Our fully furnished and richly decorated 2-bedroom apartment is ideal as a vacation hideaway or a relaxing retreat if you plan to stay longer. Crowning the top of a California Craftsman duplex, this 1,000-square foot treasure is situated only one mile from the ocean in beautiful Mar Vista, right next to Santa Monica. We're on a treed residential street that offers mountain views from our patio deck, and top-flight restaurants, cinemas and antique shops are only 2 minutes away. If you drive down our cross street (passing a very convenient Costco and a Vons supermarket) you'll arrive at the fabulous beaches of Santa Monica and Venice in only 4-5 minutes.

Bright, clean and inviting, the apartment has recently been exquisitely renovated with a respect for historical detail. It features new hardwood floors, Persian carpets, new furniture and all new fixtures.


The large and airy master bedroom features casement windows (morning light) and a walk-in closet, reading nook and cedar linen chest. The equally large and sunny second bedroom, which can also be used as an office, includes a writing desk facing the casement windows (afternoon light) with a view of the neighborhood, and a beautiful studio upright piano in excellent condition (ideal for musicians).

Our cozy den features a new reclining armchair and sofa that can pull out to an additional guest bed, along with a widescreen hi-def television complete with DirecTV premium channels, DVD player, and a 5-CD stereo.

French doors in the den open to a spacious outside patio deck with a distant view of the mountains and ocean. The deck overlooks a charming backyard (lit by lanterns at night) that is home to our lemon and orange trees -- you can pick lemons right off the tree from the deck! -- and framed by bougainvillea, a trickling fountain and an herb garden.

Our sunny kitchen offers lots of tiled countertop space, an over-the-range microwave and stove, a large refrigerator and a versatile oak breakfast trolley/wine bar next to an adjacent dining area. There's also a full bathroom with bathtub and shower and new fixtures.

All rooms are newly painted, and there is central heating. The apartment comes with high speed WIFI as well as a landline phone with local calling included. Off-street parking is available. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AND POWERPOINT SLIDESHOW CAN BE EMAILED UPON REQUEST.

Laundry facilities are in a separate backyard cabina and are shared with the downstairs tenants. Entrance to the apartment is via a private stairway off the backyard.

No pets and no infants, please. Minimum age of 6 years old, accompanied by parent.

$1,200/wk,  $175/night for 2 guests. Monthly rates negotiable.
Each additional guest: $35/night ($245/wk). Maximum 4 guests. (Kids < 5 stay free)
Minimum stay 4 nights. A $400 deposit must be made in order
to confirm your reservation. We accept cash, PayPal, travelers checks,
personal checks (from major banks only)) and bank money orders.
All amenities, phone, internet, Wi-Fi, premium cable TV, free parking and
laundry facilities INCLUDED . No taxes. $75 house cleaning fee.

This welcoming and charming apartment was a wonderful refuge for our somewhat emotional stay, as we were settling our son in as a freshmen at Loyola Marymount University. We were six minutes to the campus, as well as being so close to Santa Monica, Venice, shopping and fabulous restaurants. This elegant apartment with modern conveniences, internet access, beautiful artwork, backyard garden and fruit trees is an absolute treasure and reminded us so much of apartments we have rented in Europe. James is an incredible host and we feel blessed having made his aquaintance...we look forward to staying at the "Dacha" on future visits to Los Angeles. It's a must!

    • Appartement très agréable, étage supérieur d'une maisonnette avec terrasse entourée de verdure. Place de parking dans la contre allée. C'est très facile à trouver grâce à mapquest, pas trop loin de Santa Monica, confortable, propre, mignonnet, calme, facile d'accès, la plage la plus proche est à 5 minutes en voiture, elle est plus propre et calme qu'à Venice même, on peut s'y garer gratuitement dans la rue avec un peu de chance, louer des vélos, des rollers. James est sympathique et discret. Une adresse en or.

    • We have stayed, my woman companion and I, at James' Datcha for a full week. The appartment is very charming, clean and comfortable, with all of the amenities we expected. The neighborhood is friendly and Beethoven Street calm, though it connects with main boulevards, which is important. The location is exactly as advertised, near the beaches and easy to reach from any place in Los Angeles. And the terrasse of the Datcha is great for the apéritif(s)! Everything was positive, and James is a great host.
