"Thank you for putting the damage deposit in the mail. Travelers’ Rest is such a wonderful spot for a vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We only wish that we had booked it for a longer stay. I could spend a year there just reading the wonderful books in the house. Thank you for your help. We hope to return someday."

Why the Owner Chose Banner Elk

Banner Elk feels a bit like being in a small European village. The summers are cool, the fall is spectacular, the winters are exciting with the LOTS of snow and skiing. Thanksgiving week is a great time for hiking with family and friends and then going to one of the many local Christmas Tree Farms to cut a Christmas Tree.
We enjoy eating breakfast at the Banner Elk Cafe and Lodge on Saturday mornings. They have great coffee and omletes and muffins and friendly service. After breakfast it's nice to walk through the Banner Elk Park, follow the trout stream and watch the kids on the many playground areas or the dogs in their fenced playground area. We also enjoy walking through the Lees Mcrey college campus and the surronding areas where you can feed the ducks in the lake.
Each year we pick blueberries at the Banner Elk Winery and Blueberry Farm. The winery is a fun place to visit. The owner will give you a tour of the winery and you can sample the wines. Blueberry wine is their specialty.
We really enjoy the outdoor art fairs in the summer and the Wooly Worm Festival in October. When we're here on Sundays we try to get over to the Mast General Store in Valley Crucis to hear some bluegrass/mountain music played by local musicians.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Observing the wildlife: birds, wild turkeys, fish (in the pond), and even bear in the fall and spring.

Just "Wow"!

Date of Stay: 01/07/11 Review Submitted: 01/13/11

We spent a secluded week during the incredible snows after New Years. We felt like we were alone in our own world. Even when outdoor temps were in the 0-15 degree range, the house was warm and comfortable, and always felt nice in shorts and t-shirts. 5 of us stayed, and there was room for plenty more. We watched *lots* of birds through the abundant windows, and made friends with the local dogs who visited daily to make sure we were ok. Our kids had plans to go snow tubing, but found all the sled and tube activity they needed was available right on the property. They spent hours sledding and building snowmen. There was not a single item we needed while there that wasn't available in the house. There were the expected amenities, and then there were lots of surprises everywhere we looked. Plenty of movies, plenty of indoor and outdoor activities, and plenty of quiet seclusion. This would be a deal at twice the price... We even had the opportunity to meet the owners, and a more gracious couple I've never happened upon. Truly nice, accommodating, and they bent over backwards to help us. A heartfelt "Thank You" from our family. Stay here, and you'll not be disappointed! We're planning our next visit already...

Great location, close to Banner Elk downtown district. Very nice home with "peaceful" surroundings. Kitchen was supplied with everything you need to prepare a meal. We were able to enjoy the beautiful fall colors. Enjoyed the Banner Elk Winery ,Banner Elk Cafe, Moses Cone area on the Blue Ridge Parkway with a 5 mile roundtrip hike to Flat Top! Driving the backroad to other areas in the vicinity. We still have things to see and places to go in the area. We are planning another trip in early spring 2011. Thanks for letting us use your home!!
