had stayed longer. Ron is super nice and accommodating. He had answers for just about everything we wanted to know. He is also great with internet expediency. The place is lovely and is very eco-friendly! Right on the beach, you hear the ocean as you are falling asleep. We used the pool, the internet, and got breakfast every morning. Thank you Ron for a lovely stay!

A memorable trip!
A memorable trip!
We chose the Bluff Beach Resort for a special, family vacation in celebration of my husband's and my 40th wedding anniversary. Our daughter, son, daughter-in-law and 18 month old grandson accompanied us. We absolutely loved our trip, and Bluff Beach. It was a fabulous get away, that left us filled with extraordinary memories. I had been looking for what, in the end, seemed like an impossibility... a house directly on the beach, but with a pool. Bluff Beach has it all. It is across a dirt road from a beautiful, deserted beach (where leatherback turtles were nesting while we were there!). And we took advantage of the gorgeous pool every evening... a great luxury! The property backs up to jungle, so monkeys greeted us every day in the trees surrounding... not to mention a million hummingbirds, parrots, lizards, etc. Accommodations were excellent, although power was occasionally an issue, as it's an "off the grid" resort. We stayed in the main building, and had free run of the very well equipped kitchen. The owner helped with all flight and driver connections, which made our arrival and departure so easy. He was away when we were there, but this was not a problem at all, as the caretakers (a couple from the US) could not have been more helpful with connections to people, charter boats (to the little islands, Dolphin Bay, etc... suggestions of places to cycle, restaurants, etc. A great bonus was that Laura (the wife) is an experienced, fabulous masseuse. We all took advantage, and it was great! On the way back, we had a layover in Panama City that allowed us just enough time to see the canal and go to the museum there. A must. Thanks for an amazing, memorable trip!!!! We'd love to return!!!!

Our family of 5 stayed in the Main house at Bluff Beach Retreat and loved every minute. The views of the beach were fantastic and the house is extremely comfortable. The beach is virtually deserted so you don't feel like you are fighting for space to sit out. The only downside to the Bluff Beach area is that the ocean at this spot is barely swimmable. If you are very comfortable in rough water, don't let it scare you away, but if your children are not, you will be traveling a long way for beach time. We had great fun battling the huge waves. We were able to truly relax while we were there - lounging in hammocks on the porch, swimming in the pool or just playing games late into the night then falling asleep to the sound of the waves. The owner was not there but had a very friendly and knowledgeable couple taking care of the property in his absence. Steve and Karen were able to arrange for some wonderful tours (river & cave tour, and private snorkeling). We enjoyed learning about the islands and the history associated with the culture. The only downside that I will mention is the long cab ride to town over the very bumpy dirt road. It was probably especially bad due to the rains that came daily while we were there. Otherwise, perfect!

“exactly what we wanted and had hoped for!”
From TripAdvisor....................."Bluff Beach Retreat turned out to be exactly what my husband and were looking for. We had a beautiful cabin, very nicely done and very private with a large front porch. We woke up every morning and saw white-faced monkeys in the big tree next to the porch eating their breakfast! The managers were very friendly and helpful, and we had a wonderful time in Bocas! For us, it was perfect to be set a few minutes from the town so we could easily go into town for dinner and such, but then were able to easily retreat back to our privacy. Right in front of the property is a beautiful beach which we had all to ourselves. Everything was very clean and hospitable, and we would definitely stay here again!"

“Perfect property for a family reunion”Guest comment entered by owner
“Perfect property for a family reunion”
From TripAdvisor........................."We had our first family reunion in Bocas and we rented the bluff retreat property for a big crazy family. Before the trip I was very concern with the idea of having two different families (that never met before) living together in a property… but for the surprise of everyone there, we all had the best time ever together. A big part of that success was that the property is amazing. Everything about the property was fantastic. The house is really beautiful, it is located away from town so you can experience the jungle lifestyle and the best beach in all Bocas is just steps in front of the house. It is a very long white sand beach perfect for a nice morning/ afternoon beach walk. When the waves are big is dangerous to swim because there is a big shore break, but we had many flat days that I was in the water with my kids. The swimming pool is big, supper clean and long. Some of us are surfers and we had some great surfing days at Punch Beach. We went with the bicycles and our surfboards to the surf spot (fun 10 minutes ride). The house has a big kitchen and we were cooking all the time our fresh fish that some of us were caching spare fishing. There are some cool places to fish close to the property. Just the energy of that property is so relaxing that at the end of my trip I just didn’t feel leaving the property anymore. My day were so good and so relaxing there, that there was no reason to get out of the area. Some of those relaxing days we did some yoga on the deck overlooking the jungle and the ocean. I already miss it! The hospitality of Ron and Cristina was very nice. They were having breakfast with us every morning. Liduvina is the cleaning lady and she was the one that prepared the breakfast and kept the house clean everyday. She is great! The only detail is that the deck is not very safe for kids. I have a small baby and we had to have an eye on her 24 hours a day. I mention that to Ron and maybe he will make some changes. Don’t miss going out on Fridays and Saturdays night, to dance at Barco Hundido in Bocas town. Really fun… and practice your Salsa moves before your trip!"

Amazing stay in beautiful jungle B and BGuest comment entered by owner
Amazing stay in beautiful jungle B and B
Our family just got back from a wonderful visit to Bluff Beach Retreat. We booked four rooms, so had the large house to ourselves. Well, mostly to ourselves, since the kitchen is shared with the staff who make coffee (ready at 7) and breakfast (ready at 8:30). Yum to both. The facility is wonderful. We had four bedrooms, each with a private bath. The house also has a living room with books, a dvd player and a dvd library, internet, and a fifth bathroom and shower. The kitchen was well equipped -- we cooked in twice. There is a large lap pool and a killer ocean view from the porch. I imagine the place would be relaxing, but we were too busy doing all there is to do in Bocas del Toro to spend much time there. When I booked the place for five nights, I thought we'd be a little bored. However, we didn't have nearly enough time to do all we would have liked to do, or eat at all the places we would have liked trying. Our hosts (Steve and Karen, in Ron's absence) were amazing at booking activities for us, and changing them at the last minute if the kids changed their minds. We did scuba dive, surf, take the Bat Cave tour, snorkel, see Dolphin Bay, horse back ride (Ron has horses), bike ride (same) and see all kinds of wildlife, including lots of sloths, bats, birds and monkeys. We also watched a beautiful and very dramatic thunderstorm from the front deck. Cassius, the boxer, was an unexpected pleasure. Ron was very helpful in making travel arrangements. Air Panama has to be one of the strangest airlines ever, and I wouldn't want to try to make arrangements with it myself. I wholeheartedly recommend this facility and will stay again in a minute when we return to Bocas.
