Rio Grande River Gorge Casita
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This secluded Rio Grande Casita puts the Great Outdoors at your doorstep. The views from the property are unmatched. This traditional village borders both the Rio Grande and the southern Rocky Mountains. Centrally located to sites in Santa Fe, Taos, and southern Colorado, it is a quick, scenic 20 minute drive to Taos, an hour drive from 4 popular ski areas, and a key location for birders, rock climbers, kayakers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Archaeologists and geologists visit the area to explore cultural sites and rock formations. Artists set up easels along the riverbanks painting the rich colors and dramatic landscapes.
Skip the crowded condo scene and enjoy breathtaking scenery while grilling out on the patio or just kicking back on the screened veranda. Modern kitchen and spacious living area feature brick floors, kiva fireplace, and hand-crafted furniture. Perfect for a romantic getaway or for letting your children enjoy the freedom of natural surroundings.
Winter/Spring Conditions: Winter/Spring in Pilar can be the best time to visit. There are six nearby ski resorts with skiing and snow boarding. Travel time from the casita varies from 45 minutes to a little over an hour. The nearby Orilla Verde Recreation is quiet with returning bald eagles and other wildlife. Of course, summer can be exquisite. Cool nights give way to warm days and the quintessential azure skies of Northern New Mexico.
Taos hosts numerous seasonal festivals featuring regional art, food, and spirits.
Location Details: The casita is located at the end of a private road about 600 feet from the river. It is bordered by BLM land on two sides and is surrounded by mixed conifer trees that offer peace and privacy.
This is a rental by owner. We live next door, 200 feet away, and we are happy to assist visitors with any details regarding their trip to the Taos area.

Pictures do not do this house justice. It was better than described. The craftsmanship is beautiful. Property owners couldn't have been more helpful. It snowed while we were here and Bruce and Meg shoveled the walk for us. It is an easy drive to Taos for sight seeing and eating out. Would definitely stay here again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We enjoyed our stay here very much! We were in such a gorgeous location, overlooking the mountains. We took a leisurely ride to Taos one day along the Gorge and stopped at the Rio Grande Gorge bridge. Taos was just 25 miles away and the Ski Valley about 30 miles north of Taos. We enjoyed the casita and the skiing. Overall, very memorable and relaxing stay! Would definitely stay here again!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Don't be afraid to try something other than a hotel. Book this little home and you will never regret it. The views, the accomodations and the fully furnished casita will convince you this is the best choice. The Rio Grande is moments away with breathtaking views you would never get from a hotel window- or for the price. Bruce & Meg who are close if you need them didn't forget a thing when thinking of visitor's needs. We hope to make this an annual trip and hope to stay in this casita again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

There is a reason this casita gets such great reviews. The casita as well as the entire surrounding area is beautiful. Fantastic views. Bruce and Meg are the perfect hosts; friendly, helpful, available, yet never intrusive. They seem to have gone out of their way to stock the house in such a way that you could show up with your clothes, groceries and your toothbrush/toothpaste and still have everything you need.the kitchen is well stocked with utensils, dishes, condiments, spices, even foil and Saran wrap. We cooked inside one night and grilled out another night. Both were as easy as cooking at home. The wifi was fast and consistent. Our kids enjoyed various board games and legos that were provided. There is a selection of CDs and DVDs once you have finished enjoying the outdoors for the day. As others have mentioned, there is no AC, but we found no need for it. I cannot recommend to the owners a single thing that would have improved our stay. We are already planning to stay again next summer.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

This is a superb rental that we recommend without reservation to anyone looking for a casita in this area. Bruce and Meg are relaxed non-invasive hosts, who I'm sure would be responsive in the event of any problems (there were none). The casita is charming and beautifully situated above the gorge with great views. The furnishings are very comfortable and the sizeable kitchen has everything that anyone could possibly need. The casita is suitable for shorter or longer stays (we rented for 3 weeks) and easily accommodated friends who visited us for 4 nights. Recommended activities in the area include; whitewater rafting (we signed up with Big River rafting and found them pleasantly professional and the best in price); horseback riding (we went with--and recommend-- Cieneguilla stables which is just a quarter mile up the road to Taos from the Pilar turnoff; prices are very reasonable); be sure to drive to Taos junction bridge for a great but not diffcult 2 mile round trip walk up the Rio de Taos Pueblo tributary of the Rio Grande--it provides spectacular views and is one of the very best walks in the area. In summary, this was a great stay in a great area.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

The property and location couldn't be better. The building itself is very neat but the location is unbelievable. It is next to a state park, a few hundred yards up the mountain side from the Rio Grande river. There are dozens of hiking trails in the park. You are really in the wild, but at the same time the center of Taos is only about 20 minutes away and it's a very pretty drive. There is a place where you can go horseback riding on the other side of the highway and all of the rafting tours in the area seem to use this stretch of river (even small children can swim in it no problem). Of all the places we stayed in NM on our vacation, this was by far my favorite. The property is very well maintained and clear. There is no air conditioning, but you really don't need it. We were there in the middle of a heat wave (over 100, which is unusual) but at night it would cool off nicely (low 60s). If you open the windows at night and close them and draw the shades in the morning the house will stay comfortable all day even in 100 degree heat. It's a real adobe building. The long driveway to the property is a gravel road and it is a steep winding slope, so if you have a camper or a low-rider I imagine the driveway could pose a small problem, but we had no problem in our small regular car (a Prius). I highly recommend the property. It's even better than it looks in the pictures.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This was the perfect place for our Honeymoon! The Casita is lovely, stocked with virtually every thing we needed and total privacy. We could not recommend it more. There is so much to see and do in the area and we can't wait to be able to return. We would give it five stars!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

This is a very lovely, cozy casita with great views all around. The living room has a very comfortable couch with an adobe fireplace that warms up the room. The kitchen is well appointed with a large dining room table. The two bedrooms have very comfortable beds and we especially liked the skylight in the bathroom. A great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful New Mexico scenery. And, it is only about 20 min. from Taos. I highly recommend this place!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
