If you are looking for a relaxing vacation with family and/or friends and one where you can bring your dog(s), we highly recommend Wildflower Farms in Poultney, Vermont. The house is lovely, the grounds are vast and beautiful, and the little town of Poultney was really quite charming. It was a joy for us to be able to spend a week at this home and bring our two dogs. We hiked just about every day on the property, except the one day it rained. The dogs were so happy that they did not want to go home... : )Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, age 55+.
Owner response: Our dogs never want to go home either!!

My husband and I stayed at Wildflower Farms with our two kids and our dog for 4th of July Week. It is great to be able to find a place to bring the dog. The surroundings were beautiful. It was a treat to find horses in the field when we went for a walk the first day! The kids and the dog loved having the freedom to roam. The house was a great size. When we first arrived we noticed the AC was not in so we called the owners and they had someone at the house 20 minutes later to install them. The only criticism we have is it seemed like it had been a while since anyone was in the house. The floors and furniture were dusty and the house smelled closed up. I washed all the dished and cooking utensils before we used anything. The bathrooms could have been cleaner. So overall we had a good trip, I just wish they had a cleaning company go through before we arrived.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: I am sorry that the house was not as clean as you would have liked. We did and always do have our cleaning team clean the house between tenants. They may have hada busy schedule that week and did not do there usual thorough job. I will mention your review to them and hope they do a better job in the future.

Do you need a pause in the noise and bustle of your world? Well, if you do, Wildflower Farms is the place for you! Recently,my family and I were the fortunate recepients of the peace and serenity that is just one of the qualities of this wonderful home. We had some business in the area, so we rented this comfortable home. It made all the difference. While the setting, itself, is just lovely, the owners have not forgotten all the "creature comforts" that also make for a relaxing getaway. While we were there, it was quite warm but the ACs kept the home nice and cool. There is also a small den on the first floor with a sofa bed and an attached bath ( with shower) that would be perfect for an individual who might have trouble with the stairs to the second floor. Everything is very clean and in working order. Due to the intense heat, we could not explore as much of the surrounding countryside as we would have liked to -However, each evening the fireflies put on quite a show! ( One can only imagine the pleasure in an invigorating hike around the property on a crisp, Autumn day!) The house is located on a hill so you have a lovely view. (In the snow you would need a vehicle that could handle the hill.) I would like to thank the owners for their prompt response to my inquiry and for allowing our rental plans to go so smoothly. It was a pleasure to work with them. I would love to return to Wildflower Farms!Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Wildflower Farms is our families retreat, its truly place to rest, relax and enjoy nature. Located on a country road in rural Poultney Vermont, we enjoying sharing our home with others who are looking for a quiet country location where they can relax, hike or just rest. Our home welcomes well behaved dogs and their owners.

We had a wonderful stay at Wildflower Farms during August 2009. The house is stunning, comfortable, and set amidst gorgeous surroundings. Poultney proved an ideal location for us, since from there all but the very north east of the state is easily accessible -- and unlike many small towns in Vermont, it has excellent amenities (a proper supermarket, a library with free Wi-Fi, two good restaurants, and a terrific diner for breakfast). It was a truly memorable vacation and we cannot recommend Wildflower Farms highly enough.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We spent our 10-year anniversary trip at Wildflower Farm and brought our 2 Pointers. This was by far the most perfect set-up for dog owners. We always travel with them, but your house was ideal with the indoor HUGE crate which both dogs could fit in, and your outside kennel behind the garage was absolutely secure and perfect for our dogs. We felt comfortable going out all day on our motorcycle and leaving the dogs in the outdoor kennel. Your master bedroom suite is also a perfect set-up. Very spacious. In addition, your kitchen had all the appliances and gadgets we needed. Also just a quick 5-minute ride to downtown Poultney, and there's a fabulous restaurant -- RedBrick Cucina on Depot Street. Leave room for dessert. FANTASTIC food and service. Wildflower Farm is also conveniently located to tons of sites and shopping like Manchester, VT - great shops. Check out the local breweries throughout Vermont too. Next time we come up, we will come in October for foliage. We were a bit early this time, but enjoyed the weather and scenery anyway.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: The peak foliage season in Vermont changes yearly due to weather conditions. We find that anytime from Oct 1 - Oct 21 is a fantastic time to enjoy our fabulous colors but anytime time spent in Vermont is time well spent. Our highways and byways have virtually no traffic and around every corner is another beautiful site.

Superb! My wife and I are from the UK (although I'm a native of Baltimore), and we spent two weeks at Wildflower farms during the first half of August 2009. The house is gorgeous, spaceous, and very well maintained (we think the photos on the web site do not do it justice). The surroundings are simply outstanding. The owners could not have been more friendly and helpful. In fact this was as close to a perfect vacation as we could have imagined. There were just the two of us (no pets, no kids), but had one or two of our grown children been able to join us there would have been plenty of room. Travellers from Europe will appreciate the washing machine and dryer. This year, perhaps because of the economic crisis, we found a huge number of fine properties in Vermont from which to choose. Not having been in Vermont for 40 years, we were unsure where would be the best location. I don't remember now why we chose Poultney (the house was certainly a big factor), but it turned out to be ideal. With the exception of the far North East corner of the state, almost everything was accessible from there. We saw a baseball game in Burlington, went shopping in Manchester, picked blueberries in nearby New York, toured the gaps through the Green Mountains: everything was within easy reach. We visited friends in Montreal, and this, too, was an effortless drive. Poultney is a lovely town. It is small and charming, has a nice feel to it, but also has plenty of amenities. There is a large grocery store, a gourmet restaurant (which we didn't try), a very good bar/restaurant which serves fine food at very reasonable prices, a library with free Wi-Fi, and reasonably cheap gasoline. Breakfast at Tot's Diner is a must. For anyone thinking of visiting Wildflower Farms from the UK or elsewhere in Europe, it is really simple. We flew to Boston, spent the night at a hotel near the airport, and the next day picked up a rental car and took a leisurely drive up to Poultney, arriving in day light. Going back we followed the same steps in reverse. For visitors from the UK, we strongly advise renting a car through a major UK travel web site. The cost was around one-third (yes, one-third) of what it would have cost via similar sites in the USA, including all the insurance. There is no excess on the insurance, either. If you fly via Boston you can fly home on a day flight, so there's no jet lag when you get back to London.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: We happily accept paypal or credit cards from our overseas guests.

I have been looking for the perfect house to rent in Vermont for many years. When you travel with your dog finding a nice house is a challenge. Wildflower Farms is a dream come true for dog lovers. A great house that is very comfortable. The grounds are wonderful, and taking the dog to the fields is an experience I will not forget. If you are looking for a peaceful place to spend some time in Vermont this is the house for you.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, pet owners.
Owner response: We love dogs and have enjoyed hiking with our dogs for years on our property in Vermont. It’s been wonderful being able to share the house with other dog loves. Having an inside and outside kennel to contain the dogs when they are wet and/or muddy keeps the house tidy. Have wood and tile floors plus a wonderful cleaning team keeps the house neat and clean for all our guests. All our canine guests seem to love the freedom of running wild through our woods and fields.

We had a great time, the house is very comfortable and contains everything you need. The fields were fabulous for our goldens, lots of room to hike and run for them, gorgeous views for us! It was very safe for the dogs, as you're far from any road traffic (very important to us). The house is very privately situated, it was so quiet and peaceful. We were graced with stunning star displays at night and enjoyed listening to the owls. The town of Poultney is lovely; again, pretty much everything you need basically is there (grocery, liquor, etc), but Rutland is less than half hour if you're looking for something special. We look forward to returning in the future!Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: We are so happy that you had a great week. Wildflower Farms is truly a special place and we are happy to share it with guests who are as thoughtful and considerate of our property as your family and pets were!

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1985
About the owner: Our family of 4 loves the outdoors, hunting, fishing, snowboarding or hiking. We purchased the 100 acres in Poultney in 1980 and the house was added to the land in 1985. We fenced in 15 acres in 1990 to accommodate our horses. The horses are gone now but we sometimes lend the field to friends and you may see horses there from time to time. Our two children and friends grew up sledding, hiking, camping, swimming in Lake St Catherine and the nearby Poultney River. The VAST trails cross our property and neighbors lent us their snow mobiles to explore all the wonderful trails our area has to offer. Once the children got older snowboarding became their main interest and we purchase a condo nearer to the mountains but wanted to keep our house in Poultney. By renting the house a few weeks a year, we can pay the taxes and some expenses and have the house and land to enjoy a few times a year.
Why the Owner Chose Poultney:
Our property is ideal for anyone who loves to hike (spring, summer, and fall), fish in Lake St. Catherine and golf at the Lake St Catherine Golf Club or just get away from it all. We loved it for the open land and as a place our dogs could run free hiking with us. The lake is not crowded and it was a great place to teach the children to water ski and wake board
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Poultney is not a tourist area, the town with Green Mountain College as its center is a true Vermont small town. We have locally owned diners, hardware store, and pub and country store. The streets have little traffic; you can always find a place to park downtown. If you need some excitement, take a drive to Manchester Vermont, about 45 minutes from the house. There you will find many restaurants, outlet store, Lincoln’s family home, upscale shops and plenty of activities including craft fairs, horse shows, auctions and local theater
