Capitol Hill - Close to Everything, Walk to the Mall
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
The location is perfect (in the heart of Capitol Hill's best street) for someone on an extended business trip and/or vacation who prefers a different environment vs. a hotel room, and who will treat our home as your own during the short-term stay. The house is located on a Historic St. which is quiet, safe, and within walking distance (blocks) to the famous Eastern Market, Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Senate, etc. Also within walking distance are shops, restaurants, grocery stores, two Metro stops, jazz clubs, coffee houses, dry cleaners, Shakespeare Theatre, and the famous National Mall where you can visit the Smithsonian museums for free which include the National Gallery of Art, Museum of Natural History, Air and Space museum, etc.
For those unfamiliar with the term carriage house, let me explain: At the turn of the century, most large Victorian homes had a separate small house in the back of the main house to store the carriages as well as horses. Today, as homes were modernized and renovated, the small houses were converted into living dwellings with a private alley entrance not unlike many apartments in Paris, London, (European cities). There are approximately five carriage houses located behind the main houses on our street. The cobblestone alley is well lit, very wide, short, and of course, very safe.
Our street is one of the safest streets in DC as well as the widest and most beautiful. The house is air conditioned, has hardwood floors on the second floor where the living room, entertainment room, master bedroom and bathroom as well as washer/dryer are located. Ceramic tile is on the first floor with a well stocked kitchen, separate dining room, and powder room. Other amenities include DVD Player, two TV's, Stereo, Cable, Wi-Fi, hair dryer, clocks, as well as linens and towels, etc.
The security deposit is due at or before check-in which is 2 PM. Check out time is 10 AM. Note: If checking-in or checking-out outside posted times an additional fee may apply. References required as well as an Application Reservation must be signed which includes the aforementioned terms.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Washington D.C. where we stayed at the Carriage House. We were there as "tourists" and spent as much time as our feet could handle walking around and visiting all of the famous sites. The Carriage House was ideally located, just a few blocks from the Eastern Market metro station, and 6 blocks from the Capitol Building giving us a great starting point to wander the mall or hop on the Metro for other destinations. The Carriage House itself is very comfortable and clean. It was such a treat after a long day of touring to return in the evening to such a welcoming and cozy nest.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

We spent five nights of comfort in this well-located, quiet, nicely appointed carriage house. We were able to walk nearly everywhere we wanted to visit, and to a vast variety of local restaurants. A modern kitchen, bookshelves filled with books (which we were far too busy to read!), a bath and a half (for efficient couple ablutions), and a most helpful, informed, and available owner. We'd choose to stay here again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car.

The carriage house is in a great location, spacious and comfortable. It is very clean and well maintained. Ken was a superb host, friendly and communicated very well. The entrance is at the back of the townhouse via the laneway. The pictures displayed accurately reflect the appearance and I would highly recommend this property as the place to stay in DC.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car.

Ken has a fine Carriage House just a few blocks from the Eastern Market and the Metro. He is a great landlord with much concern for the well-being of his tenants. The photos and listing are accurate; the apartment was clean and well maintained. I have recommended this place to friends and relatives. It's an ideal location to take it easy, hop onto the Metro and go to most of the Smithsonian Museums. Some very good taverns and restaurants are at the Eastern Market area. Five stars!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

The carriage house was delightful, the best place we have stayed in five years of multiple annual visits to DC. The house has two floors, with the dining room, large kitchen, and bathroom on the first, a huge living room and very large bedroom and master bath on the second. The house is attractive inside and is tastefully well-furnished and comfortable throughout--great king bed, nice couch, good chairs, all the kitchen utensils you could want. It's luxuriously large for a couple or adequate for three or four people. Surprisingly, parking on East Capitol, was not a problem. The building is on an alley, but it deadends, so there was no traffic noise, whatsoever--a pleasant change for Capitol Hill. It's also worth mentioning that the owner communicated well and met us on time as agreed upon. This is a truly special property. We'll try to book it again every time we visit DC.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, girls getaway.

My wife and I just finished our first trip to D.C. This property was also our first try of a VRBO property. We certainly hope our future selections work out as good as this carriage house. You couldn't ask for a better location to see the major sites of the American capital. At night, if you stand in the centre of the street in front of the house you can easily see the lit dome of the U.S. Capitol building. The property is located in an upscale family neigbourhood. The property is near good restaurants and stores so food and convenience items is never an issue. This property has all of the conveniences of home. It is fully stocked with everything you need to make your visit comfortable. The fully stocked kitchen provides everything you need to prepare breakfast, lunch or dinner, if you choose to stay in. We were surprised that Ken, the owner, ensured that the basics including coffee, sugar, spices, etc., were already in stock. Previous renters have left a variety of items for use by future renters. Ken was a great owner. The property was well cared for, clean and comfortable. He gave us a long list of suggested restaurants and stores to visit. We did eventually get to most of them. This property comes with wifi (for a daily fee), laundry equipment, espresso machine, flat panel TV and cable, a comfortable bed and everything else you will need to feel at home on your D.C. visit. I have no hesitations recommending this property and will use it again on a future trip to Washington.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, girls getaway.

My husband & I came to DC for me to run the MCM. We flew in on the Friday. Ken was awesome with communicating with us about his place and meeting with us. The one bedroom carriage house is set in the most quaint area of DC and so close to everything. Ken has the place set up to meet your smallest needs, such as coffee, sugar, spices, soap, washing machine detergent, etc. I was so impressed with his attention to details. Despite hunkering down on Monday because of Hurricane Sandy, the carriage house was comfortable and NEVER lost power. The unfortunate side of the Hurricane is that the federal gov't closed for 2 days as well as the Metro. Oh well, means we'll have to come back and stay here again!!! Just loved everything about the carriage house and the area of DC where it is located. Be sure to go to Eastern Market for all your grocery/food needs. So many restaurants within a 5 block walking distance. Can't say more than enough great things!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, girls getaway.

We spent several days in the carriage house, in August 2012. Well located for the Capitol, museums etc, the Shakespeare Library, and general access to airport and local public transport, Neighbourhood is pleasant and quiet, although laneway access may be offputting for some. (We had no problems with it.) Owner was especially accommodating of our late night arrival and early morning departure, and generous with advice and recommendations. Please note that the main picture is not of the actual accommodation. The rental property is - as is explained in the text - an independent unit accessed from a laneway behind the main house. Property was clean and tidy. Perhaps a tad too many notices around to make for a completely comfortable ambience - but maybe dictated by history and experience! Value for money was good.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1998
About the owner: Retired couple, long time residents of the area.
Why the Owner Chose Capitol Hill:
The property was purchased for the owners use and enjoyment. The Carriage House is the owners pied-à-terre and is being made avaliable for occasional use by renters through VRBO.
