Family Vacation to be remembered

Guest: debbie (shippensburg, pa)
Date of Stay: 05/13/12 Review Submitted: 05/23/12

We had an amazing first visit to the Asheville area. We are so happy we "stumbled" upon your listing. Our family of 7 (with 3 teenagers and 2 twenty's along with their 50 something parents) had a wonderful time. The property is beautiful, very well maintained. The hot tub was extremely popular and the creekside unit gave our 20's children a place to stay that felt private. . .One of my favorite locations was the screened in porch where we shared breakfast together each morning. I enjoyed sitting and reading early in the morning before the family got up on the porch also. The fireplaces warmed us up nicely on some chilly nights. We were conveniently located to the Biltmore, downtown Asheville, the Mt. Pisgah Inn which was amazing and great horseback riding, along with amazing hiking. Yes, we squeezed all of that into our 5 days! We put this on our "will definitely return to" list.

Home...Everything and More!

Guest: Pete F.
Date of Stay: 05/02/12 Review Submitted: 05/09/12

Your home in the mountains was everything (and more) we could have hoped for….! It was so private – and quiet. A great gathering place for our all-female-cousin reunion. As we had the ‘girls’ come from all over the country, the close proximity to the airport – was ideal - not to mention the Biltmore and shopping in Asheville – all 30 minutes away – which was GREAT. THE BEDS…including the trundles – were all VERY comfortable. The BEST part of your entire home, however, was the porch on Creekside. We spent all our evenings on the porch – the large table and chairs accommodated all 11 of us. The grill proximity to the table was also special. Because we so enjoyed the porch – we never used the Jacuzzi or the fire pit. I have already recommended this property …truly felt like a home … property sounds sterile. The house(s) were clean – and well-equipped…– Pots of all sizes!. You thought of everything – including nightlights strategically placed throughout the rooms. Thank you for providing the venue for a wonderful weekend and family gathering place. Mary.

Owner response:Thank you so much for your absolutely wonderful review! You make it such a pleasure for us to share our cabins with such terrific folks like yourselves! Have a fantastic summer. Jan and Keith

Best Nights Sleep!

Date of Stay: 04/20/12 Review Submitted: 04/23/12

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful, peaceful home at Mountain High and Creekside with guests. The accommodations worked out perfectly! Everyone bragged about how comfortable their beds were and my dad said it was the best night’s sleep he has gotten in a long time. The screened in porch at Creekside was the favorite gathering spot of the whole clan and roasting marshmallows in the fire pit. The homes were everything the listing promised and much more. Everyone wants to come back!

Hey Jan, WE had a great time. Love the place! Property was in great shape. Very inviting cozy, clean. Did not feel like a rental! Love both cabins we referred to them as the cozy cabin and the kids cabin. Love the porch and the wonderful creek effect as well as the firepit. Enjoyed a hike and the hot tub and great time overall. Would definitely come back. Thanks for everything.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful place for all of us to spend our New years weekend. We really enjoyed it and just loved the house, cottage, and location. Two people in our group are battling cancer. At one point, we were not sure if either of us would make it due to the side effects of our treatments. However, many prayers were answered as we had a wonderful time and were not sick during the trip. God provided a great weekend in such a beautiful & peaceful place!

Wish We'd Seen Your Charming Place Before...

Date of Stay: 11/22/11 Review Submitted: 03/03/12

Yes...before we'd built our rustic log cabin in North Alabama, so I could have "borrowed" some of your clever and creative decorations and furnishings! In fact, I am going to sew curtains for my sunporch like the pullup(Roman shades)in your cabins. In spite of the weather, we enjoyed the quiet environment, the cozy fireplaces and comfortable rocking chairs. There's no way anyone could leave your property without regretting the end of a restful vacation. Thanks for making this possible. Robin

Thank you so much for the wonderful cottage you have put so much effort into creating! We had everything we needed and then some! We hope to come back again and create more great memories! Here are some things we LOVED about the property and Asheville: the HOT TUB!; the fireplace; Tupelo Honey Cafe; The Lobster Trap; the Biltmore Estate; The hiking trails at the old camp grounds with the stacked rocks (we staked a few ourselves); and the cozy beds! Oh I forgot the French Broad Chocolate Lounge...a MUST! Thanks again!

Relaxing Weekend

Guest: Pete F.
Date of Stay: 09/15/11 Review Submitted: 09/20/11

Jan and Keith, We just arrived back home from our weekend at your mountain home. It was absolutely relaxing. There were so many nice touches that we kept discovering over the few days that we spent there. I loved the plant infused plaster front entry and many other natural components that were worked into the décor. We had lots of good family time hanging out at Creek Side and Breakfasts at the main house watching the Humming Birds. In the end, we had too short a time like all good things. Thank you for sharing your home. It will always be remembered by our family. Pete.

Owner response:We are so glad your weekend was fun, relaxing, as well as memory making for your family. That makes us love what we do! Best Regards, Jan and Keith

You can go back!

Guest: Alan and Helen (Stuart, Florida)
Date of Stay: 07/31/11 Review Submitted: 09/01/11

We rented Jan and Keith’s lovely place last August and had a wonderful time. We were hesitant to rebook this year for fear our stay would not live up to last year’s memories. Well we did go back and it was even better the second time around. As soon as we opened the door to Mountain High, we felt at home. Mountain High and Creekside are both welcoming, well-stocked, and wonderfully cared for. The location (25 minutes from the heart of downtown Asheville and 15 minutes from the top of Mt. Pisgah) is ideal. The same set of family and friends that visited last year came back and hiked with us again this year. Last year we skipped the Biltmore (15 minutes away) because of the cost, but we found out this year that by booking a week ahead we could save a bundle, so we visited there too. We even managed to get a little work done, thanks to the wireless internet connection. Thanks Jan and Keith for letting us share your home.

Owner response:Hi Alan and Helen, Just as last year, it's been such a pleasure having you as our guests! Because of nice folks like yourselves, we so love being able to share Mountain High and Creekside! We appreciate your very wonderful review again! Warm Regards, Jan and Keith

Mountain High and Creekside Surpassed our Expectations!

Guest: Becky and David (Gainesville, FL)
Date of Stay: 07/15/11 Review Submitted: 08/05/11

We recently spent two weeks at Mountain High and had a wonderful stay. The location was perfect, so private and adjacent to the Pisgah National Forest. Hiking trails were just out the door. The Blue Ridge Parkway was just minutes away and Asheville was an easy drive. We found the house well stocked and well maintained. Since several members of our group needed to maintain connection with work, the free long distance and wireless were a bonus. We spent many days at local farmer's markets and cooking in the beautiful Creekside kitchen. This was the sixth vacation house we have rented in Western North Carolina and hands down the best! Many thanks to Jan and Keith, you were great to work with and the love and care you give this property made it like home (only better) for us. We hope to return next summer.

Owner response:Dear Becky, It is humbling to read your awesome comments about Mountain High and Creekside! Thank you again for being our guests, you are a delightful family and we look forward to your return in the future. Best Regards, Jan and Keith

Great vacation get away for our 2 families

We stayed at this home while vacationing in Ashville. We had 2 families both with 2 boys each staying here. We used the main house for sleeping and breakfast each morning. It slept 8 very well and the trundle beds worked great for the boys. We used the detached unit at Creekside for dinners and loved eating out on the screened in porch. The boys loved the creek and the fire pit where we spent many evenings. We were very busy while there visiting Sliding Rock, downtown Ashville, rafting the French Broad, and going to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. It was great coming back to the home each evening for dinner and to relax. Our 2 families had a wonderful vacation.

Memorial Day Weekend Family Reunion

Guest: Suman (Durham, NC)
Date of Stay: 05/27/11 Review Submitted: 05/31/11

Our family of 12 really enjoyed our vacation in Candler at Mountain View and Creekside. Both properties were clean with plenty of space for our large group. Creekside was a natural hangout spot with the pool table and screened in porch. We enjoyed 2 nights of grilling on the gas grill and staying up late at the bon fire pit. The proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and downtown Asheville made our day trips for hiking at Sam's Knob and enjoying local beers at Thirsty Monk easy. I would highly recommend the location for family get togethers or for anyone who wants to escape to a quiet spot while still being close enough to the main attractions in the area. Thank you Jan for your hospitality and sharing your home! We hope to be back again in the future!

Owner response:Hi Suman, Thank you so much for your lovely review! Keith and I are thrilled that we could share our favorite place on earth with you and your family. You are certainly welcome back anytime you are in the Asheville area! Best Regards, Jan

Renters Beware************

Guest: kendra (Kentuckky)
Date of Stay: 05/05/11 Review Submitted: 05/15/11

Can't go wrong with property!!! Very Lovely. Renters Beware*********** You may not get your deposit back. Anyone renting this property needs to do a walk through when they arrive if you see anything questionable call the owner immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We arrived at Mt Pisgah and the hot tub had a few minor things we noticed. 1 was the panel was loose on the side and you could not strap the side strap down. 2 the strap in front was separated at the seem and the bar that holds down the top and helps to remove was off to the side. I didn't think much about it as things can rip at seams easily. 5 days after leaving property I received an email saying my deposit will not be mailed back to me due to damage to strap on the hot tub and vinyl.. Normally my emails are answered the same day and very quickly. I have not received reply back from the email I sent explaining that we are not to blame for this damage.. In this case renters have no recourse since it is a private owner there is no way dispute damages owner already has the deposit and unfortunately can simple decline to answer calls or emails. Just wanted everyone to be aware of what could potentially happen to you. With that being said we did enjoy the property.

Owner response: In the 18 years we have been renting our wonderful mountain home, we have never had a problem quite like this! It makes us very sad not to return a $200 security deposit...it has happened only once before. We absolutely LOVE sharing our mountain property with vacationers! As it brings them joy it brings us such joy! They are the best people in the world who have taken such great care of our cabins just as if they were their own! They become our special friends!! We also have the very best help!! Because we live the Florida, we need folks who are able to be there at a moments notice! What a blessing to have the same people (our "mountain team"!) with us for many years! They are the salt of the earth!! Competent, skilled, big hearts and dependable! People who we can trust with our lives!! After a group of renters leave, they not only clean everything to the MAX, but also check out everything to OK both cabins so the $200 security deposit can be returned. This gives us the most accurate way of knowing if and when damage occurs and who is responsible for it. We feel so fortunate and grateful that each passing year finds our vacation rentals at Mountain High and Creekside more busy than the year before and many guests are coming and going on the same day. Our super consiencious gal who is in charge of hot tub maintenance empties, cleans, refills and adjusts needed chemicals between each group of renters. She also checks out the condition of the tub, cover, and all related issues. We rely on her report to let us know any damage that has happened. That brings us to this past weeks events. Unfortunately we did experience damage to the hot tub cover( hot tub and cover were brand new this past March) and had to take the necessary steps to replace it which was more than the security deposit. Yet we were not asking for anything more than that security deposit. She (the renter) asked us for pictures and a report to document the damage. We emailed back that we were in the process of obtaining documentation. Again, we are really sad and sorry for this unfortunate incident. However inspite of a very rare problem, we would not trade what we do for the world!! Keith and Jan

Jan, we certainly enjoyed our stay at Mountain High and Creekside. This was a time for my sister, my brother and his wife, and my husband and myself to spend a few days together (which is rare). The cottages are surrounded by beautiful green woods with loads of rhododendron and other flowering shrubs and a rushing creek. We loved the screened porch next to the creek. Both cottages are very well supplied with anything you could want. We also appreciated the use of a phone, with long distance calling to keep in touch with our families, since our cell phones didn’t get a signal there. It was a very relaxing few days. Thank you for your hospitality. Glenda & Jim Martin Jayne Hall Ray and Sandra Morris

Perfect mountain home away from home

Date of Stay: 04/09/11 Review Submitted: 04/17/11

This beautiful home is the perfect place to escape to. Very comfortable (the best away from home mattresses ever experienced), clean, well maintained and well supplied. Very convenient to our favorite spots: Blue Ridge Parkway (dinner at Pisgah Inn with breath taking views is only 20 minutes away), Cradle of Forestry & Max Patch Bald. Also close to groceries, gas station, etc. The house is perfectly situated among trees & gives a feeling of quiet solitude. The surrounding yard provides plenty of privacy and play area for kids. It boasts a lovely creek easily heard & seen from the screened in dinner porch. The bonfire area was a big hit. Gorgeous dogwood & redbud trees were in full bloom & the rhodies promise more flowers to come. The home itself is beautifully furnished with handmade pieces and shows pride of ownership. The kitchen is easy to work in & provides for every possible need. A pool table made my husband's visit that much nicer. Thank you for providing this kid & pet friendly home. Our family loved staying here to celebrate a milestone birthday. We could not have been happier with this location & will be happy to return.

Wonderful vacation spot

Date of Stay: 03/16/11 Review Submitted: 05/22/11

Dear Jan and Keith, Words cannot express our admiration for your wonderful spot in the mountains. Certainly it cannot be adequately described as a "cabin." The house that provided the primary living quarters was fabulous. It was large with plenty of bedrooms and baths. The decor was so homey with everything possible being provided. And the annex with another kitchen, bath and recreation space just filled the bill. Our weather was perfect, but had it been a rainey day in the mountains, it would have provided lots for the family to do without getting on each other's nerves. And then there was the front porch by the stream made our coffee taste even better. Your locations was perfect. It was driving distance from Asheville, Maggie Valley, Cherokee, and even a day trip over to Gatlinburg. You two are the geatest. Thanks for your warm personalities and doing all you did to make our visit perfect. Hampy

Owner response:Dear Hampy, Your lovely review and gracious words really overwhelmed us!! We so enjoyed having you and Barb as our guests and welcome you back again anytime in the future! Best Regards, Jan and Keith

Jan and Keith We so enjoyed your wonderful home. It is the perfect setup. It would be great for families with children. Creekside with the pool table was fun for our men, and most had not played in years. Having the kitchen area there would be such a plus for families. The location is good for the surrounding attractions. We went into Hendersonville and enjoyed that too. Of course our visit to the Biltmore was wonderful. We were a group of 4 couples that are classmates from the 60's. Three were from Metter, GA and the fourth from Athens, GA Thank You again for sharing your home, Ann Shaw

The pictures on line do not do your cabins justice at all. They are decorated with love and care and it shows. Every bed was soooo comforable. It was amazing how each bedroom was perfect for the family using it...like it was handmade for us. There were plenty of the coziest quilts and blankets for our cold visit... and everything you could need for cooking...even a crockpot. We got to experience a wonderful WHITE CHRISTMAS and that is just the reason we were up there... and to walk into the cabins and have it already decorated for Christmas with trees in both places, poinsettias, wreaths, stockings... we were thrilled. Was great having 2 refrigs and stoves and washers and dryers. The fireplaces kept us toasty warm and were wonderful when cold hands and feet came in from playing in all the snow. Even with about 12" of snow, it was easy to get back and forth from the cabins. We loved the firepit and used it every nite until the snow came. You are on a perfect hill for sledding down and it was used over and over. In your cabins we had family memories made that will be talked about for generations to come! What a trip. We can't wait to come back again at a time we can hike abound more. Thanks again. Mary Bailey

We Prayed for Snow!

Hello Jan and Keith, We had a wonderful time at your place!!! It is so beautiful and peaceful. We couldn't have been there at a more perfect time. The girls and I had been praying for snow for at least a week before we left on our vacation and it started snowing about an hour before we arrived. Our Lord is so good!!! It snowed for three days. It was so awesome. We went to the Biltmore for the candlelight Christmas, Dollywood, snow tubing at Laurel Ridge, and hiking the trails that were on your map. We will definitely be back and we will recommend Mountain High and Creekside to our friends. Thanks for all of your hospitality. Have a very Merry Christmas and God Bless you and your family, Vicki and Daniel

We saw Snow!

Hey Jan, We had a wonderful stay. There was a little bit of fall color left, and we actually saw snow on Saturday morning! Very exciting for us native Floridians. My parents enjoyed their first flight, and couldn’t believe how beautiful and comfortable Mountain High and Creekside are. My mom especially loved the “curtain rods” in Mountain High. Do you ever allow pets? We have a 7 year old, 35lb beagle-basset mix. If we were out, we’d leave her in the crate. We don’t have any plans for a trip at the moment, but I was just curious. I’m sure we’ll be back again, but maybe when it’s warmer. Thanks so much for allowing us once again to stay in your beautiful homes! Tammy :)

Wonderful

Wonderful! That is how I would describe our stay at Jan and Keith’s place in Candler, NC. We were there for four weeks and enjoyed all that Western North Carolina had to offer from their home’s perfect location. Three sets of family and friends visited during our stay and all want to come back. We rented the place sight unseen based on information posted on the Web. We were not disappointed. Mountain High (we called this the “sleeping house”) and Creekside (we called this the “eating house”) match the Web description exactly. This is unlike other places we had considered. Two weeks into our visit we drove around to see other rentals on our original list. None of them came close to their Web description and one was downright scary. The Candler location is ideal for hiking in the mountains. We climbed Mt. Pisgah, Graveyard Fields, Chimney Rock, Mt. Mitchell, and the local trail near the house. Candler also offers easy access to West Asheville where we enjoyed the art galleries and many bohemian restaurants. Asheville itself is close enough that we were there 4-5 times a week for fun shopping, great restaurants, LaZoom Trolley tour, brewery tastings, the drum circle on Friday nights, and Shindig on Saturday nights. We also discovered that the local restaurants, Kim and Donovan’s on route 151 and the Miami Restaurant on route 19, were worth a visit. When we decided to eat in, Food Lion offered all we could want in a grocery store. Back at work in Florida, we are surely missing Jan and Keith’s little piece of heaven. Alan and Helen

Playtime in the mountains

Jan - the accomodations were great! We spent breakfast time at Mountain High and dinners at Creekside. We played a lot of games in the evenings at Creekside. The pool table was a great addition to our down-time. Two of our group went horseback riding and had a great time. The guide was really great, and they enjoyed themselves...morning was definitely a good time to ride. I left some 10% of coupons at Creekside for rafting and Zip-lining through Wildwater Adventures. We did both and really enjoyed those things also. The Smoky Mtn Railroad was very scenic...way too long of a ride, but ok other than that. We also toured Biltmore. Pretty amazing place. We did the Rooftop Tour there, too, and it was well worth the extra cost of $17 per person. Everyone from 17 to 71 with our group enjoyed that. We really appreciated the Food Lion cards to help save some cash at the grocery store...thanks for that! It was nice to be able to eat in some days also. We enjoyed the gas grill and the fire pit several times. It was also wonderful to be able to bring our dog along. I would have worried about him the whole time we were away, but he was really good on the trip, and he LOVED the butterflies! Thanks, again, for the hospitality and sharing your home with us! Take care, Teri

Jan, We enjoyed our stay and hope to return in the future. We particularly liked having smores down by the creek and sitting in the porch at Creekside listening to it bubble by. Most days we took hikes off the Blue Ridge Parkway, which was very convenient to your property. Patty and Roger

Jan and Keith, This location was the perfect spot for 3 generations of family to stay! The guest house/game room porch was great especially for Grandpa being blind - was perfect with the sounds and smells of the creek and mountain air so close! Thank you for opening up your mountain retreat for us. Cindy

Dear Jan and Keith, I feel like I'm only repeating what all the other reviewers have said, but I need to tell you how much we all loved your property. Your description and photos are completely accurate. Our kids especially loved Creekside, of course, for the pool table and large TV. I loved it for the screened porch and large table that fit all 9 of us. We had everything we needed. Mountain High was quaint and cozy. My daughter loved having her own room with a TV. The kids loved seeing all the hummingbirds right out the window as we ate. We so appreciated your willingness to answer any questions and I loved the welcoming message on the answering machine when we arrived. We were also very appreciative of your understanding when we called to say that our key had fallen through a crack in the wooden porch. Someone came with a replacement key probably within an hour or two. At least we weren't stranded since we had the other house. The Pisgah Inn for dinner was delicious. We also found a Mexican place in Asheville called Salsa. It was the best Mexican food I'd ever had. i highly recommend Mountain High and Creekside to anyone wanting to visit the Asheville area. Be sure to go to the Biltmore, Chimney Rock, and do some ziplining and white water rafting. (We used WildWaters... they were fantastic). And catch some fireflies while you're there. We don't have them in FL! Tracy and family

Wedding Perfection

Date of Stay: 06/03/10 Review Submitted: 06/14/10

Dear Jan & Keith, Our 3-day stay at your beautiful rentals, where the bride's family gathered for a perfect wedding, was wonderful. From three states, most not all in one place for many years, a place and time that will always be a special piece of family history. Mountain High hosted wedding eve activities: the women inside with bride, ironing and steaming wedding gown and assembling wedding favors (family-crafted clay roses), the men outside tending the fire. Creekside was perfect for younger guests to gather separately and stay up later, etc. Both houses were complete, comfortable, and perfect for our needs. Thank you for letting others enjoy your beautiful, peaceful piece of the mountains. Sincerely, Sharon and Family.

Hey Jan, We had a wonderful time at your beautiful property. It's even more incredible in person. The water heater in Mountain High was promptly fixed and not a problem. My son and his girlfriend fell in love with Asheville, and hope to move there later this year. I'm definitely keeping your contact information. If they end up moving, you'll be hearing from us frequently. We loved being in the country, but not too far from the city. We stopped and bought fresh eggs from the house down the road. Once we figured out what ramps were, we stopped and bought some of them too. Smores at the fire pit under the stars was awesome. All the extra touches were wonderful...guitar, harmonica, games, books, movies, and easy to follow instructions. We especially enjoyed reading about all your renovations and enhancements to the property. It certainly shows that lots of love and care have been put into your home. Take care and thank you again, Tammy :)

What an awesome sight, traveling from Florida, and being greeted by the snow covered majestic mountains! We were awestruck by such beauty! Mountain High and Creekside are perfect. It is obvious that each place was furnished with loving and caring thoughts for all to share. So warm, comfortable and homey. Our days were filled with exploring Asheville, the Biltmore Estate, Fun Depot, and tubing at Moonshine Mountain. Our evenings...pool playing, movies, sharing stories, and lots of great cooking! We had an extraordinary week here - wonderful memories to share with others and to last us a lifetime. We'd love to return and experience Spring or summer here. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home, what a blessing you are to others. Happy New Year, Olga Barnes and family

Hi Jan, We did enjoy our stay in Asheville. Your cabin was very comfortable and clean. I've been meaning to email you sooner but I came home with an unwanted bug. I feel better today and was happy to hear from you. All in all it was very relaxing. The amenities were excellent and we were very surprised with all the linens and soaps and things. The wedding was beautiful and quite memorable. The kids(I still call them kids) were very happy with the internet availability. Marjorie

Jan and Keith, We had a wonderful time at your mountain home! What a surprise for the one sister on her birthday. All eight brother's and sister's were there to greet her as she pulled into the drive. The creek was fantastic and the firepit was a special place to roast marshmellows and hotdogs. We all gathered each evening in creekside for meals and a game of pool. Coming home from the mountain one evening two dogs followed us back and after contacting the owner, found out they were BEAR hunting dogs. You can't find that just anywhere! We hired a professional photographer to come up to the cabin on Saturday and found so many wonderful places to have family pictures taken. Although the creek was cold some could not resist having their picture taken IN the creek! Anything anyone could possibly want was available at your wonderful and cozy home. Thank you so much for allowing us to visit. Hopefully we will be returning soon. The Hester family

Dear Jan and Keith, We had an amazing stay at Mountain High and have priceless memories from our time there. Our boys loved the creek and playing in the yard. The house is beautiful... it was spotlessly clean and warmly decorated. The location was perfect for us...far enough out to be a "true" mountain vacation, but a short drive to everything that Asheville has to offer. Everything that we needed for our stay was available to us...what a well-appointed property! Jan and Keith were wonderful hosts. We have stayed in many vacation rentals over the past 17 years, but Mountain High is our favorite. I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone looking for a vacation rental in the North Carolina Mountains...this one has it all!

Hi, Jan, Our family had a WONDERFUL time at Mountain High and Creekside. It was a beautiful setting and there was something for each of us to enjoy. Our 4 and 3 year old "grands" really liked the creek and the campfire. My husband and son really enjoyed the pool table, and it was fun listening to them make up the rules as they played. We hiked along the trail off 151 but didn't get too far with the little ones. We really enjoyed the pictures showing the stages of the home's development. You've really worked hard to have a great place. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable. Linda
