Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 6)

**Multi-week discounts available (see rates)** The CORAL POOL HOUSE, Kaheka Ko'a, is a NEW OCEANFRONT HOME with snorkeling and swimming in your backyard. It is directly on the shore of the WAI'OPAE STATE MARINE PRESERVE in Kapoho. Kapoho is a small rural community on the Big Island, near Hilo and 40 miles from Volcanoes National Park. The home has an awe-inspiring view of the 50-acre marine preserve and beyond.

IN YOUR STAY AT THE CORAL POOL HOUSE YOU WILL EXPERIENCE:
* Unparalleled panoramic ocean views of Kapoho's coastline, marine preserve, reef and sea.
* Snorkeling in an extensive natural aquarium with a rainbow of fish and coral.
* Swimming and floating in tranquil pools.
* Modern accommodations in a new home (2008), including whirlpool tub.
* Tropical scenery of the rural Puna coast.

OCEAN VIEW: The Coral Pool House captures an EXPANSIVE OCEAN VIEW from its shoreline location. The living area, bedrooms, lanais (covered decks) and hot tub all have a panoramic ocean view. You can catch the natural rhythms of the day: sunrise, clouds painting the skies, tidal flows, waves crashing on the outer reef, passing whales (December - April), and sunsets while relaxing in the living area, beds, shaded lanais or whirlpool tub.

MARINE PRESERVE: The shoreline location of the Coral Pool House provides easy access from its grounds into the tranquil waters of the Wai'opae (why-o-pie) Marine Life Conservation District for snorkeling, swimming and floating. The marine preserve is one of only 11 in the Hawaiian Islands. The preserves were established to protect the unique marine life of these special places. Wai'opae preserve has among the greatest density and diversity of marine life of all the Hawaii preserves. The coral and fish-laden pools are home to 11 coral and over 100 fish species, and the endangered green sea turtle. Wai'opae preserve lacks the crowds found at most State marine preserves due to limited public parking.

SNORKELING and SWIMMING: The grounds of the Coral Pool House meet the sea where you can slip into its tranquil coral pools. The pools offer FABULOUS SNORKELING, for the beginner to the experienced. The inner pools are calm 360 days a year due to the protective outer reef. Thermally heated fresh water seeps into these inner pools, making them noticeably warmer. They are ideal for swimming in, as well as snorkeling, or for those that wish to float and relax. Outer pools may be enjoyed by the more experienced snorkeler, offering greater density of corals and some fish species not seen in the inner pools. Large predators (e.g. sharks, barracuda, etc.) are absent due to the shallow barrier reef. On the grounds of the home is a shallow warm pool (80-85 degrees), great for those experiencing snorkeling for the first time or for kids to play in. Children may be observed at play from inside the home, the lanais or patio. We provide some snorkeling equipment (masks & snorkels) and information on fish and corals that you may encounter.

NEW OCEANFRONT HOME: The Coral Pool House offers the comfort of a MODERN FULLY APPOINTED HOME while taking in its exquisite natural setting. All rooms and the upper lanai have open beam ceilings. Family dining may be enjoyed indoors or on the lanai. The ocean breeze keeps the home mosquito free. The covered ground-level patio, near water's-edge, is an enjoyable place for a picnic. Meals can be prepared in the fully appointed kitchen and on the lanai's BBQ. The whirlpool tub is a wonderful place to relax and "soak" in the view. The bedrooms have new quality beds and private baths, with a deep soaking tub in the master bathroom. The master bedroom has a king bed. The second bedroom has both a queen and double bed. Phone service includes free unlimited long distance. The home also has fax, printer/copier, satellite LCD flat screen TV, DVD, CD, stereo, cards, board games, videos and books for your enjoyment.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS: Tropical landscapes offer stunning scenic drives along the coast, cascading waterfalls and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you can pull yourself away from Kaheka Ko'a, a drive along the SCENIC PUNA COAST is not to be missed (beginning one mile from the house). Nearby, there are several other scenic drives, hikes and parks, including a large thermally heated swimming pond (2 miles). The historic village of Pahoa, with shopping, groceries, fresh fish market and restaurants, is 10 miles away. A 40-mile drive takes you to Volcanoes Park, with its active volcano. Other volcanic features may be experienced closer to Kapoho, such as: Lava Tree Park (7 miles) and Kalapana (15 miles), where lava is flowing into the sea.

The area is served by the Hilo International Airport (29 miles). Hilo has many options for shopping, dining and entertainment. You may view several picturesque waterfalls on the Waianuenue River, which flows through Hilo.

Further information on the Coral Pool House (Kaheka Ko'a), the Wai'opae marine preserve and local attractions will be provided following your booking. Please inquire if you have any questions.

Oceanfront Home, Fabulous View & Snorkeling from Property

Year Purchased: 2008

Why the Owner Chose Kapoho

Several years ago on a visit to the Big Island we discovered Kapoho. Wai'opae marine preserve offered the best snorkeling we had experienced. Its clear-calm waters are like snorkeling in a large fish and coral-laden aquarium. We also enjoyed the rural, non-touristy, nature of the area with many places to explore. We were so enchanted with Kapoho and the snorkeling that we purchased property directly on the shore of the marine preserve and built our vacation home where we and our guests can step right out of the house to go snorkeling and swimming.

The Unique Benefits at this House

The Coral Pool House is one of only seven oceanfront homes on the 50 acre Wai'opae marine preserve. It is the only new home and was designed to capture the breathtaking ocean view from every room. From the grounds of the home you can slip into the Wai'opae marine preserve for a fabulous snorkeling experience. Due to the protective reef, the pools are rarely affected by high surf conditions that can commonly spoil ones snorkeling adventure elsewhere. The preserve offers variety in your snorkeling experience as you move from the inner pools, near shore, to those near the reef.

The ocean view from the home is magnificient. I especially enjoy watching the sunrise as it paints the sky, relaxing in the hot tub while soaking in the ocean view and grilling a dinner of fresh local fish on the lanai BBQ. I never get enough of watching the inter-play of sea and land directly from the home or while hiking and driving along the scenic Puna coastline.

D

O

Owner's Map of Kapoho

Gail and I (Jim) live in northern California's Sierra Nevada mountains with our two children and numerous animals. While visiting Hawaii, many years ago, we discovered the remarkable underwater world of the Islands. We have returned many times to explore Hawaii and snorkel in its waters. Although we love our mountain home, visiting Hawaii provides a very different experience and gives us a welcome break from our long winters.

    • What an incredible home in an absolutely fantastic setting! We had one of our best vacations ever at The Coral Pool House. The home was ideal for our family of four and it was heaven to be able to walk out our door and have fabulous snorkeling anytime we wanted. We loved being away from the hustle and bustle of tourists and we were able to completely relax in your beautiful home. We also enjoyed our hike at the Volcano and watching the lava flow into the ocean at night in Kalapana. We would love to return to Hawaii some day and would definitely want to stay in this lovely home again!

    • Thank you for making this wonderful and beautiful house available for our vacation with our two little girls. You have created an extremely comfortable home in a spectacular location. We were stunned by the amazing sweeping views when we first walked in the door and spent one of the best weeks ever in Hawaii, and most of it right at the house. The girls spent hours a day in the warm pool right out the back door. They were quite fond of the 'crab hole' as they called it where we watched crabs eating dinner at low tide, small shrimp with glowing eyes at night and small schools of baby fish at high tide. We snorkeled and explored all of the tidepools at all hours of the day, and every day! Truly one of the most enjoyable snorkeling areas we have visited. We spent hours gazing out the windows, from the decks, and from the hot tub watching the days slowly change from sun rise to the fading light at dusk and spectacular night skies. The night air, breezes and gentle sound of the surf made for many great nights of sleep, even for our little one who is generally a restless sleeper! We did manage to tear ourselves away for a few short excursions, the highlights being the Kalapana lava viewing area, Kaumana cave, a beautiful lava tube near Hilo (thanks for the large flash lights!) and the Hilo farmers market. The only bad part of our stay was the morning we had to leave! We look forward to visiting Kapoho again and again!

    • Staying in this beautiful home just steps away from the Kapoho tide pools, was incredibly relaxing and fun! We stayed here with our two kids(9&11)and we are glad we did!! This area wasn't crowded and the people around the community seemed very friendly. We spent lots of time hiking out on the lava rocks and snorkeling the pools. The snorkeling was the best on the island, in our opinion. We snorkeled Honanau Bay and were disappointed because of snorkeling here at Kapoho first. We appreciated the books in the house for identifying some of the fishes and birds we saw here. We felt this home had the best view of all the homes in this area. The owner's description and photos of their home is very accurate. The home was very clean, well decorated, and SO comfortable. We haven't slept so well in a long time!! One night we watched a lit up cruise ship pass by on the horizon right from the bed, and we would wake up in the mornings and just stare at the amazing views from our room and the lanais. The home has a well stocked kitchen that we put to good use to make some delicious Hawaiian dishes. Moonfish is yummy! The owners were easy to work with, very helpful, and communicated well with us on expectations. Once we made reservations, they even sent us a packet that included things to see and do in the area. We used this home as our hub to go and see attractions near by. We enjoyed staying here very much and would highly recommend this home to anyone who wants to rent a vacation home on the Big Island of Hawaii. We were thrilled that we were able to reserve this home, but I bet once the word gets out about this home, it will be booked solid!!

    • Wow! Great house! Great place! My wife and I enjoyed a spectacular visit in late September/early October. The orientation of the house encourages a sense of isolation from the hoards of humanity, a prospect we always welcome. The ever-changing, up-close views of gorgeous Big Island nature - we delighted in many fantastic sunrises, and on clear nights, awesome star clouds - makes this property top notch. We recommend guests consult The Big Island Revealed guidebook to prioritize their must-see-and-do lists (or to find other helpful information). We recommend some things: Suisan in downtown Hilo offers great fresh fish (as does the fish market in Pahoa); if frustrated by high supermarket prices, check-out the organic market in Pahoa at the eastern end of town or the many farmers' markets; snorkel at Champagne Pond near Kapoho Bay (ez walk); snorkeling in Kapoho tidepools is a must-do, and you can rent equipment cheaply at Nautilus in Hilo; South Point also offers incredible snorkeling opportunities (day trip); the lava tube shut-down at the end of our visit (fun night visit if active), but we enjoyed a helicopter ride over the area (if you fly w/o heli-doors on, make sure you secure wallet/keys and wear warm clothes (very windy and noisy); if you hike in local rainforests, bring map, cell, water, light, ponchos and food (we got lost late one dark, rainy afternoon for 1.5 hours - under-maintained trail at Kalopa State Park - and worried about spending night).. ENJOY! We did. Thanks!

    • We were privileged to be the very first guests at Kaheka Ko'a. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this uniquely designed brand new home. The area is wonderful and uncrowded. The snorkeling is so convenient and magnificent in the pools. We have snorkeled in many parts of the world and this is special due to the close proximity of the beautiful fish, coral and turtles. You can make your way from pool to pool - each one with ledges and deep spots - to make for an exciting adventure. You don't know what awaits you just out of sight. The house itself has 180° views of the ocean from both the living and sleeping levels. You can't be any closer or you would be wet. There really wasn't any need for air conditioning with the ocean breezes. It was comfortable any time of the day or night. There is no better sleep than hearing the sounds of the ocean and feeling the breezes blowing through an open window, and not being cold. I wish I could bring it home with me. The location is also great for day trips. We visited the Volcano Park, recent lava flow, Lava Tree Park, Hawaiian Botanical Garden, historic sights, and Hilo. Shopping is nearby in Pahoa and the local Sunday Swap Meet is great to get your weekly supply of fruits and veggies (and souvenirs) as well as a wonderful cultural experience with entertainment and many delicious choices for lunch. We would definitely recommend this rental. Enjoy!
