If you have been dreaming of staying at a picturesque wilderness log cabin with end of the road privacy and spectacular mountain scenery, this is the place. Located on Hastings Mesa at an elevation of 9000 feet, San Juan Cabin was built in 1999 out of hand-crafted Scandinavian full scribe Engleman spruce logs. The cabin sits on 78 acres on the side of a ridge overlooking Willow creek and meadow . There are groves of aspen and oak to picnic in. Also stands of large Ponderosa pine trees. It is just outside of Telluride with views so large and spectacular that you can see many of the most famous peaks including; Mt. Sneffels, Mears Peak, North Pole, the San Miguel range and the extinct volcano, Lone Cone.
San Juan Cabin is remote yet easily accessible to Telluride (30min.) Ridgway (20min.) and Montrose (1 hour) The trip to Telluride can be by highway or the scenic old stage coach path known as Last Dollar Road. The location puts you in the heart of the wilderness yet an easy drive to town or the regional airport in Montrose.
Much of the original True Grit movie was filmed in this area. If you have seen the movie you will recognize our view to the South as the opening scene.
The cabin has 3000 square feet of finished living space. It has a full kitchen as well as a partial kitchen on the lower level. The lower level can be separate independent living quarters for a second family.
It also is environmentally "green" with a very small carbon footprint running on solar and wind power. Heating comes from passive solar and a stone fireplace, the fireplace has catalytic combustion for low emissions. The water supply for the cabin comes from a well on the ridge above it. It is pumped by solar power into a 1,200 gallon cistern, then with gravity pressure it comes into the cabin. When the cistern is full the excess water goes into an overflow pipe and comes out in a fountain near the front door. This waters the ground around the area.
The wildlife is abundant here. Deer and Elk are everyday sites along with Coyote, Turkey, Grouse, and Eagle. Sometimes Bobcat, Porcupine and Bear are seen. Wildflowers abound in May, June and July with fields of lupine and arrowroot by the thousand. The Autumn colors are awesome, with red oaks and aspens of purple and gold.
You can hike and bike right out the front door on trails and dirt roads around the cabin. There is also great biking on the abandoned railroad grades. Mountain bikes are provided. You can hike on the National Forest trails with access from many of the neighboring roads. Hot springs beckon at both Ouray and Ridgway. Stargazing is magnificent from the telescope on the deck with stars so bright it will give you the sense of wonder and awe back that you knew as a child.
THE CABIN IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR RENTALS FROM MAY 1st to NOVEMBER 15th.

Thank you for the use of your cabin, we had a wonderful time and hope to return again and again! The location was perfect for us, secluded but close to Telluride and Ridgway. The views are incredible and numerous deer visited us daily. The cabin is very comfortable with plenty of space for everyone.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My family loved this property! The views were stunning, the house was lovely. We enjoyed living a "green" lifestyle for the week off the grid. We'll be back next year because we only brushed the surface of all the activities in the area.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My family so enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home. Our three young children loved hiking and exploring and seeing all the wildlife. It is very private, cozy and relaxing. The house was clean, extremely comfortable and quiet. While it had the adventurous feel of being separated from civilization, it also had the convenience of getting to town easily for activities, groceries, etc. The scenery is truly breathtaking, spectacular views. My family can't wait to return!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Its more than a cabin, three floors give everyone a little privacy, clean, comfortable and quiet. The are has all kinds of activities from white water rafting to Gliders, hiking, shopping and more. We enjoyed our stay at this vacation rental. It was not difficult at all to live on solar and wind power; in fact, it was entertaining to watch the amps coming in on their gauge, as well as the amps going out. The beds were comfortable, the views incredible. We saw elk, deer, a fox and beaver, lots of chipmunks, and a number of cows grazing across the valley. We could see the jagged peaks of the San Juans. We are planning to go back again. The market in the nearby town has a very good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. The first night we stepped out on the deck and saw, really saw, the Milky Way as unexpected bonus. We had seen it before, of course, but I'm not sure we had ever seen it so clearly. The home was clean and well maintained, and very beautiful. The photos really don't do it justice.Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1999
About the owner: We are a family of five that love the outdoors. We live in Illinois, but grew up in the mountains.
Why the Owner Chose Placerville:
These are some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes that we have ever seen. We like to be in nature away from the crowded city.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Animals frequently come right up to the house whether you are inside or out. Sometimes I feel like I am a guest at their place, we are just visiting them in their environment. We live off the grid here. The power comes from the wind and the sun. You feel so much more in tune with the world around you here.
