The location: Wapping is a riverside community in the heart of London since Roman times 2,000 years ago. Its streets and buildings ooze with history, and a unique village feeling comes from the fact that Wapping has no through roads. This blend of peace and central location (between London’s old and new financial districts) has given Wapping strong Royal ties and attracted celebrities including Helen Mirren and Cher to make Wapping their home. Tower Bridge and the Tower of London are walking distance away on cobbled streets dating back centuries. Stores just a short stroll from home include top-class bakery and butcher, as well as grocery, fresh produce, fish & chip shop, pharmacy, newsagent, florist, post office, private cab firm and liquor store. Local amenities include four parks, swimming, sailing and tennis. For riverside pub lovers, three of the best and most historic in London (the Captain Kidd, Town of Ramsgate and the Prospect of Whitby) are local.
Nearby attractions: All of London’s major tourist attractions are within easy reach. Directly across the river is the 400-year-old Mayflower pub, embarkation point for America’s founding fathers in the Mayflower ship. Between the flat and Tower Bridge is St Katharine’s Docks, a hidden gem with a marina for millionaires, cafes, shops and the Dickens Inn, one of the hanging sites for pirates and tax-dodgers. On the opposite riverbank at Tower Bridge are the Design Centre and the pubs and famous gourmet restaurants at Shad Thames.
Walking further along the River Thames will soon bring you to City Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tate Modern Gallery, the Millennium Bridge, London Bridge City or Canary Wharf, each providing a unique way to experience London. In the East End, Brick Lane offers a rare variety of cultures for arts, shopping and watching the world go by, while the famous Sunday morning street markets at nearby Columbia Market (flowers & plants) and Petticoat Lane provide distinctive atmospheres of London.
