Superbowl Deal; 10% Off in May. Walk 2 Zoo, Balboa & More!

Year Purchased: 1954

Why the Owner Chose Hillcrest

We didn't buy the home; but my Grandparents originally bought it because of the excellent climate and close proximity to both the ocean and the desert. My Grandfather loved to explore the desert areas, but also loved tidal pools and the ocean. The wonderful weather throughout most of the year made it possible for them to grow orchids and other flowers in the backyard, and as San Diego grew, they found that they were just a hop, skip and a jump from anything they wanted to do! Mission Beach is where they would take us to swim, but La Jolla was another favorite place for our family to enjoy the beach as well as art galleries and great dining. The architecture in the neighborhoods surrounding the home is a great display of Craftsman, Mission Style, Greek Revival, Spanish and Gothic. While situated in a quiet, safe neighborhood, this house is an EASY 10 minute walk to the Zoo, and to Balboa Park and all that it has to offer. A day or two can be spent in the park alone, examining plants, pools, gardens, art work and watching musicians, or magicians! Hiking and biking are available in the park area, as well....all just a short walk from the home.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Most of all, this is a well kept home, and we take pride in making sure that your stay is a good one.....the house is clean and the furniture well maintained. The yard is attractively planted and taken care of. This isn't a beat up beach house, or a super expensive condo...but a reasonably priced home where you will feel comfy and will be able to relax in a QUIET setting after a big day of exploring the zoo, seaworld, swimming in the Pacific ocean, or traveling up the coast to Torrey Pines. Come home to Hummingbird Cottage, grab a cool drink and sit on the front porch and listen to the parrots as they fly over in the evening, or feel the ocean breeze as it cools the evening air. Sit on the patio in back and watch the hummingbirds as you sip your morning coffee and orange juice and plan your day. Whatever you choose to do, you will be happy to come home to this cottage when your day is done.

Owner's Map of Hillcrest

This home was purchased by my late grandparents before I was born, and has been a constant in our family ever since. Many summer vacations were spent here and San Diego has become a second home to us. The city, while large and very cosmopolitan, has a small town feeling; particularly the Hillcrest/NorthPark/UniversityPark areas, where there are neighborhood hangouts where the servers get to know you, people say hello as they walk by, and you get the feeling of having been here forever in a short period of time! My husband, who is a remodeler, spent 2 years remodeling the house and bringing it back to it's original condition as much as possible...while adding the conveniences people are seeking in a vacation rental. There are still family antiques in the home, and my Grandmother's baking dishes and implements decorate the top of the kitchen cabinets. Many great memories live in the backyard, where I would sit and draw flowers and birds as a child. In addition, we were San Diego Zoological Society members, and that's where I developed my love for wildlife, leading to my career training and working with birds of prey in Idaho. It's our hope that others will find this neighborhood and "Hummingbird Cottage" comfortable and relaxing in the midst of an exciting city with lots to see and do. Whether you enjoy the home with your children or as a quiet getaway for adults, we know you will find more to do in San Diego than you have time for! That's ok......just come back again!

    • Want a great cottage. It's in pristine condition and close to all the attractions in San Diego. And, when I say close, it is within walking distance to Balboa Park and the great San Diego zoo. It's in a great neighborhood and everyone was very friendly. I most enjoyed sitting on the deck in the back and watching the hummingbirds on the trumpet flowers along the fence. It was a wonderful place to spend a vacation.

    • The place is as beautiful and great as the description and reviews given here! I'd definitely would recommend this place to anyone visiting San Diego. The location is ideal - just 5-10 minutes from Downtown and not far at all from the beach. And yes, Balboa Park is practically right next to the neighborhood. It doesn't get better than this! The place is clean, neat, beautiful and has all the conveniences you need on your vacation.

    • My nine year old daughter and I loved our week-long stay at the cottage. We were in San Diego for the first time so I could attend a work conference. I was very pleased with the cottage itself which was clean, stocked and quaint, the quick response of owners, the safe neighborhood, and proximity to everything. Having traveled across the country from MA, it truly was a home away from home. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.

    • Wonderful cottage, perfect for a small family, everything was in great shape and tastefully decorated. Trish was very responsive to any questions/concerns we had, and the neighbors are very nice as well. Hillcrest is a delightful neighborhood: quiet, convenient, lots of interesting restaurants, walking and bus-riding friendly. Great central San Diego location--very easy to hop on the freeway, just a few miles/a short bus-ride to downtown, walking distance to Balboa Park. So much nicer than a hotel!

    • This is the best house we have ever rented with VRBO. The location is perfect. You can walk out the door and hike, eat at a fine resturant, go to a movie, and it's within 8 minute drive to the convention center. The house has been lovingly cared for and is extremely comfortable. Every moring I saw a hummingbird outside the breakfast nook. Very friendly and well kept neighborhood. When we visit San Diego we will always try to stay here.

The location is convenient to all sorts of places - eating, shops, parks. We loved staying in this house and would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, relaxing place to stay while in San Diego.
