Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2000

I moved to Maine 17 years ago, thinking it may be a temporary stay. I never left. Nature is one of the most important things to me and Acadia offers more than I can possibly keep up with in my spare time. In the middle of summer I still am able to hike without seeing another soul, go for a bike ride any time of day, kayak in any number of lakes or coves, and swim at the end of a long day. As a landscape designer I see the beauty of nature and capture that in my work. And for those days when I just want to get away, I find solace in the fact that I can walk out my back door and step into Acadia National Park.

Why the Owner Chose Somesville

My office was located on Mount Desert Island for nearly 9 years. The structure that housed it was previously a seasonal rental and it begged to become one again. I completely renovated the interior in 2008, I moved my office to a neighboring town, and Ripples Cottage was reborn.

The Unique Benefits of this Cottage

Ripples Cottage is located on a quiet side street with little traffic. One of the things my family and I love about staying there is the solitude of the space. Being set back from the road even when cars do pass by, we feel protected. We also love the meadow behind the house and woods edge that forms the perimeter of the property. It is a true home away from home feeling for us when we have the luxury of staying in our own rental.

We had a wonderful week long stay at Ripples Cottage in June. The cottage was lovely, clean and had everything we needed. the woodsy area and landscaping was loved by us and our 2 daughters who found it to be a magical place. The location is terrific for exploring Acadia National park, Bar Harbor, day trips to Southwest and Northeast Harbors, swim at Echo Lake. The owner is so pleasant and helpful as well. We loved our stay and would defeintly come back!

Lovely cottage and grounds; central, wooded locale

Date of Stay: 08/09/08 Review Submitted: 09/05/08

We thoroughly enjoyed a three-week stay at Ripples Cottage, and plan to return next year. The house is clean, cozy, and meticulously well-maintained, with new appliances and an ample supply of linens -- all labeled clearly for ease of identification and use. The owner is a landscape architect, and her expertise shows; the grounds are beautiful, too, with many plantings also labeled -- and a blueberry bush, from which our children were invited to pick berries. We are a family of five (with children aged 4, 10, and 15), and the Somesville location was perfect for us. We had good access to Acadia, and spent most of our time biking on the carriage trails (with nearest entrances about 10-15 minutes away by car), which we loved. Within similarly short distances by car: excellent swimming in Echo Lake, and the small, appealing port town of Southeast Harbor; a hiking trail on Beech Mountain. A manageable bike ride for a rider comfortable with some hills and car traffic: to Beech Hill Farm, with excellent organic produce. Bar Harbor, with an ample supermarket and at least two nice little natural food markets, is about 20 minutes away by car; for single items, there's a well-stocked convenience store much closer (Somesville One-Stop). Somesville itself has a few nice-looking little attractions (a good bookstore, an antique shop, a repertory theater), and there's a little, local swimming spot, just down the hill from the house. We'll have to get to those, next year . . . One other thing: We found the owner to be extremely responsive and accommodating when we found, on arrival, that the wireless internet connection was down. Since (sadly) we had to get some work done while there, we had to establish some sort of internet connection. The wireless problem turned out to be a little tough to fix, but was well on its way to solution by the time we left (I'm sure it's up and running, now); meanwhile, the owner went well out of her way (all the way to Bangor, in fact) to establish a dial-up connection, for use during our stay. She has been entirely pleasant and helpful with every aspect of the rental process.

Perfect vacation rental to explore Mt Desert

Ripples Cottage is meticulously maintained and in a great location for exploration of Mt Desert Island. There is plenty of room in the cottage to spread out, relax and experience the serenity of Somesville. Bar Harbor is a short pleasant drive, as are other Mt Desert destinations. All of Acadia National Park is within easy reach. I also highly recommend the Somesville amateur theater, which is active in the summer months and only several miles away. This is an ideal rental property for anyone who wants to spend time on Mt Desert.
