Peaceful 10 acre forested retreat on quiet 11 acre spring-fed lake. The house is on 2 levels with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths and a small rustic cottage with 1 bed. This is a comfortable, well appointed country home; light and open, surrounded by forest, hills and the lake. Windows look out in every direction.

The main area on the 2nd floor includes a large, fully equipped kitchen adjoining a small deck with a gas grill. Also on this level is the living room and dining room with a wood stove (electric heat is also throughout the house), high wood paneled ceiling and a large deck. A queen size bedroom, twin bedroom, office with computer, and bathroom complete the upstairs.

Downstairs is a queen bedroom, small bedroom with a twin and trundle bed, library with satellite TV-DVD and a hide-a-bed sofa, laundry, and the 2nd bathroom. Outside is a fenced garden with the small cottage which sleeps 1. The back door opens to a deck and a large hot tub with high powered jets.

Open meadows around the house are for running and playing or watching deer and birds and night=time stargazing. The lake is private, shared by 4 other houses, mostly wooded with areas of wetlands, undeveloped and natural. A dock provides great swimming, sunning, and bird watching, or cross country skiing in the winter. It is linked to 2 more small lakes accessible by canoe from the dock. Northern pike are easy to catch with lures and a half mile walk leads to another lake that the Forest Service stocks with trout. Miles of Forest Service roads lead into a gentle wilderness. Tally lake, with a public campground and sandy swimming beach is an 8 mile bike ride (or drive) away.

If you have a larger group consider combining with the neighboring Lodge at Griddle Cake Lake #77149 on VRBO.

Wonderful place, Mike & Jill haven't forgotten any last detail! The house was clean, spacious, well-stocked. Lots of fun for all ages. The lake and boats are great and were enjoyed daily. Close proximity to both Kalispell for shopping and the town of Whitefish for the city beach and all the fun summer activities (we especially enjoyed the alpine slide!). We had four generations and had a great time. The activity options are endless, we never got bored. Games, fishing, bird watching, sun tanning, swimming, hikes, scenic drives, bike rides, etc, etc! Would love to come back next year!

Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Dear Mike & Jill, Thank you so much for doing this with your retirement home! How lucky we are! It was really great to e-mail with you prior to our stay, and by looking around your house, you seem like people I would like to get to know! Thanks you for all the maps you left (we used the kid's map quite a bit and you may have to make a new one for the next group). We caught 4 large pike, saw 2 turtles, something brown and furry in the water, a mother doe and fawn on your front lawn, several herons, a falcon, and dozens of very brave hummers. Your property is beautiful and though I'm not much of a snow bunny, I imagine it is a winter wonderland. Thank you once again and I imagine we may see you again.

What a wonderful week! You two have thought of everything we could have needed to have the vacation of a lifetime -- Boats, fishing poles, lifejackets for the little ones, a swimming dock, exploration maps to great walks/hikes/bike rides, BBq, hot tub and wading pool, games, WiFi, decks to catch sun and shade -- I'll stop now but could easily go on. Each of us will take home wonderful memories of our stay. Mine: A solo run/hike to the hill overlooking the lakes and valley. What a gift that time was with a toddler and a five year old! The house graciously accomodated two families with small children and your hospitality is unrivaled. We are already planning to hunt you down next summer. Ya-hoo! Thanks you so much.

We have had the most wonderful 10 days at your home! The fishing was great!! We caught pike (4 pounders), perch and sunfish! We enjoyed the use of your canoe and kayak very much. Your home is beautiful and the landscape is even more beautiful!! We woke up to the call of Loons on the misty lake. We enjoyed seeing does and fawns in the yard as well as woodpeckers, hummingbirds and squirrels. I loved cooking in your kitchen while looking out at the lake and trees. We enjoyed the use of your barbeque several times, and we used the hot tub everynight. Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity to get away from it all, with our 5 children. We would definitely love to come again!

Mike and Jill- Thanks again for a WONDERFUL vacation. It's our third time staying at your house and we couldn't imagine staying anywhere else in Whitefish. We had a fabulous time swimming, hiking, exploring, and visiting Glacier. We are sad to be leaving but we will be back.

                  Year Purchased: 1991

About the owner: Mike retired from a career as a mathematician and manager at Boeing 19 years ago. Jill did graduate work in psychology at The University of Chicago but 3 kids defined her role for years. She is also a painter and has been a spiritual teacher for 20 years.

Why the Owner Chose Private Homes:
Our life is focused outdoors. We ski, x/c ski, snowshoe, hike, mountain bike, float rivers, paddle our lake, fish, swim, bird, backpack, and golf. Mike has lived in Europe and Japan and has travelled all over the US. He has skied for 65 years at most major resorts. There is no place that fits us like the Flathead Valley. We've tried it all and the only way we'll leave the valley is when our ashes blow over the connental divide.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The peace and quiet. The numerous birds and animals. The gentle waters of the lake for swimming. The forest service roads for walking, snowshoeing, and skiing. Being 15 minutes from town, 30 minutes from my favorite ski area and 45 minutes from Glacier Park
