Gojo Machiya is a traditional Kyoto-style townhouse located in a small alley of Kyoto, the old capital of Japan. The house is in the hard-to-beat location with restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, post office, ATMs, train/bus stations etc within a short walking distance while offering a quietly relaxing time in a traditional surroundings. Gojo Machiya is a very old Kyoto style townhouse with an interior completely renovated in July 2007. Downstairs has a brand new fully equipped kitchen, a living area with a flat screen TV with 200 or more channels both domestic and international, a modern western-style bathroom, and Tsuboniwa garden. Upstairs has Main bedroom with two single beds and a tatami room with a work desk and a laptop computer with broadband where two sets of high quality futon can be laid out for two more guests. All linens/towels and body soap/shampoo/conditioner are provided for your convenience.
Our house is at the end of a little alleyway where all the neighbouring houses have long been occupied by artisans/craftmen who still work at home folding fans, designing Yuzen kimono patterns, and carefully placing gold plates onto gorgeous hand painted fans.
Walking towards North for five minutes will take you to one of the seven Geisha districts left in Kyoto called Miyagawa-cho. There, you can find beautifully dressed Geisha and Maiko walk around gracefully through paved streets. Walking towards West for five minutes will take you to a hip cafe ran by one of the Apple designers, where you can enjoy a perfect cup of Cappuccino by Kamo river. And walking towards East for 5 minutes, you'll find yourself in the midst of Kiyomizu Pottery galleries along the way to Kiyomizu Temple, UNESCO World Heritage listed site. Walking towards South for 5 mins, you'll find an organic Nepalese restaurant and a hip organic grocer next to each other on the way to a tomb of one of the greatest Shogun, Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
With two bicycles provided, you will be an expert of Kyoto City by the end of your stay!
Our house manager, Shuji, who is also one of our alley neighbours, will be more than happy to assist you when you need a helping hand to make your adventure a little less stressful.

Thanks a lot! We had a great time in Kyoto and enjoyed every moment, every street, every temple... and every sushi bar! And your machiya was part of the dream, a house as we were not even hoping to find-you have an amazing little house and a lovely neighborhood. Thank you for sharing all that with us. Warmest regards,

We had a fabulous time in Kyoto and was great to have a taste of local life in the machiya. Many thanks to Shuji and his mom for their kindness and hospitality. We've been to Kyoto before but never to a machiya and we loved it! This was my mom's first time in Kyoto, in Japan and in a machiya and she was ecstatic. Thank you again.

Thank you for a lovely stay at your machiya - we have found it very cozy and well-equipped, and very comfortable. We have had only 2 1/2 days here and could definitely spend much longer but next time we'll come in summer!(the crowds have been pretty good though!) Many thanks.
