Plumeria Cottage is a charming early-era-Puako beach bungalow--set amid mature palms, Milo tree, spectacular spreading Royal Poinciana and, of course, plumerias. Newly remodeled yet preserving many original details, you’ll enjoy a special vacation steeped in the continuity of this enduring community. Walk across the one-lane road for beach access or visit nearby Waialea Bay and Hapuna Beach for spectacular swimming, snorkeling, sunning or wintertime whale watching. Stop at the quaint Puako General Store for an ice-cream treat or cold drink, or visit nearby resorts for shopping, dining and Hawaiian-style events. This appealing one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage is ideal for a couple, perhaps with a young child.
Plumeria Cottage offers a vacation of ease indoors and out. Compact yet perfectly proportioned in the vintage beach style, it is a delightful combination of convenience and charm. And, with a roomy, sunny lanai and large shaded grassy yard, it becomes quite spacious. An outdoor-shower room with laundry and plenty of room for beach items and for drying wet towels and bathing suits keeps the indoors comfortable and relaxed.
House Design
Enter beside large plumerias into the living space, hang your keys just next to the door, step down to the kitchen on your right to put your market purchases away, or to the dining area followed by the sitting room. The bedroom, also a step down, is just beyond the kitchen and off the main living area. A sliding shoji-screen “window” provides cross ventilation as well as privacy. Across the front of the cottage is a roomy deck and around the corner is the large outdoor shower room, so there’s no need to track sand and dripping water into your living space. Built-in shelves hold linens and both bath towels and beach towels.
Vertical bead-board paneling, clerestory windows for ventilation and horizontal sliding windows set the vintage tone. Lauhala mats and rattan floor coverings enhance the original pine floorboards plus new bamboo flooring in the kitchen and bedroom. Décor includes new microfiber sofa bed, reupholstered vintage rattan dining table and chairs. Local art echoes the simplicity and sweetness of the cottage.
The kitchen is updated with new cabinets, granite-tile counters, microwave and refrigerator yet maintains the original painted-brick wall, inset corner shelves, jalousie windows and vintage-look Hotpoint stove and oven. The new sink plus coffee maker and grinder, toaster, linens, dishes, flatware, cooking pots and utensils all meet modern expectations.
The bathroom with roomy shower stall (and jalousie windows for ventilation and privacy) has painted-wood detailing, old-style wooden medicine cabinet and additional sliding window for that added touch of light and greenery.

Plumeria Cottage certainly lived up to the descriptions and photos in the online listing. The house was comfortable, clean, well-maintained and had all the amenities we needed. The Two Papayas management was gracious, generous, welcoming and responsive to our needs and concerns. The location is very convenient, within walking distance to petroglyphs, tidepools, nearby hotel activities and restaurants. We felt at home in the friendly Puako community and are looking forward to returning as soon as we can. We would absolutely recommend this property to friends or family.

I was at this LOVELY, clean and well appointed house for a week in December. It really was nice and private despite another house close by. I loved the location, the safe hiking and the nice general store. I would go again by myself, the bedroom was tight for more than one person, my husband joined me for 3 days. There was unfortunately some construction going on across the road I hadn't been expecting. The construction folks worked 7 am-7 pm except Sunday. It was kinda loud. All in all, though I loved Puako and the house was great.

Great out-of-the-way place for the the three-of-us; warm cozy lighting at night; great snorkeling nearby. Comfortable place to relax after long day at the beach. We really enjoyed staying at the Plumeria Cottage and 2Papayas was great. Would do it again like that. We appreciated the added touches (good boogie-boards, extra beach gear; outdoor shower). Short walk to great dive/snorkel entry point and only just a bit longer walk to dinner/sushi etc at Orchid. Few minutes drive to Hapuna Beach or 69.

Our 5 nights in Plumeria Cottage were heavenly. Puako is one of our favorite places (in part because of its old Hawaii feel, in part because of the great diving), and to find such a homey, adorable and comfortable place to call our own let us live the fantasy that it actually WAS our little piece of paradise... at least for a few days! The cottage is vintage yet up to date, and really really cozy and cute. The cottage is adorned with tasteful (not tacky) island art. It has comfortable seating, a fabulous bed (with good lighting!), a great little kitchen with all the works, large shower and outdoor shower/laundry area for us beach-goers to avoid tracking in salt and sand. Turtles are across the way, as is great shore diving and snorkeling. The garden seating and deck were great for relaxing after a day of scuba/hiking/enjoying Hawaii's many charms. All the staff were very helpful in our dealings with them, and very professional yet welcoming. We'll be back as soon as we can!

It is evident that this cottage has been cared for and tended with love and attention to quality and detail. It is what the description promises, well appointed and stocked full of useful and beautiful things; also filled with light. The neighbors are all around and sometimes we wished for a little more privacy, but the neighborhood is quiet and friendly. Puako is a sleepy little town where you can swim with the turtles, bike to the store, snorkel across the street, or read and take endless naps. We had a great time and can't wait to return. We definitely recommend for anyone who wants a sure deal to rent through 2 Papayas: everyone there was super friendly, responsive, beyond professional, and impeccable. We were treated like special guests in the midst of what had to be a busy season! Thank you.

Plumeria Cottage has everything you could ask for if you are looking for a non resort-type experience with a sense of belonging to a community. We enjoyed easy access to the beach walks, the Wailiae Bay Beach, and the sunsets across the street. We will be back!.

Plumeria Cottage is all that the description says. The interior decor is lovely but not fussy; very comfortable. The kitchen is very nicely updated (though no dishwasher, due to lack of space I assume). The location at the quiet end of Puako Beach Drive is ideal, and close to great snorkeling at the end of the road. This charming cottage is ideal for a single or a couple.

This house was awesome! It was a hidden retreat on Puako Drive, one of the nicer cottages. It is all new inside and beautifully and appropriately decorated...the tropical cottage you would expect. It is at the end of Puako which is a great snorkeling spot and the house was fully equipped with snorkels, fins, beach chairs and towels. The Puako General Store was also very handy for convenience items...they have everything from DVD rentals to flip flops and beer and wine! We will definitely we visiting this house again in the future. 2Papayas were great to work with and very organized. The photos match exactly what the house looks like and 2papayas had very helpful info and inside info at the house on local attractions/activities. We had zero issues with the rental and are happy to recommend Plumeria Cottage!
Owner response:I love to hear that you had such a wonderful time and that the home and our services were appreciated!

We stayed at the Plumeria Cottage the first week of May. The house is a little piece of heaven. If you haven't stayed in the Puako area, it's a real treat. However you have to book through 2papayas. I was given a price via e-mails and predicated expense dicissions based on given information. Later when we got our damage deposit back. It was less than what I was told was refundable. Wait to get things in writing before commiting with these people. note: vrbo site gives correct info on refunds. 2papayas website gives false info on refunds and so do they.
Owner response:Aloha, this was an unfortunate case of miscommunication. The guest paid the usual $300 refundable damage deposit for this rental which was returned to him IN FULL in a timely manner. However, in a earlier email to him, I inadvertantly replied that we would soon be returning his "$500 " deposit so that is the amount he was expecting. When questioned, I promptly emailed him a copy of his signed contract along with a copy of his check, but he still felt certain I had somehow cheated him. We do have all our guests sign a contract upon booking the home and are happy to explain any charges. I am the owner of the company called "2 Papayas" and I advertise this home on vrbo as well on behalf of the homeowner. I have been in business for 4 years and a resident of the Big Island for 23 years.
