Enjoy FALL in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the spectacular colors of the trees, and the smell of apples (from the apple trees) from the covered front porch of Traveler's Rest. There is also hiking, walking, fishing, biking, fires at night (inside and outside), watching the wild turkeys walking on the property, and great bird watching without having to drive anywhere. Lots of family fun!

Traveler's Rest Mountain Cabin is an open, airy retreat for those who love nature, the mountains, and casual living. Built as a quality primary residence, not a rental property, this square-cut cedar cabin has antique furniture, an extensive library, a gourmet kitchen with new stainless steel appliances, satellite TV, high-speed wireless internet throughout the house, and free long distance calling within the US.

Stay warm with the stone masonry fireplace with wood burning stove insert in the living area or have a marshmallow roast at the fire pit, located next to the cabin with wonderful mountain views of Beach Mountain in all seasons. There is also a large, covered, front porch set above the spring-fed trout pond, with oversized rockers, bird feeders, and an outdoor dining table for a breakfast spent watching the hummingbirds feed, or for enjoying a candlelit dinner amid the sounds of the spring-water and clear skies of the mountains.

Traveler's Rest is located on the secluded, north slope of Sugar Mountain. A ten minute walk down the hollow will take you to the local craft, fruit and veggie stand. Downtown Banner Elk with it's wonderful array of quality eateries, coffee shops, public parks, Lee's-McRae College, and shopping is two miles from Traveler's Rest. The cabin is actually located on the back side of Sugar Mountain so it's a five minute drive to some of the best skiing on the East Coast. Mountain trails cross the property and lead to three springs within a five minute walk. Deep forests of rhododendron, beech, and hemlock trees surround the mountain meadow in which Traveler's Rests sits amidst split rail fences.
There are too many things in the area for a full listing but a few listed by distance or drive time: Grandfather Mountain, 8 miles; Blue Ridge Parkway, 15 minutes; winery, 8 minutes; Linnville, 15 minutes; Boone, 20 minutes;Moses Cone Craft Center and Julian Price Lake,20 minutes; area ski slopes 5-15 minutes, multiple trout streams,10-20 minutes, horseback riding, 10 minutes.
Please remember to tell us how you enjoy your stay, and your favorite memories, in our Guest Journal. We'd love to stay in touch.

**** From a Recent Guest ****

"Thank you for putting the damage deposit in the mail. Travelers’ Rest is such a wonderful spot for a vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We only wish that we had booked it for a longer stay. I could spend a year there just reading the wonderful books in the house. Thank you for your help. We hope to return someday."

Owner's Profile

Why the Owner Chose Banner Elk

Banner Elk feels a bit like being in a small European village. The summers are cool, the fall is spectacular, the winters are exciting with the LOTS of snow and skiing. Thanksgiving week is a great time for hiking with family and friends and then going to one of the many local Christmas Tree Farms to cut a Christmas Tree.
We enjoy eating breakfast at the Banner Elk Cafe and Lodge on Saturday mornings. They have great coffee and omletes and muffins and friendly service. After breakfast it's nice to walk through the Banner Elk Park, follow the trout stream and watch the kids on the many playground areas or the dogs in their fenced playground area. We also enjoy walking through the Lees Mcrey college campus and the surronding areas where you can feed the ducks in the lake.
Each year we pick blueberries at the Banner Elk Winery and Blueberry Farm. The winery is a fun place to visit. The owner will give you a tour of the winery and you can sample the wines. Blueberry wine is their specialty.
We really enjoy the outdoor art fairs in the summer and the Wooly Worm Festival in October. When we're here on Sundays we try to get over to the Mast General Store in Valley Crucis to hear some bluegrass/mountain music played by local musicians.

The Unique Benefits of this Cedar Log Cabin

Observing the wildlife: birds, wild turkeys, fish (in the pond), and even bear in the fall and spring.
