My mom came to visit me in SD for a week and we didn't want to be cramped in my apt. This quaint little cottage was just minutes away from me and was a great place for us during her stay. Walking distance to beautiful Balboa Park and plenty of restaurants, shopping and sights on nearby University Ave. We enjoyed just relaxing, making dinner and sitting in backyard sipping a cocktail. We even managed to see a few While I didn't personally deal with the owners, my mother said they were wonderful to deal with and made our stay effortless.

This home is nicely equipped and perfect for a family of four. It is small for a home, but great size in comparison to a hotel or even a suite. It was nice to have the full kitchen and the backyard for bbq. We used the washer and dryer for laundry while we were there and that was nice as well. The kitchen had everything we needed and was nice for a vacation home. The neighborhood is quiet and really is only a short walk to the zoo. We went to University street one night for dinner and walked to Balboa park another day for a fun breakfast. Really nice people who rent out this property and they were great to work with. Next time we are in San Diego we will definitely try to get this house again.

Humming bird cottage is as delightful as its name. Set in a perfectly, peaceful location and within easy access to Balboa Park and a variety of shops. The cottage and facilities are exactly as described and shown in the photos. We used Wholefoods and Ralphs for grocery shopping (there is a discount club card for Ralphs attached to the house keys which saved a lot of money!) There are lots of brochures, menus and maps in the cottage which were very useful. There are many wonderful restaurants in and around Hillcrest. We occasionally used the taxi service but we did have a car which I think is necessary, especially if you want to visit the Ocean,Gas Lamp and downtown areas. We had a wonderful Christmas and new year in the cottage and would highly recommend it to all.

Trish and Hummingbird Cottage were the perfect owner and cottage for my first time using a vacation rental! I picked a rental with many positive reviews as I believe peer feedback is the best indicator of the kind of accommodation experience you are in for. We had the same wonderfully positive experience. The pretty cottage and its' facilities were just as described and met all our needs easily, and Trish responded to all enquiries in a prompt and friendly manner. She provided us with detailed information about checking in/out and additional information about what to do around San Diego. We're hooked on vacation rentals now rather than impersonal hotel chains! We felt very comfortable and relaxed hanging out in the cottage in between sightseeing trips, like it was a second home. One review mentioned the house did not get warm enough. We came in similar circumstances - a rainy and cold week, but found that the main heater made the house more than toasty warm to the point where some people were in t-shirts! Hillcrest was the perfect base for a group of 25-40 something people to sightsee in San Diego. We ate at the delicious farm-to-table The Linkery in the next suburb, North Park, had breakfast at the local Hash House A Go Go with their enormous twisted American farm food meals, and got Thai take-away from Saffron in central San Diego which consistently wins best San Diego take-away (a short drive but extremely worthwhile). We went to the San Diego zoo which I highly recommend - after being to many zoos, this one was a fresh breath of air and had things I had never seen before. We also went to La Jolla to say hello to the seals and to Little Italy and the Gaslamp district for the farmers market and shopping (a bus goes from there right to one street away from the cottage). One day, we drove to the quaint mountain town, Julian and the Anza Borrego desert. Again, it was cold, rainy and foggy, but was a worthwhile daytrip. Thanks Trish and Fred!

We stayed for four nights in November and really enjoyed it. The house is impeccably clean, well stocked, and in a good location to everything by car. We were also able to walk to lots of things like restaurants, the store, the zoo and Balboa park. The owners were very easy to work with and gave good instructions for the care of the house. While there we went to the zoo, Balboa Park, Gaslamp District, the waterfront, Torrey Pines state park, Old Town for great mexican food...lot's of walking, what a wonderful city; we will be back!

I have used vrbo.com previously on my vacation stays; most recently, last year in San Francisco. I must say, this charming house was beyond my expectations. It was just as charming as the photos depicted, but even felt like we were "home" as soon as we walked through the door! Hummingbird Cottage is such a perfect name for this adorable and quaint abode. Everything was picture-perfect upon our arrival; the house was immaculately clean and incredibly well-stocked. We did not want for anything during our stay. The location was absolutely awesome! We were never more than 10 minutes from everything on our itinerary. The neighborhood itself is gorgeous. We patronized several restaurants in Hillcrest and they were all excellent. There were countless choices for excellent dining, shopping and sight-seeing within a few steps from our front door. I would definitely stay here again and recommend Hummingbird Cottage to all friends and family thinking about a trip to San Diego. The owners provided excellent customer service; they are genuine and friendly and provided super information about the area to us before we arrived. We ate at Gulf Coast Grill, Cafe on Park and Hash House a Go Go (excellent!!!) in Hillcrest. We picked up our groceries at Ralphs and were very pleased with the prices. The owners made several high recommendations that I am so glad we followed: be sure to eat lunch at the Prado in Balboa Park and be sure to take time to see the Hotel Del Coronado. I personally recommend taking the tour of the hotel; it only cost $15pp and was wonderful. After the tour, we ate at the Sheerwater in the hotel; it was excellent. We also highly recommend taking a trip to the Point Loma lighthouse and Cabrillo National Monument. If you want to see some spectacular views of San Diego and like taking pictures; these are a must see. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time in Old Town and taking a tour of the (haunted) Whaley House. Our time ran out quickly and we were sad to say "goodbye", but we definitely plan on returning and staying again at this perfect home in Hillcrest. The owners were completely professional from the minute I called to inquire about their listing. A+++++, what else can I say?

Hummingbird Cottage became my home for a week when my daughter got married in San Diego, and I could not have picked a better place! It truly felt like a home, with everything I needed to feel comfortable. I really wish I had been able to spend more time in the house during that busy week! And wish I'd taken the time to sign the guest book. The photos sold me on the house, and it turned out to be even better in person. Some great qualities about it: immaculate without feeling "sterile"; very safe, quiet neighborhood; walking distance or very short driving distance to many restaurants, stores, and the park; a private and restful back yard with a soothing fountain; and a cozy little breakfast porch. I loved having the TV behind the fire screen! The next door neighbor was extremely helpful and welcoming. Trish, the owner, was gracious and easy to work with throughout the entire process. She was helpful, answered questions, and in a notebook in the home she provided information about local restaurants and other nearby amenities. I felt as if I had met her in person! If you're there on a Sunday, don't miss the HIllcrest Farmer's Market a few blocks away. We got the best massages ever at The Knot Stop - definitely a do-again thing! Loved the Afghan Restaurant, Khyber Pass, on University near the over-street Hillcrest sign. So many fun things to do and great places to eat..... My daughter only lives a few blocks away, so the location was perfect for that week! Thanks Trish, for helping to make my mother-of-the-bride experience feel more like I was "at home" than an out-of-town visitor!

We are returning to Hummingbird Cottage for the third time this year. We have been thrilled with its pristine, peaceful beauty and lovely setting. The well-equipped kitchen allowed us to fix many of our own meals, and we were able to walk to Balboa Park's many attractions (Zoo, Science Museum, Bicycle Rental) easily. We loved to read on the patio, and the sunroom/breakfast nook was our favorite indoor location for coffee and conversations. The twin beds in the second bedroom allowed our two children to share a room without sharing a bed; very important to them! The cottage's location was perfect. Not only could one walk to the Hillcrest shops, but the actual street it was on was very quiet. Similarly, the bus stops two blocks away, but you can't hear it from the house. If steps are an issue, the cottage has only about 6 steps in front, and it helped that we could park in the driveway. There are only a few steps then, into a level house. This helped for bringing in groceries. (It is a short drive to the Whole Foods, on University, or to Von's; there are coffee shops and many stores within walking distance). Trish is a joy to have as an owner, very caring and efficient. She is also flexible and understanding, and an outstanding person. We would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative.

What more can one say - Hummingbird Cottage is just as described. The house is very clean, spacious and well equipped. In a perfect location within a lovely quiet neighbourhood. Our friends who live in San Diego have already recommended it to their friends! Best eating we had was Shores in La Jolla and Urban Solace in Hillcrest. Trish & Fred should be proud of their home.

We had a wonderful stay at Hummingbird Cottage! The cottage was clean, neat and comfortable. There was plenty of room for two couples and everything was readily available. Trish was great to work with and made the visit so easy. Everything was just where she said it would be. The neighborhood was quiet, easy to get to and great to walk around. We even ventured out on the public transportation and it worked like a charm - wonderful for two couples sharing one car and wanting to go in different directions. We're already planning our next visit.

We loved our 5-night stay at Hummingbird Cottage. The owner is great to work with and provides very detailed information about check-in/ check-out as well as things to do/ see in the area. It was very close to Balboa Park and convenient to other area attractions yet you are surrounded by a quiet neighborhood. The cottage has everything you need except food and there were even some of that with non-perishables like spices available. It was the perfect place of rest while we visited our son who was recuperating from minor surgery. Loved it and will definitely try to stay again if we get to return to the area.

Die Antworten per E-Mail kam super schnell, was wg. Zeitverschiebung nicht immer einfach ist.

We have rented homes from coast to coast and truly felt this was the cleanest and best stocked of all the places we've been! Trish was delightful to deal with before and during the stay! I have shared the link with my sister who has a college student in San Diego - told her it was soooooooooo much better than a hotel room! Reading in the back with hummingbirds around was truly magical! I certainly hope this lovely place will be available the next time we are in San Diego!

We will happily recommend Hummingbird Cottage to friends and relatives. In fact, we would love to live at Hummingbird Cottage!

We stayed at Hummingbird Cottage for one week during our kid's spring break. The place is very nice and cozy; it felt like a home and was comfortable to stay in. The neighborhood was very quiet and felt safe. We really loved the location. Within a matter of minutes you could be on the freeway and into the city life, or on your way to the many attractions San Diego has to offer. The zoo is really close just as advertised and was our favorite attraction. There are tons of restaurants to choose from. Trish and Fred were very responsive to any questions or concerns. We have rented through VRBO numerous times and thus far have had good experiences. We can recommend the Hummingbird Cottage to others with full confidence.

Being able to walk to Balboa Park (as in a few blocks!) was a major draw. Also loved walking around Hillcrest, sampling local restaurants, coffee shops, Trader Joe's, and more...I am recommending it to friends, and look forward to returning...

We had a great stay at this pleasant little cottage very close to the Zoo with easy walking distance to Hillcrest. Peaceful urban setting, helpful neighbors made it just like home. Kitchen had great amenities with separate dining room and we cooked for ourselves every day. Glorious San Diego weather afforded lots of opportunity to use the secluded garden nook amidst the flowers and the hummingbirds. Look forward to another visit soon. Don and Jeannette from BC, Canada

"We had the very good fortune to find this charming cottage for our family's Spring Break getaway this March 2010. Honestly, the value for this immaculately kept little house is unbeatable. The house itself is lovely, in keeping with the Arts and Crafts style that we love, with updated kitchen, bathroom and great appliances. It's only a 10 minute walk from Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo, a hop-skip-and a jump from all ammenities, good coffee, great restaurants and funky little stores, and well situated to the freeway entrances (thank you Sea World, Legoland, Mission Beach and the Wildlife Animal Park). I envision a time when my husband and I can go back and appreciate walking in the quaint neighborhood of Hillcrest, reading quietly in the peaceful back garden or having a glass of wine on the front porch. As it was, we had a great space to entertain our two boys (ages 4 and 7) and enough elbow room, with a wonderful kitchen to cook in (fully equipped), a place to do laundry and a safe and attractive place to call "home" at the end of the day. I would highly recommend the "Hummingbird Cottage" for anyone who wants a comfortable, cozy spot to stay in San Diego, with all of the conveniences of home in an EXCELLENT location. Trish and Fred were a pleasure to deal with, and were more than willing to go that extra mile to make sure that we were taken care of. You'll be glad you made the decision to stay here!"

We stayed at Hummingbird Cottage for 8 days the beginning of December 2009. It was a great location - close to Balboa Park and close to University Street shopping and restaurants. The cottage was fully equipped with everything one would need including umbrellas when it rained. My only problem was that it was a cold rainy week and the house does not get warm enough for two seniors not used to cold temperatures. Unfortunately we did not bring wool sweaters or flannel pjs. Otherwise we were delighted with the cottage and its location and we loved the sunroom off the kitchen for our breakfasts when it was warm. This place would be great for kids who could go outside on the patio and be protected by gates from getting out.
Owner response:Wow...this is our first review that is not a 5 out of 5. As everyone knows, weather is one of those things a homeowner cannot control. Even in San Diego, the rain does fall occasionally. Our home reaches 80 degrees very easily and quickly, which is usually plenty warm for most folks. The thermostat is easily controlled in the living room, and there are additional heaters throughout the home. Our advice to guests is to give us a call with any questions regarding the home....most of the time, we can solve any problem/concern. In this case, we weren't contacted and I was not aware of any questions about the thermostat until this review was posted. I believe the temperatures were in the high 50's the week in question, and we always suggest that you bring a sweater or light jacket for those times when you're on the beach in the evening, or walking along the harbor...or as in this situation, San Diego experiences some infrequent rain. We want all of our guests to experience a "5 out of 5" visit in our home, but if we aren't asked about a question the guest has, we cannot give them an answer.

We were looking for the perfect place to spend quality time with out grown children in San Diego, but I knew we didn't want a hotel. I wanted a more homey experience with a kitchen and place to hang out together. It also needed to be super affordable. After comparing hotel costs (all meals eaten out) with the cost of the hummingbird cottage that has a kitchen where we could eat meals in and save money, the price was about the same, maybe we even saved money!. We cooked all out meals together and hung out in the house and on the porch and back yard with our coffee and had amazing quality time with out 20-something kids. BEST IDEA I HAVE EVER HAD. My husband and kids raved. We even invited family and friends over for Thanksgiving dinner (13 people!) which my daughter and I cooked together. Can't do that in a hotel room. Loved every moment and didn't feel like we had to "go out" all the time. Could sleep in without hearing hallway and housekeeping noises. Just perfect! Of course, we also visited favorite spots, restaurants and of course had a day at Disneyland! Hummingbird Cottage will exceed all your expectations!

We stayed at the Hummingbird Cottage in November and had a wonderful time. The cottage is very cozy & comfortable. We had everything we needed right there in the house. We really enjoyed staying in and cooking most of our own meals. We stayed here as we searched for our new home since we are moving from Boston to SD in January. Staying here made this so much easier than it would have been in a hotel. Our 5 year old daughter was with us and she was very happy! The neighborhood is very quiet yet still located close to the action. We would definetly stay at the Hummingbird Cottage again.

My husband and I, (+ 19 month old daughter)- wanted to take a small vacation with the "home away from home" experience. We really wanted something with easy access to restaurants, parks, family areas, grocery store etc. and this was by far the best. I was very nervous because this is my first time doing the vacation home experience, all I can say-we won’t be going back to hotels anytime soon. I was nervous I wouldn't get what I paid for- BUT THE TRUTH IS I HAD NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. Trish was the best; she answered all my questions and concerns asap, even while we were at the rental. Great customer service. The description was very accurate regarding the location of the rental. With a 19 month old, being walking distance to the park was essential. It took us 10-15 min. to walk to the zoo. A couple nights we would walk to University Ave. and find some place to eat. We'd go down to blockbuster every night to rent movies. Everything was so comfortable, easy, and relaxed that it made this vacation, PERFECT! I loved that the house had its own driveway; we drove a Chevy Suburban, which is not easy to park sometimes. Everything was clean and well maintained when we got there which was nice. The house was a little on the warm side, I LOVED IT, but my husband didn't. My husband loved the porch and the rocking chairs; he made it a point to go out on the porch to drink his coffee in the morning, and to rock with our daughter before bedtime. If you have younger children, you have to watch them carefully while on the porch. Make sure you bring your own baby plates and silverware. The house is so cute!!! The layout was perfect for us. This house had everything that your house would have at home. If you forget something, chances are, they will have a spare at the house. I have already told my parents that this rental is a must to visit. It’s great for all walks of life- there is something there for everyone. Everyone who knows me knows about this vacation. I was so nervous going into this but was so excited in the end that I had to tell everyone about it. This place was really great- my family and I will definitely be back. -Fenton Family ( Oct-Nov 09')

We easily used the public transportation to get around, even with our kids (age 7 and 10) in tow. There are lots of trails in the surrounding area that my husband and I used for our morning run. The owners are very accomodating and helpful. This vacation house is a great deal!

We spent 4th of July at the Hummingbird cottage and just loved sitting on the front porch, enjoying the great neighborhood views and weather. (it was a great break from the heat of Phx). We rode our bikes to balboa park and to university street for eats and drinks. The cottage is clean and cozy. It was nice to stay in a home rather than a hotel for our extended weekend. We look forward to coming back again some day.

We stayed for a week with our 2 1/2 year old and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We walked to Balboa Park every morning and spent the days at the beach, La Jolla, the zoo, etc. The house is a perfect size for a small family, very clean and tidy, and extremely quiet. Great neighborhood!

Our family had a great time staying at this great cottage. It was the perfect size for our family of four. The kids had room to play and we didn't have to worry about them being quiet like we would in a hotel. The location was great. We were right around the corner from the zoo and 15 min. from the beach and Sea World. We will definetly stay here again.

We left this gorgeous cottage with much sadness, as our first family vacation ended recently. This home was so centrally located, we were literally five minutes from everything! We enjoyed all the quaint shopping, convenience to the grocery store, farmer's market and wonderful local restaurants. This house was the perfect retreat after a fun filled day at all the San Diego attractions. Our 16 month old daughter has never been a way from home and felt totally at ease here. Very relaxed, calm and beautiful! And EMACULATE! We loved it and can't wait to visit again!

We instantly fell in love with this charming rental and the surrounding neighborhood. The home is beautifully decorated, clean, and comfortable and has all the amenities one could ask for. The location is ideal for those who enjoy a quiet retreat that's within walking distance to eateries and shopping. Hillcrest is a friendly, lively district worth exploring. Balboa Park is also a short walk away. It seemed most everything else in San Diego was just a 15 minute drive away. The renters, Fred and Trish were responsive, friendly, and easy to work with. You can't go wrong choosing Hummingbird Cottage for your next trip to San Diego.

My nine year old daughter and I loved our week-long stay at the cottage. We were in San Diego for the first time so I could attend a work conference. I was very pleased with the cottage itself which was clean, stocked and quaint, the quick response of owners, the safe neighborhood, and proximity to everything. Having traveled across the country from MA, it truly was a home away from home. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.

I stayed her for a week in the spring during a conference in San Diego and absolutely loved it. Peaceful, charming, close to everything and in a great neighborhood, the house felt homey and had every amenity. There's a fabulous farmer's market nearby on Sunday, don't miss it!

We absolutely loved our stay at Hummingbird Cottage. It has every ammenity a family could ask for. It was so clean and comfortable. The location is perfect. It's lesst than 15mins. to just about everything. We walked to Balboa park for a picnic and walked to the San Diego Zoo. The neighbors were so friendly and I absolutely loved the Hillcrest neighborhood. I can't say enough good things about our stay. It was literally a perfect vacation. After we left Hummingbird Cottage, my family and I went to Los Angeles and stayed in a very nice hotel in Marina Del Rey and the entire time we regretted having left Hummingbird Cottage and wished we had stayed there longer. The owners were great and very responsive. We asked if we could stay an extra day when we got there and they got right back to us and arranged the extra day. The restaurants nearby were all so good but the best part was being able to go to the grocery store and cook for ourselves. There is everything a family could need for cooking. Thank you so much and I can't wait to come back.

The cottage was perfect for myself and my two older children (ages 24 & 18) for a week's stay in San Diego. Everything was very clean, the kitchen was fully equipped, the beds were very comfortable and the shower was great! Bedding and towels were all very nice, we had all the comforts of home! We loved the central location; we were within 15 minutes by car of most of the places we visited and we could easily walk to resturants, the zoo and all the museums of Balboa Park. We hated to leave and we hope to return next year. I highly recommend this rental for your visit to San Diego. The owners are very responsive and professional about their rental; very easy to work with and they are responsive to any and all questions or concerns. They have clearly invested a good deal of time and effort to insure that your vacation will be an enjoyable one!

Our trip to the San Diego area was a great success in large part because of this rental. We appreciated the homey feeling instantly. The children enjoyed walking in the friendly neighborhood. The owners felt like good friends rather than strangers. Trish and Fred were so responsive and helpful. We will definitely be "renter repeaters". Evenings were nice and quiet. Having Balboa Park in your "backyard" is a wonderful characteristic of this rental. The home is well kept and very clean. This rental is worth every penny spent. Enjoy fellow vacationers!

Wonderful cottage, perfect for a small family, everything was in great shape and tastefully decorated. Trish was very responsive to any questions/concerns we had, and the neighbors are very nice as well. Hillcrest is a delightful neighborhood: quiet, convenient, lots of interesting restaurants, walking and bus-riding friendly. Great central San Diego location--very easy to hop on the freeway, just a few miles/a short bus-ride to downtown, walking distance to Balboa Park. So much nicer than a hotel!

This house was perfect for our visit to San Diego. It is impeccably maintained and perfectly located on a quiet street. We enjoyed a picnic lunch on the front porch and also enjoyed hanging out in the backyard. I would definitely stay here again.

This is the best house we have ever rented with VRBO. The location is perfect. You can walk out the door and hike, eat at a fine resturant, go to a movie, and it's within 8 minute drive to the convention center. The house has been lovingly cared for and is extremely comfortable. Every moring I saw a hummingbird outside the breakfast nook. Very friendly and well kept neighborhood. When we visit San Diego we will always try to stay here.
