Historic House on the Bay

This lovely waterfront Perdido Beach home is the ideal location for a family reunion, group retreat, or just plain relaxation. Five generations have enjoyed this historic home. Built in 1930 by Charles Marks of Montgomery, it has just undergone extensive restoration following damage from Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina.
Perdido Bay is in the front yard. Dolphins, herons, pelicans, and fish live in the Bay, which is beautiful in every season. Gentle breezes and the music of the waves stir around the house, making it incomparably tranquil. The water is warm and brackish, perfect for swimmers of all ages and shallow enough for young children. The neighborhood is semirural and quiet.
The house sleeps 14 guests and features a gourmet kitchen. Most furnishings are brand new, and a few antique family items maintain its rustic appeal. The house has central heat and air, as well as a gas fireplace for the winter months.
There are four bedrooms – three of which face directly onto the bay – plus a couch with a pull-out queen-sized mattress. Heron is the Master Suite, with a king-sized bed and private bath. Pelican, best suited for children or young adults, sleeps up to 6 children or 4 adults.
The bunk bed has a double bed on bottom, a twin bed on top, and a trundle bed. The day bed also has a trundle bed. Palmetto, at the end of the porch, features a queen-sized bed. There is a large double vanity bathroom shared with Pelican. Cypress is the most private bedroom, secluded at the far end of the house. This bedroom has a double bed with a private bathroom. Two more optional twin beds hang like porch swings on the front porch.
The gourmet kitchen is every cook's dream. The large granite island is perfect for serving fresh crab and fish. There are two sinks, a gas range, ultra-quiet dishwasher, microwave, oven, and lots of counter space. The kitchen, dining room, and living room flow together to make one open great room. The dining room table, dating from 1930 and original to the house, seats 14 easily.
A spacious screened porch, with hammocks, swings and rocking chairs, surrounds the Great Room and bedrooms. The back porch is the site of a ping-pong table just waiting for family tournaments or games to be enjoyed by all ages.
There is a well-stocked laundry room complete with washer/dryer, bath towels, beach towels, linens, pillows, games, toys, and floats. A canoe is available for exploring the bay and adjoining creeks and bayous.
During your stay, enjoy access to 'The Point Swim Club.' This private swim beach includes a diving board, picnic table and a sand spit which makes a great staging area for water sports.
The Gulf of Mexico, with unspoiled, dazzling white beaches, is just a short drive away. The bustle of Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is also close, but not too close, and offers shopping, restaurants and sightseeing. Pontoon and speed boats are available there for rent and boats can be chartered for deep-sea fishing excursions. The Tanger Outlet Mall is just a short 20 minute drive away in Foley for anyone looking for bargains galore.

Everything was just as we saw it on the website and more. The house was well stocked with things that we have normally had to add to in other homes we've rented. And even though this house is not right in the middle of the action, it was still easy enough to get to a small grocery and larger one when we needed it. The property was definitely clean and well-maintained and the owner helpful in answering all our questions. We most definitely would recommend this property. Since we have been to the general area often, we know where all the attractions, etc. are located, and it is nice not to be in the middle of that traffic and if we want to go to those, we would just plan the day and make the time. It fit our needs perfectly and we hope to come back again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

I highly recommend this home. I love the wrap around screened porch with hanging beds and rocking chairs! The kitchen is fantastic. The bay is right outside the door. We loved the sea kayaks and canoe. Grocery store is a hike so come prepared - you don't want to miss time at the house running to the store. Owner is next door and very helpful.Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, families with young children.

The pictures on this page do not do justice to how beautiful the house is. It's huge, well-stocked and perfect for large or medium-sized parties. The sunrises and sunsets we saw from the back porch were amazing. I couldn't possibly recommend staying in this house enough.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

In the new world of beach condos, lazy rivers, crowded restaurants, and traffic, Mark's Ark and Perdido Beach remain much like the beach life I remember from the sixties. The house is immaculate and comfortably slept 10-12 every night. The layout provided privacy at night but plenty of shared space by day. Kitchen is a cook's dream. With linens (including beach towels) and beach toys provided, packing was lighter. Kayaks and canoes were a real bonus for all ages. Very few checkout requirements: start first load of linens, start dishwasher, take out garbage. No climbing in the car for the long ride home, already hot and exhausted from cleaning! So glad this family is willing to share this wonderful place.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, families with young children.

We stayed at Mark's Arc and enjoyed every moment. The house is beautiful and comfortable and has all the amenities you need. The view of the bay is wonderful, the wrap around porch is comfortable and relaxing. My family included three generations and we cooked wonderful meals, played board games and enjoyed sitting by the fireplace. It was joy. Thanks for letting us enjoy your beautiful home and we will definitely be coming back.Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children.

Wonderful piece of paradise found at "Marks Ark". Old world charm of what I remember as a child yet full of every possible modern convenience you could ask for. Great for all age's with plenty to do for all or, just bring great music and books and forget everything else. If you desire "laid back" with just about everything you could find on the beach (minus people and traffic)this is your place. Wonderful owner and neighbor!! Do yourself a favor and stay here, you'll thank yourself on the way home!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
