Contadora house description
Newly remodeled in January 2008, this five bedroom, four bath tropical island home has it all! New furnishings, wireless internet access, jungle and nearby beaches. A pleasant five minute stroll from the nicest beaches in the Americas! The property features a large "bohio" (thatched hut) where you can relax in a hammock with your novel, grill the fish you caught this morning, or enjoy a cold Balboa beer or a glass of wine!
Contadora Island (Isla Contadora, as it is known in Spanish) lies at the northern end of the Pearl Island Archipelago. “The Pearls” are Panama’s Pacific version of the popular Bocas del Tora and San Blas islands of the Caribbean side. However, where the Caribbean islands are often drenched during rainy season, during our rainy season on Contadora it usually only rains for a few hours during the late afternoon or in the evening. The rest of the day is sunny and ideal for sun lovers. Those who love to fish can go out daily with a local who will fillet the fish so you can cook it up for dinner, or you can take it to a restaurant that will cook it up for you.
As a year round vacation spot, The Pearls have been home to three seasons of the popular CBS television series “Survivor”, with Contadora serving as the show’s base of operations.
Contadora island is situated approximately 30 miles off the country's Pacific coast, making it a mere 15 minute flight from Panama City. The Island has numerous private homes, and acts as a refuge for many of Panama's most wealthy families. Main roads on the island are paved and some back roads are dirt. Most streets are lighted and can be safely explored day or night. There is, however, not even a single traffic light! A typical Contadora “traffic jam” consists of only two vehicles! While there are cars and pick-ups on the island, transportation is normally limited to golf carts, four wheelers, scooters and bicycles – some of which can be rented by the hour or day.
There are eleven beaches on the island. All have white sand and protected coves. The water is turquoise and teeming with tropical fish. Panama's only nude beach is found on Contadora Island, on it's southern side. All of Panama’s beaches are public by law. For a truly private beach experience, hire a local boat captain to drop you off on one of the nearby uninhabited islands for the day.
The island boasts several restaurants, including both European and local Panamanian specialties. There are three small grocery stores, a medical clinic that is open ever day, a small police force and one gas pump! There are no banks or ATMs on the island, so bring all the cash you think you will need.
The waters surrounding Contadora Island are typically warm (cool in February), turquoise colored, and ideal for swimming or snorkeling. Scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, sport fishing, and boat tours are available on the island. Humpback whales here and in an abundance from July - October during calving season.
Staying in Contadora Hibiscus House provides the ideal environment from which to enjoy all of the nature of the Pearl Island Archipelago. At the end of each day relaxing on the decks with your family and friends and having a cook out of the fish you caught that morning is a fine way to enjoy your vacation.

Isla Contadora is definitely paradise. I had the pleasure of visiting with a friend and my sister. Allan flew the three of us over in his Piper aircraft. He is a very professional and competent pilot. The short flight was scenic and smooth. Upon arrival we were transported to Hibiscus House in golf carts that were waiting at the landing strip. The B&B is located in a quiet neighborhood on the Island. Everything you need is a short walk or golf cart ride away (beaches, restaurants). The three of us ladies shared a suite and shared a bathroom with shower. The rooms were air conditioned and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was provided daily and Allan is a great host and cook. He makes a fruit salad to die for and his pancakes were never ending and delicious. We ate out at a local restaurant on the first night and the second night we "cooked our catch" on the large barbecue on the back patio of Hibiscus House. Allan joined us for dinner and it was a most pleasant evening. We spent our days snorkelling, fishing, sunbathing and taking in the sights of the Island. The local people are friendly and the scenery is incredible. It was difficult to leave this beautiful Island, but I will return for a longer stay next time. Thank you Allan for the great flights, your hospitality and making me feel at home in your B&B.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The house is immaculate and beautiful. The breakfasts were delicious. We felt at home and comfortable here.Contadora Island is one of our favorite places and from now on we will be staying here! The only regret we have is not finding this place sooner (or it not being built/remodeled sooner). I would highly recommend staying here to any of my friends & family. Thank you for giving us a home away from home on a tropical island!

I will complete this review although I will do so under protest - you see I would much rather keep this little secret all to myself so that I can enjoy this little slice of heaven all to myself. That would not be fair to the owners or the remarkable staff. For me Hospitality is defined as "behaving in a way that shows you truly care" and that is what you will find when you stay at this charming little B&B. You will also find elegant simplicity in the furnishings and spaces which are all immaculately maintained. We had an incredible time and i strongly recommend for anyone seeking seclusion, intimacy and above average service and facilities.

Manager response: Hibiscus House was previously used for overflow from the B & B. When Tony stayed here he stayed in Hibiscus House as a whole house rental and he simply called it a B & B. It is not a B & B and we do not rent it as such. It is only rented as a whole house.

We stayed in the Contadora Hibiscus House for a week in July to celebrate our engagement and to plan our wedding with both sides of the family and the matron of honor. This was an ideal enviornment for a family get together. We all felt at home and had our own bedrooms and bathrooms for privacy when needed. The living areas and very large outside decks provided a very spacious feeling. We spent most of our nights cooking up the catch of the day from our enthusiastic fishermen who left each morning at sunrise with a local fisherman. They, and we, could not believe all the fish they brought back. Thank goodness the local fishermen cleaned and filleted the fish before the guys brought them back to the house. The days were mostly clear with a few hours of rain mostly during the nights. One night we had an awesome lightening storm and we all watched it at one of the beaches. We were amazed at all the stars we saw - there is no light pollution on this island. Most nights we enjoyed hanging around the house talking and playing games. We had brought a lot of movies with us yet only watched one of them. We spent the days at the beach, some of the group went snorkeling each day and some went scuba diving during the day and once at night. Local fishermen took us to an unihabited island, dropped us off with our picnic and came back to get us as the sun was setting. It was like a dream. I would highly recommend staying at the Contadora Hibiscus House if you love nature, relaxing on the beach, swimming in the lovely clear water in calm bays, snorkeling and scuba diving, and generally chilling. If you need a lot of action and entertainment you may want to add fishing trips and have your own music and parties at night. We felt as if we had left the world as we know it behind and were surprized and sad when it came time to pack up and leave, before arriving we had wondered if a week would be too long. It was perfect and we all returned to our lives completely relaxed and we had created memories that we will all love re-visiting over the years. It was a great bonding experience for us all.

Year Purchased: 2011
About: We moved to Panama just over 3 years ago from Toronto, Canada. In our travels we fell in love with Contadora. In 2011 we decided to buy a home away from home which is now Hibiscus House. The two of us along with Nina our rescue dog have really come to enjoy the sun, the white sand beaches, turquoise waters with tropical fish, humpback whales, snorkeling , diving, birds, nature and the very laid back life style that Contadora has to offer.
We love tropical island life, the crystal clear waters, the scuba diving and the people of Contadora.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
You will feel at home in a very unique place. You can walk around the island each day and watch the sunrise and sunset. The snorkeling and marine life is one of the top features of the island.
