Welcome to the BEACH on Costa del Sol!
Our condo apartment is located on a cliffside directly on the Mediterranean Sea along the beautiful sandy 1.5 mile long Penoncillo Beach. Our third floor unit is a spacious, modest condo where you can have fun in the sun, enjoy a leisure walk on the beach, watch a beautiful sunset and at the end of the day relax in the comfort of your own home.
Our four building complex has an enormous pool, tennis court, landscaped gardens with roses and green all year long. The Beach is at the foot of the complex driveway.
Our balcony is blessed with an unobstructed 140 degree view of the Mediterranean Sea.
We have one double bed and a double pull-out sofa bed.
There is free Wi-Fi on our beach for customers at El Ancla restaurant-bar or at a nearby public library.
Condo has: fully equipped retro style (complete with peg leg cabinets) kitchen with refrigerator, three point cooker with oven, microwave, electric orange juicer, electric kettle, electric coffee maker, electric toaster; clothes washer; pantry; broad and spacious balcony for dining at its 4-person table, sunning, horizon and beach watching; decorative Andalucian-style fireplace; linens and towels supplied; flat screen TV with multi-channel cable service; bath including large recessed tub and shower, bidet, garden and Med Sea view.
We have a quiet Andalucian location and named our place "El Refugio" for the solitude it comfortably provides.
Yet, just a few minutes away are the Costa del Sol tourist facilities and fast times we all enjoy during a beach holiday. We are 6 minutes from the Torrox exit of the Malaga-Nerja super highway, a 2 minute drive (20 minute walk) from the growing tourist restaurant and shop area of Torrox Costa, 40 minutes from the Malaga airport, 1.75 hours to the fabled Alhambra at Granada and year round snow skiing above it, 2 hours drive to Gibraltar, and 2.5 hours to Tarifa and Algeciras for the ferries to Morocco. We are within day trip range of Malaga (birthplace of Antonio Banderas and Pablo Picasso) with its great cathedral and Picasso Museum, the great cathedral at Seville, the Moorish mosquita-cathedral at Cordoba, and cliff hanging Ronda with Spain's oldest bull ring.
There are excellent hiking trails in the seaside hills directly behind the condo. Walk high enough and find the avocado and almond groves and be rewarded with terrific views of the Sea and to Nerja, Torrox and beyond. Some say Africa may be seen on extremely clear days. The Nerja Tourist office near the Balcon will, if you ask, give you for free a hiking trail map; the stamina-requiring trail up the Rio Chilar from Nerja to a pool with waterfall is particularly good.
Guests from Stockholm wrote the following about their stay at El Refugio, "In July we spent two wonderful weeks. Resting on the bed in the sleeping room, we could see the Mediterranean Sea very close and day and night we could hear the waves rolling on the beach. Fishing boats searching for shoal and shellfish could be seen during our breakfast and dinner on the balcony. The temperature in the apartment was comfortable although the temperature outside was 35 degrees Celsius, and it was pleasant to be able to take a swim in the big pool or go down to one of the beaches seen from the balcony. Penoncillo Beach showed to be a good start for traveling around in the region. The mosque in Cordoba is really worth a journey! So we are looking forward to another holiday in Andalusia."

Cliffside Apartment on Mediterranean with Stupendous Views
Why the Owner Chose Torrox-Costa
We discovered the property while walking along the beach during the vacation of our wedding year and bought it later on our son’s birthday. We've always loved our idea of a basic Spanish holiday place on the seafront, but with the reality of life (work) we just don't use it enough, and it's crazy to leave it empty. Our place comes ALIVE with people, and as they say: "places gotta be used"! Our hope is to share our home with people who understand and appreciate it. The biggest compliment we could have is to hear that you want to come back next year!
The Unique Benefits at this Condo
Torrox Costa is the perfect place – possessing the “best climate of Europe,” warm and dry in summer, extremely mild winters with oranges on the trees, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and life. There is so much to see and do here. The problem will be fitting everything in! You'll tour, meet new people, hike, shop, soak, roast and sigh. Eat from seaside restaurants, sleep like babies. Food tastes better here, and you'll find yourselves going to bed early because you're exhausted, and getting up early because there is so much you want to do! And our sunrises and sunsets are primero.

Here we are! We searched high and low for a photo and finally found one showing us engaged in a favorite activity: travel, this time by train. Shelley is an educator for special needs children, now teaching in a university setting. Bill, an attorney, fell in love with Spain during a working visit many years ago. To be able to sit on our balcony and view the beach and sea and listen to the sound of the birds and waves is a wonderfully relaxing experience we look forward to every morning that we are here. We are very happy to share our little piece of Heaven with you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Adios, Bill

Bill- Sorry we did not put in a review on our last visit- as VRBO members ourselves, we realize the importance of comments from guests. What can we say, except we had one of our friends stay at the property based on our referral, and they (of course) had a wonderful time. We both fell in love with the balcony view, and spent a great deal of time there! The property and grounds were well appointed, and the unit was more than adequate for the needs of the two of us. We loved the people we met there (Malcolm and crew at El Ancla, downstairs neighbor Mike, etc.) and are so looking forward to our return this spring. Thanks again, Dan and Joanne
Owner response:Shelley and I are delighted you enjoyed your stay at ouir place called "El Refugio." By October 2011, we completed work on the bathroom (the knew toilet seat remains up when guests want it that way!), freshly painted the entire laundry room (all black carbon stains from the endless water heater are gone), re-covered two living room chairs, and painted ceilings in the kitchen and bath (the small amount of peeling paint is gone). Also, for the bedroom, we installed a new double bed frame and much longer mattress set.

“We stayed almost 2 weeks at this apartment, we recommend! (See photographs, so is it also in the real.) We have especially enjoyments of the view on the garden, tennis court, pool only above all on sea. From the complex, you run so near to the beach with enough beach beds with reed sunshades at 2.50 Euros with restaurants for a snack and drink. Nerja lies 5 minutes of Torrox and is quite pleasant. Torrox has an amusing boulevard with many good restaurants. Consequently many oblige here!”

My husband and I stayed in this condo for the month of February 2011. We found the place to be a little treasure! The photos and description are as described. It is not fancy, but doesn't claim to be. The unit has everything you need and is clean. Even during February we were not inside much. When we dined at home we ate most meals on the balcony and took advantage of the amazing view. Groceries are an easy walk and you can't beat the bus service at the bottom of the drive. There are also plenty of neighbors to meet and they are always helpful. We would go back to this same little piece of paradise!
Owner response:Thanks. With its 140 degree Sea view of passing cruise ships, coastal freighters and local fishermen, we owners love our balcony where a good book, fresh coffee or hot tea---or even a clear and dry jerez (sherry)---seems to make time stand still.

Drab, dreary and depressing. We were very disappointed with this property. Peeling paint, exposed wires and holes in the ceiling. Decor? Think 1970s motorhome. Unlike every other property we have visited, this one did not provide dish soap or laundry detergent. We were forced to purchase these for a 4 night stay and leave them because they are not allowed on a plane. This was the one blip on an otherwise fantastic 3 week holiday in Spain and Portugal.
Owner response:We are serious about the traveler experience. Our housekeeper, who formerly owned and managed a condo cleaning business in the Washington, DC area, usually leaves at least a small quantity of dish soap and laundry powder for incoming guests. We so regret this apparently was not done in this case and we profusely apologize for any inconvenience to our guests. A wonderful Spanish electrician installed three new light fixtures in response to guest requests for brighter lighting in the kitchen and bath (please see photo of kitchen in our property listing). The ceiling plates that will cover the small holes for the old fixtures and some exposed (but harmless) ceiling wires are on order with installation expected in June or July 2011 when our painter will touch up the few spots in the bath room and small laundry room ceilings. We intentionally maintain a retro 70s kitchen décor (please see caption of the kitchen picture in this listing). As you see in an initial paragraph in this listing, we offer a “modest condo where you can have fun in the sun … and at the end of the day relax in the comfort of your own home.” We believe our condo and its furnishings are colorful, certainly far from drab as demonstrated by each of our listing’s pictures that show exactly what guests see on arrival. These furnishings compliment our extraordinary 140 degree view of the blue Mediterranean Sea. A state Supreme Court justice visitor from the United States said, “You have a million dollar view.” We also much regret the guest writing the review encountered very bad and dreary weather during most of the four day rental period around May 13, 2011. An American neighbor who lives in a villa 100 yards from our condo wrote on May 25, “That was a bad week around the 13-Friday of May-lighting struck, electricity still needs repairs ... ." Prior to arrival, we send all guests our Guest Information and Directions document which in the third paragraph says, “Please get in touch with owner for all problems via email or telephone.” Until we received our guest’s post departure review, we had heard nothing of any problems or issues during their stay with us. With guest notice, we could easily have delivered the soaps and explained about the scheduled ceiling work. We truly want all our guests to enjoy a wonderful experience at our place on Spain’s Costa del Sol.
