Plumeria Cottage is a charming early-era-Puako beach bungalow--set amid mature palms, Milo tree, spectacular spreading Royal Poinciana and, of course, plumerias. Newly remodeled yet preserving many original details, you’ll enjoy a special vacation steeped in the continuity of this enduring community. Walk across the one-lane road for beach access or visit nearby Waialea Bay and Hapuna Beach for spectacular swimming, snorkeling, sunning or wintertime whale watching. Stop at the quaint Puako General Store for an ice-cream treat or cold drink, or visit nearby resorts for shopping, dining and Hawaiian-style events. This appealing one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage is ideal for a couple, perhaps with a young child. THERE IS ANOTHER HOME ON THE PROPERTY.
Plumeria Cottage offers a vacation of ease indoors and out. Compact yet perfectly proportioned in the vintage beach style, it is a delightful combination of convenience and charm. And, with a roomy, sunny lanai and large shaded grassy yard, it becomes quite spacious. An outdoor-shower room with laundry and plenty of room for beach items and for drying wet towels and bathing suits keeps the indoors comfortable and relaxed.
House Design
Enter beside large plumerias into the living space, hang your keys just next to the door, step down to the kitchen on your right to put your market purchases away, or to the dining area followed by the sitting room. The bedroom, also a step down, is just beyond the kitchen and off the main living area. A sliding shoji-screen “window” provides cross ventilation as well as privacy. Across the front of the cottage is a roomy deck and around the corner is the large outdoor shower room, so there’s no need to track sand and dripping water into your living space. Built-in shelves hold linens and both bath towels and beach towels.
Vertical bead-board paneling, clerestory windows for ventilation and horizontal sliding windows set the vintage tone. Lauhala mats and rattan floor coverings enhance the original pine floorboards plus new bamboo flooring in the kitchen and bedroom. Décor includes new microfiber sofa bed, reupholstered vintage rattan dining table and chairs. Local art echoes the simplicity and sweetness of the cottage.
The kitchen is updated with new cabinets, granite-tile counters, microwave and refrigerator yet maintains the original painted-brick wall, inset corner shelves, jalousie windows and vintage-look Hotpoint stove and oven. The new sink plus coffee maker and grinder, toaster, linens, dishes, flatware, cooking pots and utensils all meet modern expectations.
The bathroom with roomy shower stall (and jalousie windows for ventilation and privacy) has painted-wood detailing, old-style wooden medicine cabinet and additional sliding window for that added touch of light and greenery.
This home is managed on behalf of the owners, by Mary Fox, R(B) 2 Papayas, LLC. Mary holds an active real estate broker's license in the State of Hawaii.

We spent a relaxing 3 weeks in this little house. Is was very clean, furnished and decorated very tastefully. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and we were able to barbecue on the deck. Woke every morning to the cacophony of birds in the trees and sunshine. It is a short walk to the beach and we went down every morning to swim and every evening to watch the turtles.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

Husband and I loved our stay here. So much better than the hotel we stayed in for our first two nights on the island. Furnishings are tasteful and comfortable. Plenty of room for 2 people to spread out. Loved the private outdoor shower. Right across the lane from tide pools where the turtles come in for the evening (give them their space though). Close to two great beaches - one sunny and one shady.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

We absolutely loved our week on the "Big Island" and it was made even more enjoyable by the cozy Plumeria Cottage on Puako Drive. It was close to our favorite beach (69) and the neighborhood was super safe and quite. There were many more household items at the cottage then we expected, like coolers, ice packs, beach chairs, boggie board, and even some masks and fins! This helped us enjoy our time even more. We will be back! Thank you to all at 2 Papayas for all the good restaurant, and Luau recommendations!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

This lovely home was perfect for our quiet week on the Big Island. It was close enough to Kona to enjoy the restaurants and shopping when we chose, but far enough away for quiet. There were more beaches nearby than we were able to visit, and varied in amount of waves and sea turtles to watch. It was also convenient for trips to Hawi and Mauna Kea. The house is comfortable and well stocked with more than the average expected items. The towels were "home" towels not "hotel" ones. We stopped at Costco near the airport & were able to add all the little items from the general store down the street. Holly greeted us & showed us around the house & gave us good local tips. The wifi cable went bad after a couple of days and Mary bent over backwards to get us back online. Sending a repair person quickly and calling back to make sure everything was good afterwards. You are across the street from the ocean, so if you absolutely must see the water, choose another home, otherwise, go, enjoy, you won't regret it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

We had a great time in Puako at this cottage, just the two of us. It is perfect for a couple. Nicely appointed, small but workable kitchen, great birds right out in the yard off your deck, and nearby pathway to the shore. The only down sides were that you are immediately adjacent to the house in back, its occupants quite peaceful, but you do hear them (not as private as we would have preferred); and one parking space its best to back into to enable you to safely get back onto Puako Rd. Minor but there you have it. Some nice swimming/snorkeling equipment, a private outdoor shower, nice deck, couch and sitting area. Lovely!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

We loved staying in this cottage for a week. The neighborhood is great for walking, snorkling was fine (we saw lots of sea turtles) and the nearby hotel property is a nice place for a drink. The general store is about a 20-minute walk, and nearby Kawaihae has several great restaurants and an excellent fresh fish market and larger general store. There are plenty of sites up north, Hawi and the Pololu Valley, that are fun for hiking and shopping. Get major supplies in Waimea or Kailua Town before coming to Puako, and you can set yourself up for a very relaxing stay. I especially appreciate how fully equipped the cottage is. The bed is firm and very comfortable. The kitchen had EVERYTHING we needed, for example, a whisk, a blender, etc. in addition to the usual pots and pans. There was also some snorkling gear and a small boogie board. We loved the outdoor shower, and used it exclusively. No air conditioning, just the way we like it...the cross breezes and shade kept the place very comfortable.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We had a lovely time at the cottage. Everything was clean and well stocked. Loved the towels! Cottage was very cute and well maintained. It was a delight to come "home" to after a day at the beach. Coffee at the beach trail in the morning, turtle watching and sunsets, what else could you ask for. Great beaches nearby- the best was Mauna Kea. Go early to get a parking spot, but stay all day. The beach trail was fun, lots of coves to sample and mai tais at the end! Am wishing I was there right now! Aloha..Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We stayed at the Plumeria Cottage and it was just what we were looking for. It was clean and had everything that you need for your stay. They come to greet you when you arrive and give you a nice tour. There is an out side shower for taking off all the sand and salt water which was really great. It is very quite area and so peaceful. The awsome Hapuna beach is just down the road about 2 miles and that is a "Do not miss" beach. The beach is good for swimming and walking and relaxing. I would definately recommend this place to anyone. When renting some places, you never know about the bed, but this place has a top notch bed. It is not all sagged out. There are things to do and places to see that are not very far away. A Win Win situation!!!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

My wife and I spent the most fantastic two weeks in the Plumeria Cottage. Everything about the cottage, Puako and the beaches near by was just what we hoped for. Mary was a phone call away when we had a question. The kitchen was well equiped and met all of our needs. The barbeque on the lanai came in handy several times. A big bonus was the short walk every every evening for those gorgeous Hawaiian sunsets! We will be back soon!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.
