The decor was updated and cute and the owners were very easy to work with. However, there were ants everywhere...even inside the microwave. The grass was knee high and that was a problem since we took our dog with us. The shower was very small and had a terrible leak that ran through the floor and on to the carport below. The phone did not work and there was no internet service. However, the weather was perfect, the beaches nice, sunsets were amzaing and the food was delicious (Tacky Jacks and Sassy Bass). We cannot recommend this property until some major improvements are completed.

Owner response: The home is sprayed for insects on a monthly basis by a professional exterminator. Ants were found in the microwave due to some crumbs left by a previous guest. Food crumbs were removed and the exterminator was called for the house to be exterminated again. The phone and Internet service was down due to a problem by the local phone company all over the island. Upon completion of the phone company's problem, phone service and Internet was restored. Maintenance was called about the shower leak to the carport area and a pipe had become disconnected. The problem was promptly corrected. We try to keep our home clean, updated, and furnished with up to date furnishings. I am sorry for any in convience, however with rental homes that stay rented every day, problems do arise. We address and correct our problems when reported immediately.
Our first visit to Volunteer Landing was in 2008. We planned to stay at their other property "Five O'clock Somewhere" , but a hurricane changed our plans. Les and Doris offered us "Volunteer Landing" to stay in while repairs were made to the other house. We spent part of our vcation at both locations. It was great! In 2009, we again stayed with at "Five O'clock Somewhere", but found that our hearts were really at the "little house". Our 2010 vacation was spent exclusively at Volunteer Landing. We never left the house, except to walk to the beach. We took all our food and cooked on the grill that's under the house while relaxing in the porch swing. Most off our time was spent on the front porch which has a view of both the gulf and the bay. It is such a relaxing location. In the spring of this year we went back to Volunteer Landing with another couple and are currently making plans to go back soon. It is our favorite vacation destination. We have been there in September, October, November, March and April and it was perfect everytime. There are some things around the house that seem to need repair, but it's just right for us. Doris and Les both are great to do business with. We are definately looking forward to our next visit Volunteer Landing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Owner response: Thank you for being a valued repeat guest at our home! We agree that Volunteer Landing is a great small home so close to the beach! We try to keep our home neat and clean for our guest. It is sometimes hard to keep up with the repairs as they are often not reported and we are not aware of them. The Good News is that Volunteer Landing is getting a "makeover"! A new floor, flat screen tv's, leather sectional sleeper sofa, and new bedding! I am sure you will love the new decor! Thank you again for sharing our home!
Rick and I had a fantastic week at Volunteer Landing. The house was perfect for the two of us. We loved all the little extras such as the beach equipment, the swing underneath the porch, the close proximity to the beach and gulf. We only used the one bedroom with the king size bed and slept like a baby, very comfy! Doris was wonderful to work with via email and we felt at home there. Thanks so much. Tammy

Several of my family members stayed in this house while I personally stayed in Doris and Les's other house "Five O'Clock Somewhere" they had nothing but praise for this house. They loved the location to the beach and the views. Also, everything you needed for the beach was right there. We would stay there again!

This house is all about location! Located at the end of the road and the beginning of the bay in a small, quiet development, the house sits on a double white sand lot. It is exactly as described. 12 of us stayed here ranging in age from 6 to 55. The young’uns could be turned loose to play in the sand and the Gulf beach is a very short walk away. There was also a ‘beach’ area (without a bulkhead) where we were able to launch our canoe and kayak. Part of the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge with many ‘bayous’ is just over a mile away via St. Andrew’s Bay. Like some other commenters, I had my reservations about fishing from the pier. There was no need for that. From about 11 PM until 3-4 AM, specks congregated every night we were there under the pier lights smacking at the bait fish. They could be a bit finicky but, with the right lure and patience, there was always enough for a good feed for our group. I was surprised by how many larger fish (18 + inches) there were although the smaller schoolies hit lures more readily. All members in our party had a great time and we are already planning our return trip.

My husband and I stayed at Volunteer Landing and had a lovely time. It's a neat little house. I especially appreciated all the beach equipment, so we didn't have to lug beach chairs and umbrellas from home. Doris is great to work with -- very accommodating, and ready to make your vacation perfect.

We stayed for the weekend of August 8-10th. We had a fantastic time and loved the house. It was very clean and just the right amount of space for our family of four. We felt like we had a home away from home. I hope that we can come and stay again soon. And my little fur babies loved it too!!!

We stayed at Volunteer Landing the week of June 23rd. Without a doubt, it was the best vacation we have ever had. The house was very cozy and equipped with everything we needed to make our stay feel like home. The beach was beautiful and only a short walk away. My husband and I really enjoyed the swing underneath the house. I have a 14 year old and a 3 year old and they both had a blast. The owners were wonderful to deal with. They even helped us plan all of our activities, so when we arrived we were already familiar with our surroundings. Volunteer Landing is a place you fall in love with. Thanks again Doris and Les!
