Sunrise Cottage on Mahalas Lane

Located in Owls Head, this quaint and unique 1930s cottage is nestled at the end of a private lane. Overlooking Crocketts Beach and Penobscot Bay, Mahalas Lane is serene and relaxing, a true seaside get-away.

Crocketts Beach, when the tide is out a bit, is a perfectly sandy beach all the way out into the water. Children, less fragile than adults, do not seem to mind at all the refreshing aspects of the Maine water, and enjoy the swimming without having to negotiate bothersome rocks with their feet. (Adults seem to appreciate this pleasing aspect as well.)

Crocketts Beach is especially well-suited for kayaking and provides for a nice ability to explore, by kayak, Seaglass Island (a very small island about 1/4 mile off the beach which you can almost walk to at low tide), nearby Crescent Beach and Sheep's Island. There are really only about three other cottages-homes on Crocketts Beach, so the beach is rather private and unique in that sense as well.

The cottage is architecturally unique, reminiscent of a ship with a bowed front, with pristine white ship-lap throughout and a built-in bed.

A split-rail fence contains the ample yard and natural gardens surround the house. It is a pleasing space any time of the day; sit on the patio for morning coffee and watch the sunrise over the ocean or stroll down to the ocean-front beach house for an afternoon of reading.

The main house sleeps 8 in four bedrooms. The master is on the first floor with a king bed, an ocean view and an adjoining bath.

The well-equipped kitchen has spectacular views of the water and opens into the living room and dining room areas, both with ocean views. Plenty of windows offer natural light and light sea breezes.

There are three bedrooms upstairs and one full bath. The first bedroom has a queen bed and the second bedroom has a queen bed and one twin built-in bed. Both have views of the water and comfortable furnishings.

The third upstairs bedroom, a master bedroom, has a private bath and one king bed with an ocean view.

There is also a beach cottage on the property, located at the water’s edge. The guest cottage offers sleeping space for two on a double bed, as well as a spacious deck. This is the perfect place to sit and watch the day come to an end.

The location of Mahalas Lane is ideal. Owls Head is home of the Transportation Museum, the Owls Head General Store (home of the award-winning Loaded 7-Napkin Burger and old-time penny candy) and the Owls Head Lighthouse where Spot, the Springer spaniel, is buried by the lighthouse bell (see the true story of Lighthouse Dog to the Rescue).

Owls Head is a small, quiet community just minutes from Rockland (the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Primo Restaurant, In Good Company wine bar, Fiore premium Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars, Planet Toys and Jess's Market for lobsters and fresh seafood - Down East Magazine's readers' choice for best seafood market in Maine).

Thomaston, Rockport and Camden are also nearby. Rockport is the setting for the Samoset Resort (the well-appointed La Bella Vita restaurant with a magnificent view of Penobscot Bay, the tranquil, fresh, clean, seaside aesthetic of The Spa and a beautiful seaside, championship golf course) and Maine Sport Outfitters (offering for purchase or rental items for almost any conceivable sporting interest ranging from kayaking, biking and running to camping and winter sports).

These larger cities offer museums, restaurants, shopping, festivals and endless cultural activities. Cape Air flies into (and out of) Owls Head (the Knox County Regional Airport) from Boston (a one hour flight) and other regional locations. Car rentals (Budget) can be made from the Knox County Regional Airport.

The house offers a washer and dryer, Bosch dishwasher, cable television and Internet connection.

I hesitate to write a review because I don't want this gem of a place to become too booked up. The house is well located, well equipped and nicely furnished. It was perfect for our group and we'll definitely return. The photos representing the house are accurate and the owner is very easy to work with. I do not hesitate to recommend this property at all!

We stayed at this lovely cottage the week before Easter when most people would not consider going to Maine. The pictures are accurate and we felt very much at home the moment we arrived. There were lots of things to do in the area but we mostly took walks on the beach, visited 3 lighthouses, ate lobster and relaxed. The owners and manager were excellent to work with and resolved any issue or answered questions in a very timely manner. We really enjoyed our first visit to Maine and look forward to returning someday soon!

My family and myself met at Sunrise cottage for a family reunion, We found the cottage and the cabin across the street just what was needed for some rest and relaxation. The rustic cottage was well equipted and maintained. We enjoyed going to the local lobster pounds and exploring the rocky coast of Maine including schooner tours from Camden, The windsor Chair factory in Lincolnville, the many museums, shops and down east wonders. Going up the coast Arcadia National Park is a must see as well as having pop overs on the lawn. I was nice to have a washer and dryer to keep up on the towels and linens as well as to have a dishwasher for those butter dishes from the Lobster and Steamer feed. The new owner of the property was very accomodating and even called to make sure our stay was everything we expected. There is plenty of parking with a lovely yard planted with perrenials and even a few cherry tomatoes (like candy) growing in a small vegatable garden by the back door. Stone walls, on both peices of property, natural cedar siding, the package made for a nice stay at the coast

Our family had awonderful stay at this cottage. The beach is beautiful and very safe for my young children. The house is charming, very pretty with a nice yard for relaxing. The bungalow down by the water was a great bonus. I can't say enough what a pleasure it was working with the owner, she is absolutely lovely. We will be staying here again this summer and can't wait.

After having visited Crockett Beach the year before, we looked for a house in the area last year and found this one! What a delight. Owner has remodeled and redecorated this fabulous cottage into a really nice retreat... Beautiful ocean views and charming beach cottage, too. Easy to get into town. It is so nice to get up and go down to the beach for quiet morning solitude... And, yep, we are going back again this year. The owner is very easy to work with and is always making more updates... Can't wait til October!
