Want to sip your drink of choice, read your favorite book, ride a bike, walk to the beach, go antiquing-fishing-sailing-golfing or just quietly watch a beautiful sunset while putting your toes in the sand? How about a family reunion or group gathering (rent house next door also - see below).
The house was built in 1913 when historic Cape Charles was a booming railroad town. It has recently been reconstructed to include the modern comforts of today while keeping the irreplaceable character and charm of the past. The downtown avenue (a 5-minute stroll) has a number of refurbished, old buildings that offer restaurants, a hardware store, drugstore, coffee shop, gift shop and reminisces of the past. There is an Arnold Palmer Golf Course as well as a Jack Nicklaus Golf Course within a 10-minute drive. A new marina with gift shop, restaurant and bar is only a few minutes away. Great seafood can be purchased for an at-home meal or dine out at one of the unique restaurants close by. The wide, white sand beach (cleaned and graded daily) is perfect for children and sea glass collecting. Eco touring opportunities such as kayaking, bird-watching, State Park exploring, etc. abound on the Eastern Shore. The Chesapeake Bay is known for its fishing whether in your own boat or with a fishing guide/party.
The house has four bedrooms (two w/queen, one w/two fulls, and one w/2 singles also rollaway and playpen), one and a half baths and a private outside shower. Blow dryers, dishwasher, microwave, DVD player, DirectTV (in two bedrooms and living room), gas grill and washer/dryer are provided. A playpen, old time stroller, baby gates, high chair and arm for bed are available. Bed, kitchen and bath linens are provided but not beach towels. It has a screened-in gazebo with picnic table and a porch swing. In the rear of the house is a fish-cleaning station as well as space to park a small boat (24’ for less) accessed by an alley (or park your car). The backyard is fenced in. For a family reunion or group vacation - check out the vacation home next door - VRBO #224381. Rent them both for your large gathering!!!
A Food Lion, liquor store, fitness center, fast food places and movie rental store are all within a 10-minute drive. Other interest items could be antique and specialty shops, fresh seafood, museums and researching the small Eastern Shore towns north of Cape Charles. However, large shopping malls are located just south in Virginia Beach (45 minutes away), with Williamsburg, Jamestown, Busch Gardens and Water Country U.S.A. only an hour and a half away. North of Cape Charles are Chincoteague, Assateague Island, Tangier Island and other historic and inviting little towns. Any of these destinations make great day trips.
Some comments from the Spring/Summer/Fall of 2009:
-Absolutely one of the best weeks in our long life together! Such a cozy, comfortable, colorful, charming house. One whole day we did not venture out at all, other days we walked “uptown” for delightful lunches with the locals, and marvelous sunset walks to the water’s edge. Great nourishment for body and soul…
-Wow!! My husband and I have been blessed to be able to stay in your lovely vacation home. Cape Charles is quite a unique vacation spot and we enjoyed each day. Hope to return!
-What a great home! You have thought of everything. Our family had a great spring break. We met many friendly folks, enjoyed the beach, took advantage of the playground and too a beautiful boat ride out of Oyster, VA to Cobb Island. We hope to be back.
-We are back again…another great vacation…on several occasions there were clear sky’s and the sunset was every bit as beautiful as Key West. Just incredible! My kids loved the playground at the park and as usual the beach. We made a few more friends this vacation. Ate lots of great food (that Asian Shrimp appetizer at Aqua is to die for. We love this place.
-We came all the way from the Netherlands to live in your lovely home for a long weekend. We sat relaxed on the porch, in the gazebo, and at the beach! A place to come back to.
-This was our second time here and we had a great time. Weather was great, kids played on beach every single day. Our son said the last day “Mommy I don’t want this to be our last day!”
-We had an awesome time. House felt like home, beach great and thank you so much!
-Rockin’ chairs on the front porch are as good as it gets. Sunsets beautiful. Food fantastic. Can’t wait to come back.
-We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in your great house! The big things – kitchen remodel, fish cleaning station, central A/C, outdoor shower, gazebo as well as nice lighting, handy hooks everywhere were much appreciated. Everyone in town was so friendly – yummy pizza at Venetos. Beautiful vacation spot.
-We felt like we were visiting family. The house has so much. You have added such nice touches. We will definitely come back.
-Three generations of family from three different towns, and we all were comfortable and entertained. Thanks for all the neat instructions – what a help. Great house. Most relaxing vacation we have an in quite sometime. We are already thinking of our return.
-We have never stayed in a rental so well-equipped! You have not missed a detail and we appreciate all your hard work. We will definitely be back for another great vacation.

Our family enjoyed our time in this house very much, it was so close to the beach and to the shops and restaurants on Mason Ave, the shower in the backyward and the gazebo are very good to have, the kitchen and bathrooms are very well maintained and stocked, the information book was very helpful, the rooms big and cozy and we just felt so at home and loved staying here. Thank you Kim for making this vacation so great for us!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Just returned from a long weekend vacation. Two families - four adults, four kids - all happy and exited. The house exceeded our expectations - it's very cozy, clean and well equipped. Photos really don't do the justice - in reality house looks better. Combination of old world and contemporary styles make it whimsical and interesting. The kitchen is big and very well planned, enough counter space for two people to cook together... Gazebo was the favorite part for kids and we didn't have to worry about insects bites or running on the street. Also owners are very easy to deal with. Overall experience was very positive and we would be glad to come back once again. THANK YOU!Recommended for: Families with young children.

About the owner: My husband and I have had our primary residence in Charlottesville, VA. A great city near the Blue Ridge mountains. But we found ourselves visiting the saltwater at any opportunity...our vacations were always at the beach. We vacationed in many coastal areas from Maryland to Florida. Then decided it was time for our own beach house. After visiting the Eastern Shore, we fell in love with Cape Charles. The rest is history....
Why the Owner Chose Cape Charles:
We bought this home for our own vacation spot and shared it with family and friends for years. What brought us to Cape Charles was the quaintness of the town, friendly people, great beach, beautiful sunsets, fishing and seafood. You will understand when you visit Cape Charles.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
You can enjoy a screened in gazebo with swing, picnic table, low lighting and ceiling fans. Sit on the front porch rocking chairs while sipping coffee. The tree-lined street is quiet and well maintained. The outside shower makes coming off the beach much more convenient while enjoying the sky above in your 'natural' state. A fenced-in backyard makes the parents' job a little easier. Having off-street parking in the back of the house is a plus for your car and a small boat. The garage is a bonus for bike or fishing equipment storage.
