CABIN DESCRIPTION: At 3500 feet, the Ridgetop Retreat cabin sits at the top of a scenic ridge. There is an awesome view into the valley below and of the mountains on the other side of the valley. In our guest book, our renters regularly describe the view as "breathtaking". Even though the cabin is on a ridgetop, it is only a mile to the bottom of the mountain and the historic New River with its access to fishing, kayaking, tubing, and wading.

The ridgetop road on which our cabin is located dead ends just past our cabin, so the occasional car or hiker is there only to steal a jealous glimpse of the awesome mountain and valley view that characterizes this ridgetop. Eleven mountain peaks, including the highest peak in Ashe County, are visible from the deck and main living area.

The gorgeous view greets you as you enter the Ridgetop Retreat Cabin and look out the big picture windows, and as you relax on the deck furniture, perhaps enjoying the quiet of the mountains, a sunset over the mountain peaks, a relaxing beverage, or dinner with family or friends. After waking to the mountain view out the master bedroom window, enjoy your first cup of coffee and the sweet-smelling morning air on the scenic deck or on the sunny new rocking chair front porch.

If you journey down our mountain, you run right into an especially scenic part of the New River, where you can tube, kayak, fish, and even wade. The narrow paved road that runs along the river has been voted as one of the best bicycling routes in North Carolina - completely flat, but with scenic mountains, pastoral views, and the sun shimmering off the river and a cool mountain breeze to please your senses. Bicycle to nearby Todd and visit the historic General Store or rent kayaks, tubes, and bicycles at a nearby outfitter (in season). In the evening, sit around the cozy fireplace drinking hot chocolate or, in the summer months, roast marshmallows in our outdoor fire pit (wood provided).

Our resort community also includes a small lake with a quiet swimming beach and an accessible island in the lake with a gazebo picnic area. For golfers, the Mountain Aire and Boone Golf Club courses are only a few miles away. If you prefer hiking, there are several nice walks and hikes within the resort community, including one to a waterfall (Fleetwood Falls), and there are numerous hiking trails off the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway. The cabin is conveniently located within a short drive of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Boone, Blowing Rock, Todd, the Jeffersons, and several major ski resort areas.

The cabin is only a few years old and is decorated in tasteful mountain decor. Although we call it a cabin, it combines the best features of a private, cozy get-away and the modern conveniences to which we have become accustomed. The cabin features a complete kitchen with stove, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, coffeemaker, toaster, and all the other amenities of your kitchen at home. We provide all paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, kleenex), soap, shampoo, coffee filters, detergents, plastic wrap and aluminum foil, salt, pepper, basic spices, and, yes, even night lights.

The living area features satellite TV, VCR/DVD and CD players, high-speed internet, videotapes, books, games, and binoculars for getting close-up views of the trees, plants, and animals in our awesome view. The back deck has a gas grill, picnic table, rocking chairs, and a bench for taking in the wonderful view and mountain air. The front deck also has an eating table and chairs. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed and fluffy comforter (in season), and the loft has two sleeping areas, one with a queen-size bed and the other with a daybed. We provide all linens. There is a full bathroom downstairs and a half bathroom upstairs.

We use the cabin regularly ourselves and therefore are able to keep it meticulously maintained. We hope you decide to come for a visit!

P.S. We permit dogs on a case-by-case basis based on renters accepting responsibility for their dog's behavior AND for keeping their dog off the furniture and beds.

    • My husband, daughter, and I recently spent a week at the mountain chalet. It is such a quaint place with a beautiful view. We visited the nearby cities of West Jefferson, Boone, Blowing Rock, and North Wilkesboro. We toured Grandfather Mountain, the "blowing rock," hiked, went to Tweetsie Amusement Park, the outlet mall, an apple festival, and more! It was quite a full week, yet relaxing. The owners were very helpful and provided a lot of useful information. Thanks so much for everything!

    • We just returned from 2 weeks at your cozy, wonderful cabin and would like to say: the only reason one wouldn't enjoy their stay is if they want nightclubs, wild neighborhoods, and loud music. The songs of the birds, crickets and frogs were like sleeping pills to us. The fresh air with ever changing natural light on the wonderful mountain vistas were a joy to see. The kitchen is equipped with absolutely everything you could want IF you want to cook. It is convenient, quiet, and absolutely wonderful. You might want to put a bird book in your extensive book collection so your guests can look up the unbelievable number and species of birds that visit your bird feeder. I loved that so much that I ordered a birdfeeder just like it to see if I can attract even half as many birds at home. It is just wonderful...thanks again.

    • The cabin is adorable. We were 2 adults, a dog and a parrot. It's clean and well appointed -owner thought of everything. The ever changing mountain views are spectacular. The temperature was 5-11 degrees cooler than the bottom of the mountain. The location is fabulous. We lunched in Boone, hiked off the property and nearby Blue Ridge Parkway, toured an alpaca farm, visited the Cheese Factory in West Jefferson and kayaked the New River. I highly recommend this rental. The owner is very responsive and a pleasure to deal with.

    • An amazing view!!! Very cozy place to enjoy one of God's greatest creations..Cabin was very neat and had all that we needed. Would suggest that you add a jacuzzi to the deck..It would be great to sit in the jacuzzi and enjoy that view.

      Homeowner Response:
Thanks for your kind words about our cabin. We considered getting a jacuzzi/hot tub several years ago, but after researching it decided against it due to health reasons. Even with regular maintenance, bacteria apparently builds up inside non-accessible ducts and can lead to health issues. We decided to err on the side of the safety of our guests.

    • We had such a wonderful stay at Ridgetop Retreat. The view was spectacular and the sunsets lovely. The location is great too - close to Boone, but far enough away to enjoy the quiet. West Jefferson is nearby and a great little town with all that you need to make your stay at Ridgetop pleasurable. Carol & John Vero Beach, FL

    • Went in mid February 2008. Kids loved the double loft with one full bed and one day bed. Nicely decorated thruout and well kept. Nice big, end to end, terrace with tables chair and barbeque with pretty view. Main room and master bedroom have sliding glass doors to terrace. Gas fireplace was great. Cozy cabin for a family getaway. Owners are very friendly and trustworthy -- returned deposit promptly. Cabin had full kitchen appliances and condiments. Drive to Ski Beech was less than an hour. Appalachian Ski Mtn is closer and recommended. Lots of brochures for things to do. And books videos etc. Great cozy cabin.
