Casa Davide is situated high on a hill above the village of Valdottavo in the Serchio Valley, 17 kilometers from the city of Lucca, in Northern Tuscany. The wooded area is famous for its porcini mushrooms and the view from the house is a magical mix of mountains, valleys and untouched villages perched high on chestnut covered slopes. Thirty minutes north lies the Garfagnana, a beautiful mountainous region framed by the Apuan Alps and the Apennines that offers some of the best hiking and mountain climbing in Italy.
The 18th century farm house, set within a terraced, gated complex at the end of a private road and including a beautifully landscaped 40-foot tiled pool, was rebuilt by an American artist over 25 years and sleeps nine to ten comfortably. The main house, which opens onto an expansive stone courtyard, has a large first floor sitting room, kitchen, bath and two bedrooms, with another sitting room, bedroom and large bath on the second floor, and sleeps 5. It is comfortably furnished with traditional and antique pieces, many original to the area. A pretty separate apartment on the ground floor has its own entrance, kitchen and 40-foot private terrace overlooking the expansive view and sleeps two to three. A small metato (?chestnut smoking house) facing the courtyard ?has been charmingly redone as a private sleeping aerie, an ideal retreat for a teenager in search of a private space.
By car, the house is one hour to Florence, 45 min. to Pisa, 40 min. to the Italian Riviera and an hour to Cinque Terre. You can reach all of these places by train as well; the local station is one K from the house. In the village of Valdottavo you will find all daily conveniences: ?there are 7 grocery stores, the closest of which is reachable in five minutes on foot and offers fresh bread baked in a wood oven daily. The house itself has a pizza oven, barbeque, fully equipped kitchen, hi-speed internet connection, stereo, television and dvd player. All bedrooms are provided with screens and plug in fans. Towels and linens ample for 9 people are included in the rent, and a large washing machine and outdoor clothes are provided. Children are welcome.
There are excellent supermarkets nearby, and many small food shops where you can find fresh bread and homemade pasta, extraordinary local pecorino cheeses, wonderful fruits and vegetables, and wines from the Lucchese hills. There are also a large number of modestly-priced restaurants in the area serving regional specialties and pizza.
The beaches of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi are within an hour's drive; the towns of Carrara, Pietrasanta, the Cinque Terre and the spas of Montecatini are all easy day trips.
Activities nearby include clay tennis courts, beaches, antiquing, garden and villa tours, hiking, and trekking.
