Lovely red-tiled XVIIth century villa Le Cros is for the real lover of Provence. The descendant of the family, while still preserving its original soul, has just entirely refurbished it and redesigned its Provencal suspended garden of olive-orange-and jasmine-trees.
The villa laid out over three levels has sea-views from the two bedrooms and is definitely a much more pleasant experience than staying at a hotel in the Cannes crowd.
There are two bedrooms, each with two single beds that can be turned into king-size beds.
The first room has a large bathroom en suite with bath and hair-dryer; the second has a washbasin in a cupboard with hair-dryer.
A third spacious independent shower room with hydrotherapy massage shower and hair-dryer has just been built.
The drawing room has a king-size Italian sofa bed that can sleep two more.
The villa has all modern amenities including full air-conditioning, ADSL, Satellite TV, plasma screen, HD recorder.
The villa has been in the owner's family for over 3 centuries and has been added to in the course of centuries.
It is named Le Cros (the Hollow) and has given its name to the neighborhood.
The lady-owner of the villa is a descendant of the 140 Ligurian families who, in the 15th century, came from Italy at the invitation of the monks of the Iles de Lerins (off Cannes) to cultivate their orange-trees.
The genealogical tree on Place Bellevue still bears testimony to the adventure of the foundation of the village : the name of the owner is to be found on the orange tiles that line Place Bellevue.
The villa still retains its 17th century charm with - its 'tommettes' (red tiles) - its old stone fountain dated 1867 - its ancient stone 'lavoir' (old wash-place) - its old wine press where the owner's father, grand-father and great-grandfather used to 'walk' the grapes from their land barefoot - its terracotta boiler in which her great-aunts used to boil their linen with ashes to make it whiter - its rounded staircase 'confiturier' (marmalade cabinet) to keep the orange preserves they had made from the bitter 'Bigarade' oranges that grew (and still grow) in the garden - and its 'bousquetière' where the family kept wood for the fireplaces.
The garden is planted with jasmine, mimosa, orange, lemon, tangerine and olive trees (that make a natural parasol over the elegant garden furniture) not to mention a Muscat grape vine that yields delicious grapes.
Needless to say that the villa and its quaint garden offer you much more space than a hotel room.
What is more you can wander peacefully and safely in the main street, pedestrianised rue Saint-Sauveur, with all its Arts and Crafts shops, its fine art galleries and numerous cozy restaurants not to mention the Place Bellevue wherefrom you will admire the liners moored in the Bay of Cannes
You can buy anything you need from the small shops on Boulevard Carnot.
A pharmacy, the post-office and public library as well as an excellent baker's and butcher's are only 1 minute away.
If you do not feel like going out to expensive restaurants twice a day you may bring home some gourmet food and relax in the garden.
Buying local products, good bread, cheese and a bottle of wine is often a much better way of enjoying French cuisine and Provencal delicacies than dining out.
