Location: Nevada City, Gold Country & High Sierra, California, USA (10-15 Minutes to Downtown Nevada City)

Accommodations:  Cabin, Studio + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2)

TARA is a cozy, romantic and elegant cabin. Located in the Sierra Foothills at about 1800 feet elevation, it is 650 square feet of charm nestled into a pristine private sanctuary of 30 acres of pines, cedars and oaks. Situated above Rock Creek, there are granite swimming holes below, waterfalls, and large flat rocks for sunbathing. This is a “too good to be true” place to get away from it all and have it all to yourself. The only sounds you will hear are birds singing and water tumbling in the creek. A cathedral of trees caresses you as you sink into the solitude.

Winter has nestled in the Gold Country, with chillier days and nights. These are perfect days for exploring the town, hiking or walking around our beautiful area, returning to cozy cabin comfort. Or just enjoy a slow and peaceful day at the cabin, lying in the sun, sitting at the creek, reading or napping. Evenings are sweet in the fading light of the day, perhaps enjoying a glass of wine in front of the woodstove, or soaking in the hot tub on the deck.

A great base for snow exploration, Tara is 1/2 hour from free snowshoeing and cross country skiing up Hwy. 20. It is 45 minutes -1 hour to downhill skiing and other snow fun at Boreal, Donner Ski Ranch, Sugarbowl and Royal Gorge. When booking the cabin in Winter months, we reccommend 4 wheel drive, if snow or heavy rain is in the forecast. The last descent to the cabin is steep, but paved, and the parking/turnaround area of the cabin is paved. But when snow or ice is present, it's best to be prepared and safe.

The cabin is one room with beam ceilings and wood floors, surrounded by windows with green tree-filled views and creek frontage. We have unsurpassed beauty in all directions from windows and decks. The cabin has french doors that open onto multi-leveled decks in back overlooking the creek.

You will immediately know you have made an excellent choice when you see and feel what TARA is offering.

Whether you choose to relax on the deck, cozy up to the woodstove on crisp evenings, dip in the swimming holes, sunbathe on the warm rocks in warmer months, or venture out to explore the historic sites of the Gold Rush towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley, you will be enthralled by the relaxed pace and ambience of the area. Nearby, you can visit the old gold mines at Empire Mine State Park, or at Malakoff Diggins. Or visit the South Yuba River State Park at Bridgeport and see the covered bridge, scenic river overlooks, enjoy hiking trails, and incredible swimming holes, some with beaches. There is swimming, boating, canoeing and kayaking at nearby Scott's Flat Lake as well. There is also Yuba River access at Purdon Crossing and Edward's Crossing near the cabin.

Nevada City, a fifteen minute drive away, has great shopping, and a variety of excellent eateries, from upscale fare to informal dining. The town also features live theater and music, bookstores ,outdoor cafes and art galleries. It is well worth a visit to take a walking tour of this historic and charming Gold Rush town, have a bite to eat, and perhaps have a wine tasting at our many local winery shops.

Grass Valley, like Nevada City, has many buildings dating back 100+ years, and is just a 20 minute drive from TARA. There are charming shops, restaurants, wine shops, the old Holbrooke Hotel, a movie theatre, antique shops, and two Cornish Pastie establishments, serving the favorite of gold miners long ago. The Center for the Arts is located on Main St., presenting wonderful live theatre and multi-cultural music events with top musicians.

My husband and I chose to spend our 1st anniversary at TARA. We were totally able to disconnect from phones, computers...any and all distractions. It was a wonderful retreat for us. Thank you, Linda for the extra care you put into making our stay memorable.

A Perfect Retreat

We enjoyed peace & restoration at Tara this August. Completely surrounded by nature, not another person or home in sight, this is pure relaxation! Bring your groceries and you're all set for your stay here. The kitchen is gorgeous and very well-equiped. If you're here in the summer, enjoy floating in the creek pools, reading on one of the many expansive decks, watching families of deer or wild turkeys cruise by, listening to the sound of the creek at night, relaxing in the (new) hot tub, long sunsets and complete privacy. We're already plotting a return! Highly recommended.

That about sums it up! Arrived at Tara's cottage for an extended weekend, stressed and burned out and returned refreshed, relaxed and renewed. The cabin was nothing short of quaint, charming and romantic; beautiful wood throughout, well maintained, clean and completely stocked. While photos typically portray the very best of a place, and indeed the cabin was exactly as pictured, the most spectacular part of Tara's is the vastness and beauty of the grounds. We lived on the deck enjoying the sounds of the river, the smell of the great outdoors and the stars at night. It was a very warm weekend and the creek below with private swimming holes provided us with the perfect opportunity to cool off, read in the shade and wade in the sandy bottomed pools. To top it all off, a basket of goodies with all the right stuff awaited our arrival and the property manager was very pleasant to work with and provided excellent directions. Looking forward to a return visit and making this our little special getaway to escape the world and reconnect with nature and eachother. Thank you for a truly wonderful weekend. Would highly recommend to any couple desirous of a secluded, romantic getaway full of nature without skimping on the luxury. Perfect!

Looking forward to coming back

Guest: Konstantin (Palo Alto, Ca)
Date of Stay: 04/28/11 Review Submitted: 05/09/11

I went here with my girlfriend recently, because we were both so stressed out that we just needed to get away from it all. We were so eager and excited based on the pictures and description, but we were still pleasantly surprised with what awaited us when we got to TARA. As soon as we opened the front door of the cabin, we knew this is exactly what we needed. We did not leave the property for the 4 days we were there, there were no cars, no lights at night, we went to sleep every night to the relaxing sounds of a rushing river, and we did not see a single person during our entire stay. We turned off all of our cell phones, put away our watches, and unplugged the clock. We woke up and went to sleep with the sun, and planned the day by the movement of the shadows. Our only regret is that we were not able to stay longer, and we very much look forward to coming back some day.

The Perfect Mix of Rustic and Luxury

Guest: J & B (California)
Date of Stay: 03/18/11 Review Submitted: 03/23/11

My husband and I were looking to get lost in the forest for a weekend of romance and decompression. We were not disappointed! We arrived to this one room cabin and were charmed before we even entered by the quaint surroundings and personal touches. Once inside, the clean and polished interior was immediately welcoming. The gift basket was a nice touch, as we enjoyed the wine and then a soak in the hot tub in the snow. Afterwards, both of us fit comfortably in the tub for our candlelight soak! The gourmet kitchen gave us all the tools we needed for us to spoil ourselves with steaks, strawberry french toast, and other yummy creations. The wood stove kept us warm and snug cuddled up in the soft and cozy bed. We were fortunate enough to have snow during our stay. The beauty of the woods surrounding us became breathtaking when it turned into a winter wonderland. I have to say that the creek (full and noisy during our stay) was relaxing to both watch and lull us to sleep. If the weather hadn't been rainy and snowy, we would have spent much of our time on the deck. We've had good experiences with vacation rentals in the past, but we really couldn't have asked for more for our trip. It has been a while since we've had a chance to spend some time away, and being totally secluded was just what we were looking for. The privacy added to the romance! Linda, the property manager, was extremely helpful and easy to deal with. In addition to her help over the phone, we were left with detailed directions for all the appliances, wood stove, and best ways to deal with anything in the cabin. Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend!

Relaxing Bliss For The Nature Lover

Guest: Zack (San Francisco)
Date of Stay: 08/27/10 Review Submitted: 08/30/10

We just got back from a long end-of-summer weekend at Tara and are already looking forward to our next visit. We brought some yummy food and were pleased to find a well-equipped kitchen to prepare it with. Frequent walks to the sunning rocks and pools in between reading books while a rain storm passed by...totally relaxing and we didn't see a soul. Thanks for sharing this special retreat in the woods.

Wonderful cozy yet modern cabin. We spent our days hanging out at the waterfalls/pools reading, swimming and relaxing and our evenings on the deck. The soothing sound of the water is always in the background. Can't wait to go back and I've already recommended to friends.

My husband and I went on a short getaway to Tara for his birthday. We had visited the cabin before renting and got a really good vibe from our quick chat with the property manager. We loved our stay, the peace, the woods, the river, the glimpse of a deer, frolicking in the waterfall, bliss. We also liked the cabin, it was perfect for the 2 of us. The only downside is that it's really hard to leave.

WoW! What a find. This place is a gem. I'm back a week and still feeling the serenity of my week at Tara. It was as if a perfect little house was dropped at a perfect campsite with the option of going to town in minutes. We chose to see no one for the week and we saw no one. We will definitely return. A+++
