Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (20-25 minute drive from Halifax) View Map
Accommodations: Chalet, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)
Keywords: Oceanfront Chalet
While this secluded oceanfront chalet in West Pennant is just 25 minutes to the heart of Halifax, it feels like you're a million miles from any city. It's a very secluded old fishing village with lots of incredible outdoor experiences- canoeing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, etc.. The village has only a dozen homes, some of which are occupied only on a seasonal basis.
The newly constructed chalet is 1250 ft2 and has an open concept. It's hard to find a spot in the house without a magnificent view of the ocean- very few man made features in the view. The bow shaped house front is covered with south-facing windows. The downstairs has a small but full bathroom, a bedroom, a living room, dining room and full kitchen with granite counter tops, custom furniture, exotic hardwood floors, copper accents, wood stove and lots more.
The upstairs is completely open with a claw foot tub, double bed, open bathroom, and great empty loft/sun area that's ideal for yoga, napping, reading, drawing, etc..
If you're looking for privacy, peace of mind, and the ocean, this is the place for you. We've never had an unhappy visitor!

The view and privacy were fabulous but in order to enjoy it I had to get past my overall disappointment. The description of a newly constructed, well appointed chalet was considerably overstated. When we drove up to the Chalet it looked like a little cabin with an outhouse on a cluttered property. The musty smell, stained toilet, tub and furniture, beds on the floor, overused greasy skillets and utensils, stained washcloth provided and the need to use bottled water for everything but bathing made the visit only tolerable. We are on a 7 week tour of Northeast US and Canada. For the same price range we have had wonderful success using VRBO or homeaway.com This property was terribly mis-represented.
Owner response:The guest book is again full (save one) of positive and genuine comments from this summer, 2011. Please have a look. The property has been chosen for a couple of different tv show 'bits' and generally attracts a lot of positive attention. I've had many offers! It has some one-pitched, rustic wood sheds that are similar in shape (but not size or purpose!) to a traditional outhouse. Happy to send a few pictures if you like- I really like them. They're made of cedar, hemlock and spruce without stain or paint- just natural and not out-of-place in this part of the world. With one acre of land, surrounded by 20 undeveloped acres of land, I'm not sure I'd go with cluttered but it's all a matter of perception I supppose. I'll send pictures of the furniture if you like- homemade tables, tv commode, granite topped island, open concept shelving with copper accents in the kitchen, etc. with 2 year old dining chairs. I made most of the furniture of Douglas Fir and some local spruce and pine. The washcloths are new each summer. The upstairs bed sits on a boxspring and this on the floor. I could opt for a frame under that but prefer the look of a low profile bed. The old clawfoot tub is not perfectly white but it is perfectly clean. This area of Nova Scotia has a lot of granite and some iron stains go with the territory. I could use some nasty chemicals to bleach 'em out but choose not to. The chalet (1300ft2) allows people who know how to appreciate nature, peace and quiet and a very clean- professionally maintained and cleaned weekly- home to relax and enjoy. I'm disappointed one guest didn't enjoy herself, not sure the chalet had anything to do with it- happiness starts within. If there is a problem of any sort while you are at the chalet please call and we'll get it straightened out. sincerely, John

We had a fantastic time during our stay in West Pennant. The chalet is beautifully built and decorated with great style. It was a pleasure each morning to sit out on the deck enjoying our morning cup of tea and watching the loons(cormorants?) in the cove. The chalet is perfectly located for touring all the lovely areas nearby including Halifax.... We particularly enjoyed walking along the shore of Crystal (Crescent) Beach and listening to the sound of the surf.... Thanks so much for your hospitality.

A breathtaking place in a wonderful location so close to the Atlantic but still protected by the islands out in the bay. Hot sun or thick fog, every kind of weather gave a different view of nature around the bay. We've had an inspiring stay here, our souls are soothed and we're ready to face the city again!
