Accommodations:  Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)

Keywords:  Apartment

We offer a spacious self-catering accommodation perfect for couples in a 17th century historically important townhouse, "Maison-des-Chevaliers."

Location: Loudun, between Chinon/Saumur, Tours area, Centre-Loire Valley (a UNESCO World heritage Site), France, Europe (close to Chateaux & vineyards of the Loire).

Accommodation: Part of our townhouse; upstairs, a superb, tastefully-furnished and well-equipped self-catering apartment : the bedroom has a large high quality bed, firm and new with fine linens, sitting room with comfortable sofa and armchairs, bathroom has a large modern shower and the kitchen is very well-equipped. On request additional sleeping accommodation available in adjacent studio for two adults or single person. The National Board of Tourism has granted the apartment three stars *** in the category "Meublé de Tourisme". This is a guarantee of high quality. There is a Broadband Internet ADSL connection and WiFi in the apartment as well.

You will enjoy the peace of this quiet town situated out of the crowded main roads. This is why so many guests from around the world have come to stay with us and find it hard to leave. Though the "Maison-des-Chevaliers" is located in the very center of the old town, it is surprisingly tranquil, guests can relax in the large walled garden or enjoy their meals in the private patio garden. Yet almost everything is outside your door; cafés, shops, restaurants, banks, bakeries, pharmacie and a lively and colorful weekly farmer’s market.

Loudun is a pleasant town of 8,000 with ancient streets and five officially recognized historic monuments. Visited, but not overly-touristed, it is well situated for visiting the chateaux and vineyards of the region. Loudun is near Chinon, Saumur and Fontevraud (a royally-sponsored abbey complex associated with the Plantagenets). Please go to our website for more information about places to visit.

The property has recently undergone a major and thoughtful renovation. We incorporated high end improvements, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, yet preserved the essential original historic features of the house. A part of the house was rebuilt in 1663, by the owner at that time, the Counselor and the Attorney General of the King Louis XIII.

To-day, the English-speaking owners (Swedish/French couple who returned to the area after retiring) live in the main part of the house. If you wish, we can offer advice on any aspect of your holiday. Or, if you prefer, we can leave you in peace to explore the area in your own way.

Steps from your car is the apartment's private entrance. Walking up via the tower and the restored 350-years old stone staircase (just 16 steps), you enter the apartment's large and comfortably furnished sitting room and dining area. The fully-equipped kitchen is adjacent. The sitting room and the bedroom each have an exquisite original fireplace and are furnished with antiques. The very large, light and airy bedroom with it's south facing windows overlook the walled garden, the adjoining park and the rooftops of the old town. Guests are welcome to use the garden, garden furniture.

We have strived to provide not just the typical "self-catering" or "gîte" minimal accommodations, but to provide something like the "comforts of home".

A Fantastic French Experience

Guest: Tim and MaryBeth (Columbus, Ohio)
Date of Stay: 09/02/11 Review Submitted: 10/15/11

When we arrived in Loudun, France for our 4 week vacation we immediately felt the kindness of Elice and John-Louis. Our cosy apartment was "wonderfully" French and we had everything we needed at our fingertips. Each morning we were able to walk to the local bakery and purchase delicious bread and croissants. This beautiful historic apartment was the perfect get-away from the hustle and bustle of our fast pace American life. This was a vacation that we will never forget and we consider ourselves very lucky to have experienced the joy of French life. We hope to return someday soon. Without a doubt we recommended this highly!

Best place in the Loire Valley

Jean-Louis and Elice were the most interesting and cordial hosts imaginable and made our first trip to the French country a wonderful experience. The accomodations were spacious and the town of Loudon and surrounding chateaus were hard to leave. From flea markets in Chinon to vineyards in Saumur, there is a lot of history and beauty everywhere.

The stay there was even better than I could've ever imagined!

Guest: Jonathon (Foster City, CA)
Date of Stay: 03/02/11 Review Submitted: 04/04/11

I was a guest here for the month of March 2011. I have had so many wonderful experiences with VRBO properties, but I must say that this experience was the best by far. I absolutely enjoyed the company of Elice and Jean-Louis, they are truly wonderful people who are very knowledgeable about the area and its history. The apartment where I stayed was fully functional, quiet, and comfortable. The townhouse is located in the lovely town of Loudun, with wonderful history itself. I found it very close to the grocery store, gas station, bank, bakeries (very important!) and the town center which includes restaurants, brasseries, banks, pharmacies, etc. More importantly, the great location allowed me to spend the time I needed at many of the Chateaux in the area including, Chinon, Saumur, Montreuil-Bellay, Langeais, Oiron, Amboise, Azay-Le-Rideau, Usse, and Villandry. Others like Blois, Chambord, Chaumont, Amboise, and Chenonceau are not too far away. This was one of the most relaxing vacations I have taken, and it is in great part due to the wonderful hosts, the beautiful location, the town and the distance from the hustle and bustle of Paris. I highly recommend that you take the time to visit and enjoy this great place. A few helpful hints, (1) it is best to have a car to really get the best out of the area (2) there are many wonderful small towns and villages in the area with events and markets, I highly recommend getting the scoop from Elice and Jean-Louis, it will really enhance your visit (3) there is excellent internet service there, but if you need Wi-Fi, then you should bring a small access point (dlink or airport express worked fine) (4) if you forget something, I found Amazon.fr to be very convenient with quick delivery to the area and (5) Xoom.com is currently their preferred method of payment, I used it with no problems and used my bank routing number to transfer payment. That seemed to make a difference in the smoothness and safety of the transaction, also there was no fee charged for that type of transfer.

Owner response:Hello Jonathon, Many thanks for all those kind comments about our property and ourselves, but also for your good and true advices to other guests, mainly concerning the area and our relaxing location. There is now also Wi-Fi available both in the apartment and the studio apartment. We also like to tell you how much we enjoyed meeting you. For long time we will remember this American 'spring visiteur' and your interest in the blossom out of the first colorful flowers for the season in our garden! Best wishes Elice & Jean-Louis

Staying here was the highlight of our trip! My husband and I highly recommend this wonderful, delightful and centrally located studio apartment for exploring the Loire Valley. Elice and Jean Louis made us feel like we were visiting family/friends. They helped us fine tune the attractions in the area that particularly appealed to our interests and to make the most of our short stay (which fell over the quiet Sunday/Monday weekly provincial shut down). They guided us to delicious restaurants, local markets, and shared their own delicious home grown tomatoes and peaches. Elice and Jean Louis are gracious, generous and lovely hosts who truly care that their guests enjoy their stay. Merci Beaucoup!

My 12-year-old and I spent a delightful week with Elice and Jean-Louis. They are both friendly, witty, and the kindest hosts one could ever hope to meet. They made us feel warmly welcomed and went above and beyond what one would expect from hosts. I simply cannot say enough nice things about this wonderful couple. The accommodations were beautiful and had everything we needed. Loudun is a small, peaceful town, which is exactly what we wanted. We have travelled a great deal, and this certainly ranks as one of my best experiences ever. Merci Elice and Jean-Louis!

We just loved "our" house in Loudon, right in the centre of town. The house has been lovingly restored and maintains the romantic ambience of the 17th century complete with the most beautiful walled garden, full of flowers. Our hosts Elice and Jean Louis were warm and welcoming and most helpful with knowledge of the area. To be able to relax in the garden at the end of the day was a bonus, as was car parking right at the door - both rare in France. We would happily recommend this accommodation to anyone and share our photos if contacted. Loudon is an interesting medieval town close to many other fascinating towns, villages, caves and chateaux.

We have rented holiday apartments in France many times but have rarely had an apartment as thoughtfully arranged and nicely furnished as Elice's and Jean Louis's. In addition, they are excellent hosts--gracious and helpful with wonderful senses of humor. Loudun is a very pleasant town as well as a fine base for exploring the area. My wife and I give this apartment our highest recommendation and would be pleased to provide additional information if contacted by email.
