Witness ZAMA (dawn in Mayan) from the verandah or step out to the powder sand beach. Either way you are in for a day (make that a week) in paradise.
ZAMNA is a concrete (stood solidly through 3 hurricanes!) beach house (NA = Mayan house), the impressive product of a local Mayan builder who is a master of aesthestic detail (notice missing square corners). The palapa roofed house is designed in two levels, each with two bedrooms, a kitchen and living area. Beachfronting each level is a large patio or verandah spotlighting the turquoise Carribean vista. Each level operates independently, but the house functions best as a whole offering privacy and community areas to those traveling as a group. Tall coconut palms shade the beach cocktail table and short stroll to waters edge.
Onsite you will be greeted by MariaLuisa, local healer and house manager and attended to by Jose, resident caretaker. They will allow you plenty of privacy, but will answer questions and requests. THe house and grounds are cleaned daily and discreetly protected at night.
ZAMNA is well served by solar energy and ecological systems to preserve the natural paradise. Paradise includes miles of wide sandy safe beach (no undertow). Beachcombing from ZAMNA will lead you past several good beachfront restaurants -(Salsa on Sundays!). Tractor like tracks in the sand are the sea turtles finding their nests overflown by squadrons of pelicans.

Why the Owner Chose Tulum
Beach vacationing near Akumal Mexico years ago, I never would have guessed that I would 'buy' a lot, design an off the grid house, and admire Mayan builders putting it all together. I guess I was bit by more than ants or mosquitos. Originally, I thought I would have a bed and breakfast and run art workshops when I retired. Now I just rent the whole house to appreciative clients when I'm not in residence with extended family and friends. It's been a remarkable journey.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa
I love waking up to the sun rising out of the Carribean. I love the caress of the sea breeze. I love walking miles along the wide sandy beach. I love learning the living Mayan culture and I love the living Mayan people. I love bobbing - body surfing in the impossibly blue Carribean. I love the staring meditation - at the waves, the palm shadows, the sand pattern, the kite boarders. I love Mexican food.....they cook from scratch so it is always good. I love the beach birds, the jungle birds, the wildlife. I love how my friends and family let down and really laugh when they are here.
Owner's Map of Tulum
I recently retired from teaching AP Art History, Drawing and Painting at Eaglecrest High School. That made my big birthday alot more fun. I now practice what I used to teach in my studio in the Art District in Denver. My casual interest in bird watching indulged by a little more free time has morphed into a serious birding obsession.
That's what fuels my travel now....Art and Birds.

An amazing house in a beautiful location!

This house was absolutely perfect for our family of four and two grandmothers. Due to the layout, each of us had our own space: a loft for the kids, a master for us, and a bed and bath for each of the grandmothers on their own floor. The view is fantastic, and the weather was perfect. The porch is absolutely incredible. My only suggestion is to bring your own pillows because they're pretty lumpy. Other than that, pure bliss!

This place is perfect, clean, comfortable, beautifully situated and very relaxing. Jose was the best, always attending to our needs. There were nine of us in total. We spent alot of time on the beach. We visited the Tulum and Coba ruins and several cenotes and shopped at local gift shops. I had a wonderful massage by Patricia, Maria's partner. We ate alot of fish tacos, yum. I will definately recommend this home and hope to return someday. Thank you Harriet.
Owner response:I'm so glad you enjoyed ZAMNA. It's a blessing to share this special spot. I'm looking forward to the coming months that bring sea turtles to the beach in front of the house to excavate nesting holes in which to lay their eggs. 60 days later lucky eyes see the tortuguitas erupt from the sand and scamper to the sea. Appreciating the natural beauty of the area.....I've programmed several birding guides cel numbers into the ZAMNA cel phone. Birdwatchers can see 60 species before breakfast near Muyil.

Dear Harriet, I realize now that you must be besieged by positive input from previous occupants of Zamna but all I can say is your house was wonderful. We all had the vacation of our lives primarily because we were all able to spend the week together in such a perfect environment. We spent a 2nd week in Akumal (with electricity, Sky TV and a pool) and it was great but we preferred your home over it. My 11 and 13 year old adopted grandkids will remember this trip for the rest of their lives. Our 2 year old probably will remember little but enjoyed every minute and we have it all on video tape so he can check it out down the road. Jose was wonderful as I know you are already well aware. What an asset you have in him and his family. The attention to detail and the quality of the finish work there surpassed most of the work I have seen elsewhere in Mexico. My question now is, what are your monthly rates?. We want to return.........

My wife and I were married in Tulum last march 2006, on the beach. We stayed at the Zamna house and it was perfect. No distractions, just long white sandy beaches. My parents, my brother and I stayed upstairs, my wife, her parents, and her sister stayed downstairs. It is a magical place. If you are looking for complete relaxation on the beach during the day, and great food at night, this is the place. Try the italian food down the beach, its the best. Small place, chef sits right down at your table and takes your order.

What a wonderful place to gather family from afar for a time of high adventure and quiet sharing. We were as busy and relaxed as we wanted to be. Jose was wonderful to us as was Claire.
