Location: Robbinston, Down East, Maine, USA (2 1/2 hours east of Bangor)

Accommodations:  Lake Side Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)

Relax in this cozy cabin alongside Boyden's Lake. Enjoy the call of the loons, the beautiful sunrises over the lake or a romantic stroll along the lake road. Bicycle around the lake (13 miles). Paddle in the double kayak across the lake (about 2 miles). Birdwatch for eagles, loons, kingfishers and herons.

The lake is usually still and like glass at sunrise. Ripples form throughout the morning. The afternoon usually brings a nice breeze. Some afternoons are windy enough for a sail in a small boat.

A tandem kayak is available, but bring your own boat if you like.

Boyden's Lake is beautiful year round! Fall foliage color peaks in mid-October. In winter, bring your snowshoes, your snowmobile or go ice-fishing. Stargazing is excellent year round. Enjoy fresh seafood - lobster and clams in summer, scallops are great during the winter holidays. Smoked salmon is also available locally.

The cabin is just a short drive from the easternmost point in the USA - the peninsula which is the location of the West Quoddyhead lighthouse; it is part of the West Quoddyhead State Park in Lubec, Maine. Other local attractions include historic Eastport, Maine, the Passamaquoddy Indian reservation in Perry, Maine and President Rosevelt's summer home on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Campobello.

Twenty minutes from the Canadian border - the bridge from Calais, Maine to St. Stephen's, New Brunswick. (Remember to pack your passport and driver's license to return to the United States.)

    • We had the pleasure of staying at the cabin for a week in late June 2008. We were looking for a nice, quiet place and Karen's was absolutely perfect! The cabin is down a little lane with a few other cottages, and all of the neighbors were so nice. Our son especially enjoyed the visits from the local dogs (he donated a few tennis balls and a frisbee to their cause...). The lake itself is so gorgeous and unspoiled. You're lucky if you see more than a handful of boats all day. You actually see more of the loons than you do people out there... A huge bonus was the tandem kayak. We got a lot of use out of that. It was so much fun. The cabin itself is very cute and welcoming. Karen has done a great job of furnishing it, and has some wonderful decorations and books, etc. There's plenty to do if you get the itch to do anything at all. Canada is obviously only a stone's throw away, as well as Eastport and Calais. One night we didn't want to go anywhere really, and had noticed earlier that they were making pizza at the Gulf station down at the end of the lake road. We were driving ourselves nuts trying to find it in the phone book so that we could call down and have a pizza ready to pick up. We couldn't figure it out, so we ended up having to drive over there, so if you stay at the cabin, remember that the Gulf station is known locally merely as 'Strawberry Patch'. The only listing in the phone book for the place is under that name only. Good pizza! ...and yes, fresh strawberries at least when we were there. We're going back again this year and hope to finally meet Karen! Thanks Karen!

    • My wife and I rented this cabin for two weeks in the fall and enjoyed it enough to call and make arrangements for a third week. You are close enough to the lake to toss a rock underhanded from porch to lake. I did. Some days we went on day trips (Eastport, Campobello, St Andrews, Lubec) others we just stayed at the cabin. I even walked around the lake one day but it was before I knew it was 13 miles. My wife fell in love with Eastport and we drove the 15 miles 2 to 3 times a week. The view from the Eastport Dock is the thing memories are made of. My favorite was the fact we found 3 weekly road side farmer markets and several local farms where we bought fresh locally grown vegetables all within 18 miles.
