Barn (for 5+2), Stables (for 7+2), Bee House (for 2) - The Ancient Barn
- Minimum stay:3-7 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Two fascinating Grade II listed historic buildings. A lovely 15th century Ancient Barn and a 17th century Old Stables are part of a medieval farmstead. They sleep up to 5 and 7 respectively with the option of renting a medieval Bee House with two additional beds. VisitBritain four star rated, they offer original features (old woodwork, beams and flagstones) with every modern comfort. They are in pretty, unspoilt countryside close to the delightful old market town of Castle Cary with its interesting shops and pubs. There are numerous places to visit, including Glastonbury (Abbey and Tor), Cadbury Camp (King Arthur's Camelot), historic houses and gardens, while the fascinating cities of Wells, Bath and Salisbury are also within easy reach. There are many places to interest children too - such as Wookey Hole Caves and Longleat theme and safari park.
The accommodation: : The Ancient Barn, The Old Stables and the Bee House are situated between an old farmhouse and a small working farmyard (cattle and sheep) so there may be some normal farming activity at certain times of year. Our guests have never found this to be a problem but if you do not enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of a farmyard then this is not the place for you! All three buildings are comfortable at all seasons - warm in winter, cool in summer, and provide an ideal base for touring this fascinating part of the west of England. Both Barn and Stables have VisitBritain four star ratings. We also have a Green Tourism Award.
A car is essential. We ask our guests only to smoke out of doors.
We keep free range chickens which children are welcome to visit and to feed. We sell eggs and seasonal veg.
Throughout the year... : Somerset has lots to offer: historic sites such as Glastonbury Tor and Cadbury Camp (also known as Camelot - a hill fort made famous by King Arthur), ruined Castles and Abbeys, delightful country pubs offering delicious meals made from local produce, National Trust houses and famous gardens. For those who enjoy shopping there are numerous antique and craft shops in the area and Clarks Shopping Village is a short drive away at Street. This is a very special place in an area of England that as yet has hardly been touched by tourism. The countryside is pretty, the pace of life is gentle and the local people are friendly and helpful. Many of our guests return again and again to this lovely part of the world.

'The best click of a mouse button I've ever done!' 'We were absolutely delighted to find a place for once, which is far more than its blurb claims.' 'What a lovely surprise. Clean, warm and not spooky!' 'A wonderfully warm and romantic stay - only wish we could stay longer.' 'We'll be back.' 'As an American I can say that your barn has been my favorite accommodation in all 6 years I have lived in this country. We wouldn't change or add anything - comfortable beds, excellent shower, well lit, books and it's great to have a dishwasher. I'm going to be sorry to leave.'Did you find this review helpful? Our stay in this perfectly located barn in Somerset was peaceful and restorative. Pek and Will were very welcoming and accommodating they provided some great toys and even little bikes for our kids as well as a range of books and dvds. The barn is very cosy and well equipped. We had a great time cooking and lazying around reading as well as enjoying some lovely walks in the nearby lanes and countryside. Having an interest in history, it was exciting to stay in such a place with its historic profile. There were many quite moments (when the kids were asleep) marveling at the old original beams which are well over 500 years old. The village of Castle Cary is a pleasant 20-25 minute walk and provides all the necessary amenities. We made use of the supermarkets, library and playground there. The barn was our base over a 5 week stay to explore Somerset and surrounding counties. It is situated very close to a number of fantastic spots to visit, such as Glastonbury Tor, Wells, Frome and Stour Head Estate. All of these are within 30-40 minutes drive. Bath is also a short drive of just under an hour. Thanks again to Pek and Will for their kindness and hospitality. The Ancient provides an excellent option for accommodation for either families, couples or small groups.Owner response: Thanks so much Tim - it was a pleasure to have you staying here. Pek & Will

We had the most wonderful few days in the Ancient Barn, beautifully restored and both an impressive piece of history and a cosy and delightful place to stay. Every comfort has been installed, making it a place suitable for everyone, including I think older people, who will find it very comfortable. All around is glorious Somerset countryside, and many important and interesting places to visit. There's so much to enjoy here. The owners are delightful, helpful and very welcoming. It feels like a privilege to have the chance to stay in this venerable Barn. We couldn't recommend it more highly.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers.
