Owner Description
My father purchased the property in 1977 for an amazing $20,000. The lot was part of a larger parcel owned by the Butterworth family (they live in the house directly next door). It was divided up into three, one-acre parcels. I had just graduated from architectural school and was working in Washington DC when my father told me the exciting news. His first question was – “when we can have the floor plans ready?”
With the excitement of my first full house commission, I immediately started on the design. The building form was inspired by the pasting ships on Vineyard Sound and if you look at the front façade, you see that the roofs mimic a two mast sailboat. In fact, after the house was completed, local boaters have told me that they use the house as a landmark to navigate.
My father and I were the general contractors. For three years, I commuted from Washington DC almost every weekend to work on the house. We sub-contracted out the exterior shell, framing and finishes. For the interiors, we employed a retired carpenter who did a great job translating my sketches into realty. My father was an expert stone-mason (like most Italians). He learned the trade when he helped his father build a house back in the 1930s. You will see the results of his labor throughout the house.
There was a great sigh of relief upon completing the construction three years later. The design purposely provides waterviews from every room. The house is particularly interesting during the night when the weather is clear and the moon is full.
