This historically magnificent home, built in 1869, sits ready for your family gatherings, wedding parties, retreats, and ghost seeking experiences. Nearly 3,000 sq. ft., it is four bedrooms, four and a half baths. Three of the bedrooms have private baths, and two have claw footed bath tubs.
For much less then the cost of three hotel rooms, you can enjoy this home with it’s four fireplaces, two kitchens, formal dining room, breakfast nook, two kitchens, library, pond with waterfall, rose gardens, and a private Jacuzzi nestled in a cozy Gazebo.
Enjoy views all the way to Heavenly Valley and the High Sierra’s from the south facing windows. Hear the waterfall cascade through three levels into the Koi pond through the Master Bedroom window and hear the historic V&T train whistle blow through the canyon. You can even take a moonlight ride on of the V&T’s many special event catered rides.
This property was built by the Swiss couple Simon and Mary Ogg. Living way beyond their means, they built a European style villa, with large rooms and even closets. Closets were very rare in those days as they were taxed as additional rooms. Simon Ogg lost the home twice, once to the infamous banker William Sharon of the United Bank of California, and again for unpaid mercantile bills. Their daughter, Birdie, was sadly raped in this home when she was seven years old, and newspaper clippings from that time outline the entire trial and sequence of events.
Also outlined are the adventures of those times, the mining, photos of the oxen drawn carts making their way through busy bustling Gold Hill with renderings of this home when it was new. All of its owners are chronicled in a historic binder, with photos, together with death certificates, birth certificates, stock certificates and graduation programs from the Fourth Ward School. Check out the shy ghosts of this grand home, and see if they are willing to reveal themselves and whisper their past to you.
The front parlor features a 12’ silver backed mirror original to the house. Look at yourself and wonder how many throughout history have been framed by the very same bronze and marble piece. Lush wallpaper adorns the rooms, with spectacular curtains akin to those seen in the movie Gone with the Wind. A long and grand stairway welcomes you from the impressive foyer to the three bedrooms upstairs, though a bedroom with a full bath is also available downstairs. There is even a two car garage if you bring your special vehicle for one of the many special events and parades.
Called the Lynch House because of its 150 year period of time being in the Lynch Family, kin to the late and well respected Nevada Assemblyman Tom Lynch, this restored home gives you an opportunity to truly experience the grandeur of the Comstock. It is on the Nevada Historical Register. It is located just three homes down from the Gold Hill Hotel. The hotel offers fine dining, an excellent Sunday champagne brunch, historical lectures and original plays even mid-week.
Less then a mile to Virginia City, one can easily go and enjoy the boardwalks, stores and haberdasheries, restaurants, plays at historic Piper’s Opera House, or a drink at any one of the world famous old bars. Enjoy the Comstock Cowboys at the Bucket of Blood Saloon on most Sundays. See any one of the countless parades offered by a community that is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most parade filled town in the world! This community gathers to any worth while cause with heart and spirit. Visit and worship in Virginia City’s historic churches if here on a Sunday!
This retreat is situated 20 minutes from Carson City by means of Hwy. 50, 15 minutes from historic downtown Dayton, and 30 minutes from Reno and 40 minutes from Reno Tahoe International Airport. For skiers, it’s 45 minutes to the slopes of Mt. Rose or the Nevada side of Heavenly Valley. It is the perfect place to enjoy Nevada Victoriana and still be able to see all the sites, visit all the landmarks.
To make your stay even more enjoyable, your grocery list may be sent ahead and filled at cost plus 15%, so your favorite snacks and drinks may await your arrival. Roll away beds are available for little ones if you need more space. So come, experience the Comstock at its royal best, and enjoy what currently is the only vacation rental in the area. It offers the best combination of privacy, independence and opportunity to entertain and socialize in grandeur.
Bring your friends and family, enjoy cooking in the grand kitchen or BBQ by the pond, sip Mint Juleps on the long covered front porch, and reflect through the stained glass on how little things have changed over the years with respect to the feeling in this home.
