Les Artigaux is situated in 5 hectares of wooded park, just outside the village of Arrens in the beautiful Val d’Azun in the French Pyrenees. In a beautiful mountain setting, it is ideally place for activity holidays such as walking, cycling, mountain biking, skiing, cross-country skiing and paragliding. All the accommodation is self-catering and has been furnished and equipped to a high standard. Le Soulor and Le Couraduque apartments sleep up to four people and L’Aubisque sleeps up to 6 with an additional cabin room suitable for two children. Le Tourmalet is a spacious loft apartment with 3 bedrooms including a huge master bedroom with en-suite bathroom. La Grange, a converted 18th Century barn, has three bedrooms and sleeps up to 7. A Scandinavian hot tub and a sauna have recently been installed for guests to relax in. The owners and their two children live on-site and are always happy to provide local knowledge or help you arrange your holiday activities.
Plenty to see: Arrens is about 12km from the pretty town of Argelès-Gazost, which is well known for its thermal baths and has an excellent weekly market. Lourdes, world famous for the shrine of St. Bernadette and attracting millions of pilgrims a year, is 25 km away. The historic and elegant town of Pau is within an hour’s drive. Otherwise, we are in the heart of some of the most spectacular scenery France has to offer, from famous Pyrenean sites – such as the observatory perched on the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, the cascades at the Pont d'Espagne or the World Heritage site of Gavarnie – to picturesque lakes and mountain villages with their age-old traditions.
Plenty to do: The area is a paradise for walkers and cyclists of all levels. Activities available locally in the summer season include horse riding, rafting, paragliding and fishing, and in the winter both downhill and cross-country skiing, snow shoe walking and husky sledge rides. The unspoilt natural environment offers the opportunity to observe a variety of mountain flora and fauna (including eagles, vultures and isards).
Annual events: The area hosts a number of annual festivals and events – the most famous being the Tour de France which, in 2008 will have a stage finish at Hautacam above Argelès. Also in 2008 this stage will be featured as the Etape du Tour when 9000 amateur cyclists ride the route the week before the main event. On a smaller scale, there are many traditional fêtes which offer great opportunities to absorb the local culture and traditions. In January a Nordic weekend is held at the Col de Couraduque enabling anyone to try out the various activities such as cross-country skiing and snow shoe walking. In September Arrens hosts the Cutlet Festival which celebrates the return of the flocks of sheep from the high mountain pastures. In October Aucun has a horse festival with displays featuring working horses of a variety of breeds. 2008 will also see special celebrations in Lourdes to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the apparition to St.Bernadette.

This has been the most fabulous holiday in the most beautiful location – possibly in the world. Your hospitality has been fantastic – from the provisioning of the morning croissants and fantastic jam, to very comfortable accommodation of a very high standard, you have, in your own quiet way, contributed to our relaxing stay in the Pyrénées, which is sure for a mention amongst family and friends, both in the UK and South Africa.Did you find this review helpful? We have had a wonderful week while staying at Les Artigaux. The Pyrénées is a new area of France for us and we were bowled over by the location of the house and the scenery in the surrounding area. More important though was the welcome and the hospitality you showed us during our time here. We felt very much at home and wanted for nothing. In addition the girls loved it very much – Tango, the chickens, the hot tub, the swings etc. etc. So much so, they’re already begging us to come back next year!Did you find this review helpful? After a long drive from Calais, it was great to arrive at Les Artigaux. You have been such wonderful hosts providing advice daily. The bread and eggs were great. The hot tub and sauna have been fantastic after skiing at Hautacam and Cauterets. The snow has been wonderful and the scenery awesome. The boys have really enjoyed their stay and their first attempts at snowboarding. We would love to come back in the summer and try cross-country skiing next winter. You have made our stay extra special.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Here we are again – we said we’d be back! It was lovely to spend a little longer here this time, doing more walking and plenty of relaxing. In no way were we disappointed the second time around. The weather has been fantastic, the company excellent and the wildlife spectacular – flowers, butterflies, vultures and your buzzard!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This holiday property is ideally situated for those who want peace and tranquility, with stunning views and salubrious mountain air. It is located at about 1000m, just above the pretty village of Arrens. We used it as a base for cycling with our 6 year-old daughter - sometimes cycling directly from the property, other times driving down into the valley to start a ride up another mountain, or in to Lourdes. Lourdes is easily accessible by car, or by bicycle along a the flat valley floor on a footpath used by walkers and roller-bladers alike. The property itself has everything you would want, including a dishwasher; the washing machine is shared but only a few feet outside the property. Our apartment had bunk beds in a small room off the bedroom - ideal for young children. The owners, Suzanne and Simon, are two of the nicest people imaginable - perfect hosts, friendly and welcoming, always available to offer advice, provide information, have a chat, etc. The chickens provide a steady supply of fresh eggs (as long as Suzanne can find where they've been laid!), and the recent addition of a hot tub is ideal for relaxing those muscles after a day's exercise. This year was our second visit, and I have no doubt we will return in the future. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a mountain base.Recommended for: Families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.
