The Unique Benefits at this House
We love the small town experience of living in our little corner of Italy. The views are spectacular, the people are warm and friendly, the food is delicious. We especially enjoy cooking in our house - making pizzas, using the tuscan grill. It is a beautiful part of Italy. It feels far from the touristed areas, but close enough to drive into Lucca, Florence or Pisa. But often we just like staying in the Serchio River valley and relaxing.

Our house is owned by three siblings (2 pictured here), and because of this we call the house Casa Tre Leoni. We all live in San Francisco.

Our stay in your beautiful home in the clouds was stunning. The house was quaint and comfortable, very well equipped and all in all a perfect place ! We were amazed by the spectacular view, the charming village itself and the history which is lovingly being preserved in a small museum. It was indeed an honor and a dream come true to spend a few days there. It is not to be missed ! Barga is a great little town with lots to see and do..good food, good shops, great people and a place we would return to again. We highly recommend Sommocolonea and Barga !

We stayed in this ancient and lovely stone house for three days this summer - it's truly a place that makes you feel like you're stepping back in time a hundred years (but with indoor plumbing). The winding and steep drive up to the top of Sommocolonia makes you pay attention, but once you're there, you the incredible views down the valley to Barga and beyond take over (Barga is only 10 minutes away but it seems like a different world). Aside from the very comfortable beds (1 large double or queen, and two twin beds in another room), there is a great sitting room upstairs, a compact but very well equipped kitchen, and a stone patio where you will find the wood-fired pizza oven (which was one of the highlights for us!) The owners have provided a step-by-step instruction manual for making the perfect pizza, from lighting the fire to making the dough properly. We pulled it off OK the first night, but by the second night we felt like we knew what we were doing. During the daytime we spent time down in Barga, went for a hike up on the mountain ridges overlooking Sommocolonia, and generally kicked back before preparing the pizza... One other thing we enjoyed was learning about he pivotal battle that took place in and around this tiny village during WWII, which resulted in a medal of honor being awarded to a US soldier for heroism and bravery. It was fascinating to see where it took place. If you're looking for a place to stay in Tuscany where you aren't sharing the sidewalks with 10,000 other tourists, this is a great choice. It's also a nice respite from the heat of Florence in the summer due to the altitude. It is a unique and wonderful place to stay.

We had an absolutely splendid time in this beautiful abode in this lovely ancient stone village overlooking a verdant valley ringed by snowcapped alps. Walked down from the house into the walled town of Barga and up from the house into the forest. Short drive to challenging alps hikes, visits to fascinating caves and historic arched stone bridge and countless other sites. But we mostly loved hanging out, reading books and cooking pizza in the oven on our patio. Wonderful, relaxing vacation.
