Adjacent to the medieval watchtower of Diamante along the west coast of Calabria and a 2 minute walk from the sea. Enter the apartment through the main entrance to the building. A second doorway leads to the apartment where you immediately enter a 450 square foot room where the kitchen, dining and living room are located. The floor is completely covered with terracotta tiles, and give a warm, rustic feeling.
Just to the right is the newly renovated kitchen with a marble counter top, a four flame stove, electric oven, electric toaster oven, two sinks, refrigerator and freezer. Plentiful counter space and all the cooking utensils you need allow you to prepare and serve any meal for up to five people. Due to safety concerns (staircase and railings) this apartment is rented exclusively to adults and children 7 years and older.
In the middle of the room is a couch and two armchairs with a coffee table between them. Against the wall near the living room is an entertainment center with TV, stereo, bookshelf, drawers and a full length closet. A small table with an alabaster reading lamp allows for evening reading in the living room. The space is beautifully lit, and may be dimmed, if so desired.
Between the living room and the dining room table is a large window that lets in direct sunlight from midday to sunset. From this window facing south, there is a view of the sea, as well as a private garden below. No cars are visible, just the tiled roofs and neighboring windows and terraces.
Close to the entrance, and off of the living room is the downstairs bedroom which has a pair of bunk beds, a reading table, and a closet. This room has a large window that faces a lush, private garden below, the medieval watchtower, the oldest part of town, and mountains beyond to the East. This window receives direct sun light from sunrise until midday.
At the top of a wooden staircase is the loft area, which includes the master bedroom and newly built bathroom. The master bedroom is very spacious, with a king size bed, two bed side tables with reading lamps, and a desk that receives light from the window below. A hideaway single bed is folded up next to the closet, and serves as a small couch when not in use. The beds all come with full sets of linens. The bathroom with shower is located at the top of the stairs and has a tiled floor and walls.
One quarter of the downstairs area, closest to the large window, has a 16 foot high ceiling, and gives a wonderful sense of space. The apartment has beautiful Italian tile scenes from the Amalfi Coast and ceramic platters that are embedded in the walls. It receives direct sun all day long and a refreshing evening breeze that descends from the mountains to the east to cool off the summer days' heat.
The apartment is located in the oldest part of Diamante, a coastal fishing village that is a peninsula that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea of Calabria. All around the apartment are pedestrian alleyways and stairs that have no car access so the apartment is very quiet. Parking for residents is available within a one minute walk from the building entrance. The western most point of Diamante with a small cove and rocky coastline excellent for swimming is a three minute walk away. A short walk in the other direction brings you to the marina and the Diamante seaside promenade. The old section of town is full of murals by various artists and a myriad of old alleyways and characteristic Calabrian homes.
Diamante and its neighboring locations has much to offer for all tastes. Apart from simply walking through the old town or along the dramatic "lungomare" promenade where everyone gathers in the evening, sunbathing and swimming along one of the many beaches, boating to a nearby islet, or hiking the Pollino National Park, one can venture on day trips to any one of a multitude of historic and archaeological sites and hilltowns of the surrounding area. Depending on the time of year, activities of great interest are typically festivals celebrated by local townsfolk.

Want to go back--badly

My wife, 2 children, and myself stayed ay John's place this July. The unit is "European"; we were not used to he stove and things are a bit smaller over there than we may be accustomed to, and there as no air conditioning, but the nights were reasonably cool and everything was entirely workable. In addition, John was always more than helpful, and so were the people in charge of housekeeping and checin/checkout. The town itself was beautiful, and pictures fail to do justice to the water. A trip to Los Arcos and the hidden beaches/cave bar is highly recommended (ask John about it), but the water is beautiful everywhere we looked. On the last day, the winds had changed and the surf was dangerously rough, but every other day it was lake-smooth...and clearer than anyplace else we have eve been. Highly recommend this town and unit, it helps to speak Italian (very few in Diamante speak more than a bit of English) but we did not and survived--it would have just been nice to be able to communicate better. Especially since everyone was almost ridiculously friedly. Very nice trip, beautiful country, and we have every intention of returning.
