I found this nice place on VRBO several months prior to staying there and had a wonderful time coordinating the stay with Ken. Ken was very easy to get a hold of during the planning process and has a wonderful product to offer. He is very helpful in suggesting wonderful local establishments to visit and the Carriage House is in a great location for the Eastern Market Metro Station. My trip to DC was a gift to my step-dad, and we successfully can check DC off the bucket list.

This is excellent accommodation in every sense - location, apartment facilities, ease of management. The district is attractive (pleasant roads, good shopping) and the proximity to the Capital very convenient. The owner was extremely helpful and responsive to queries. Altogether, a great pleasure.

We spent four nights in this very comfortable carriage house perfectly located in Capitol Hill. Located in an alley behind a beautiful residential street leading up to the Capitol, in a vibrant neighborhood just a couple blocks from the marvelous Eastern Market, wonderful restaurants, metro stop and other amenities. We also loved the walk to Smithsonian museums and the National Botanic Garden. Definitely would recommend this apartment, best for a single or couple who can negotiate the steep stairs leading to living room and bedroom. Kitchen generally well-equipped although our experience this time limited to simple breakfast when we managed to resist breakfast at Market Lunch or Jimmy Ts, both terrific! Ken was very accommodating and helpful, providing good recommendations which were greatly appreciated. We look forward to a future visit.

When I planned a trip to DC for me and my 22 year old daughter I wanted a place that was close to all the sights, safe and clean, and reasonably priced. Staying at the carriage house fulfilled all of the requirements with nothing lacking. There was plenty of room for both of us in the beautiful, spic-and-span, well-appointed home. And the location cannot be beat! We were able to walk everywhere, and even in the evenings we felt very safe walking from the Metro station, down 7th street to East Capitol. I would highly recommend this property and if I am visiting DC again I will plan my trip around the availability of this carriage house.

We have stayed here twice and can't imagine staying anywhere else when we come to DC. The owners are incredibly helpful and accommodating to reasonable requests. The house is quiet, well-stocked and so comfortable. We had two dinner parties in the week we were there. The beautiful Folger Shakespeare Library is two blocks away- we went to a play as well as to its exhibit. Don't miss Jimmy T's dive breakfast place, we sat next to a Senator. And every time you walk out the door you see the Capitol Rotunda so you always know where you are.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at the carriage house. Ken met us at the house and was an excellent host. It was very tidy, clean, well-maintained and just as the photos reflected. It was charming! An excellent location for us to go off on foot and explore the sights - and also very easy walk to metro station, even pulling a suitcase on wheels. (We caught the metro - blue line - to Reagan Airport on our departure.) Several restaurants in walking distance and the Eastern Market had great fresh food. We felt very much at home and at the end of our busy days was great to come back and put our feet up and relax in such a homely atmosphere.

We had a lovely four-day stay at this spacious, well appointed and convenient carriage house. The owner was extremely helpful in acquainting us with the area. This two story unit is in a quiet residential neighborhood, a few blocks from stores and restaurants. A short and easy walk to the Capitol and the National Art Galleries.

Different Experience from a Hotel

This is a great place to stay if you are sightseeing near the Capitol or just want to spend time together in an apartment setting. You feel safe in this neighborhood because there are several police patrolling because of the Capitol, Supreme Court, etc. Having a car is a little difficult because of the parking limitations, but getting a taxi is not possible without a walk to the Metro station which is too far to walk in the cold. Weekend parking is not a problem and after the first day you learn how to get around the two hour parking limitation during the day. If you are a first time visitor to Washington DC, I recommend you take the tour bus around the city. One of the stops is the Capitol and is within walking distance of the carriage house. It is a great way to get around to all the sightseeing places and easy to get back to the house. The carriage house is clean and nice and has all the comforts of home. Ken, the owner, is very helpful about telling you places to eat, etc. He has put together a book with great information for tourist and is very willing to answer any questions or help out to make your visit pleasant. The Eastern Market is only a few blocks away and within walking distance. There are great dining places and the market has a great selection of groceries. Downstairs is the kitchen, half bath, and eating area. Upstairs is the family room, bedroom, and full bath. As we all know, heat rises and if you are warm downstairs it is too hot upstairs. This really is not much of a problem though because we mostly stayed upstairs after making dinner. The heater works really well so remember to turn the heat down if you are planning on spending most of your time upstairs. I would not recommend staying here if you are handicapped and/or cannot climb stairs because the living area and bedroom are upstairs and the stairs are very narrow and steep. Thank you Ken for welcoming us to your carriage house and for letting us stay. We had a wonderful time in DC. It is a great city and so many things to see and do.

It has taken us far too long to review our delightful December 2011 stay at the Carriage House. We have rented at least two dozen apartments both in the US and Europe and were thrilled with Ken’s attention to detail of this well-appointed and well-situated apartment. Ken met us when we arrived and gave us all the information we needed for staying in the Carriage House as well as showing us a booklet full of local restaurants and shops. Because we visit Washington with a certain regularity, we are sure to be back.

This property was perfect for our Thanksgivingish visit: quiet, very clean, interesting/safe/charming neighborhood, close to everything we needed and very affordable! Eastern Market is just a few blocks away, we had a few tasty pizzas from Matchbox pizza but generally cooked at home after hectic days of exploring D.C.. This trip we roamed Rock Creek Park, Capitol Mall, visited the National Christmas tree and Occupy D.C. Owner was helpful and instructions for visitors were clearly displayed. We hope to stay here again when visiting our daughter & son-in-law. Also highly recommend a trip to Baltimore to the American Visionary Art Museum.

We stayed at the carriage house over Thanksgiving. We chose it primarily for the fantastic location, but it was perfect in every other way as well. Very comfortable, plenty of room. As others have said, the pictures are very accurate. We needed to cook some dishes to take for a Thanksgiving meal and the kitchen was well stocked with all of the cooking utensils that we needed. We come to DC fairly often to visit our daughter, and have tried various types of accommodations and this has been by far our favorite.

Ideally located behind The Capitol, clost to the subway and Eastern Market as well as tree lined streets in a beautiful residential area. We were met by the owners and provided with lots of helpful suggestions for enjoying our week in Washington. The apartment was not only extremely clean, comfortable and well equipped but also charming. We were able to easily walk the National Mall, dipping in and out of the Smithsonian museums and visiting all the monuments. We avoided shopping complexes and were able to eat locally or stock up at the local market and corner shops daily. We have had no hestiation recommending this lovely apartment to our friends already. Don't miss the Newseum or the new Martin Luther King Memorial.

Location location location ! The carriage house is so conveniently located for visiting Congress, Supreme Court, and the museums and monuments on the Mall. We were able to walk to so many places. It's also not far from a metro line, for those get out of town trips, and it's on the same metro line you would take to get from Reagan airport. There are also many nearby restaurants to choose from and a couple of corner markets to help you stock the kitchen. Our stay from October 20-25 2011 was great. We found the house to be cosy, comfortable, and very clean. Ken was there for check in, to explain anything and to answer any questions .He's got a notebook with additional tips and restaurant/shop recommendations, and also has a kitchen stocked with spices that can be used by us tenants should you choose to cook in. Everything on the website was accurately described. My friend from Melbourne, Australia was as happy with our stay as I was. I would definitely stay here again on any visits to D.C, and I'd recommend this to adults or families with older children Irene

This rental was absolutely perfect as a home base for exploring DC. We were there for the marathon, so it was great to be able to cook in the extremely well appointed kitchen. You're super close to eastern market and the subway and not far from all DC attractions. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. It's a great, safe neighborhood and a very nice carriage house. The only tough part was parking during the week so I would suggest exploring your options there beforehand (you can park on the street on weekends). I highly recommend this place and ken was great in communicating and helping us out while we were there. Five stars!!!

My husband and I spent a week in this comfortable home. Ken was a very attentive landlord and meet us at the home when we arrived. The listing description and pictures were very accurate. The property was clean and well maintained. The neighborhood is charming, filled with bakeries, deli shops, restaurants, and of course the wonderful Eastern Market just 2 blocks away. The Market on the weekend is a must see. The produce, art, pottery and jewelry were all a treat. With all of the wonderful dining options I did not cook, but we did do lots of take out to enjoy at home after a busy day of sightseeing. The metro was so convenient to access, just 4 safe blocks away. It is such a delightful difference to live within a neighborhood as opposed to a hotel while vacationing. It took less than a day to feel completely relaxed and at home within our space. We even attended a neighborhood church on Sunday. I would recommend the carriage house apt. to our friends and would stay there again while visiting DC.

Capitol Hill Carriage House

Super clean...and the owners have thought of every detail! Ken was pleasant and quick to reply to all questions from day 1 of our planning process. Having a bathroom on each floor was great! We cooked almost all nights as we were tired of eating out, but there are lots of restaurants close by & the metro stop is only about 4 blocks away. We never needed a car. There are steps going upstairs to the living room and bedrooms but the kitchen, dining room and 1 bath are on the 1st floor. We just left our big suitcase downstairs and it worked out well. Be sure to get good directions if you are driving as you need to find the alley in between the row houses and then go to the end on the right. The price was great and we MUCH preferred being here to being in a hotel for 5 nights.

We stayed at this property for 3 nights while visiting DC. Conveniently located to Eastern Market Metro and easily within walking distance of the mall. Shops and restaurants abound. Ken provides resources for finding all of these treasures. He greets you with a smile and tells you the best eats around. And of course -- he was correct. The 2 level is nicely appointed; lots of share stuff; kitchen has all one would need in terms of cooking utensils/appliances. Every amenity has been thought of --- right down to 2 umbrellas hanging on the coat rack. What a lifesaver!!! Oh --- the fold out couch/bed was very comfortable!!!

We stayed in this apartment for a week early in September 2011. We found the owner, Ken, to be a helpful, considerate, and courteous host. The property was very clean and well-appointed, and it matched the description provided on the website. The location is most convenient for visitors (such as us) because it is only a few blocks from the subway, and about a 15 minute stroll to the Capitol. It is located in a lane at the rear of a row of three-storey homes, and at first glance it is a bit unprepossessing. But that is only the external appearance, and inside it has all the amenities that one or two people would require. When we visit DC again we will certainly seek to stay there. It is excellent.

The carrage house was a comfortable clean place to stay for our week in Washington DC. The location and description were just as described. We had planned to use the full kitchen more but there were so many interesting restaurants to try we ate out most of the time. Our daughter slept on the hide-a bed up stairs and having the kitchen and dining on the lower level was great for our morning coffee. We walked a lot and the metro worked well for some excursions further out. When we come back someday this will be our first choice for places to stay.

I rented this carriage house for 6 days and it turned out to be a great place to stay. Ken, the owner, is extremely pleasant and provides some great restaurant recommendations. We tried several and he was 100% spot on. The apartment itself is an eay walk to shops, restaurants, the metro station, the US Capitol and the Supgreme Court. We ate all of our meals out, but if you're a cook, the Eastern Market has everything you need to cook fresh meals daily. On my next trip to Washington, whether for work or play, this carriage house will be my first choice for housing.

My daughter and I stayed in this lovely carriage house for a week and had a fabulous time, you can tell the owners really care and have thought of every detail to make your stay enjoyable. The kitchen has been completely remodeled with new appliances, and the whole unit is actually quite roomy. It is amazing close to everything, sights, restaurants, small markets as well as the Eastern Market, in a great neighborhood and close to the metro. There is so much to see in DC, we could have easily stayed another week, but what I will never forget is the Fourth of July fireworks on the National Mall, it was so inspiring and incredible to spend the Fourth with so many fellow Americans, everyone should be able to experience this at least once in a lifetime!

In June 2011 we stayed at The Coach House and found it an ideal location We were able to walk to Capitol Hill easily and also to Union Station. Locally the Eastern Market offered excellent restaurants, shopping, weekend end Street Market, train station and buses. The Coach House is well appointed and located in a very quiet neighbourhood. We can genuinely recommend the property for any visit to Washington DC.

Great location and iowner very helpful with suggestions. I lived 3 blocks away in the 1970's and sold a poem called "Dry Fly Fishing in Washinton DC" to the Washingtonian magazine for $25. You can take the Metro anywhere and also walk many places from here. Eastern Market has great food to buy if you want to grill in the yard. Good restaurants and bookstores, and the Folger and Library of Congress are 4 to 5 blocks away. are nearby. Take Eastern Market Metro one stop north to Potomac and tour Congressional Cemetery. There are many great historical graves there. Just like this nice carriage house: Location, Location, Location!

I wholeheartedly agree with all the previous positive reviews and comments. The owner was courteous, professional, and very helpful. The location was great, and the neighborhood was beautiful and felt safe. The house was clean, in great condition, and well-stocked with necessities as well as some thoughtful extras (umbrellas, shopping bags, extra toothbrushes, spices, maps, etc.) Thankfully, the air conditoner worked great. What makes this review different from most of the others is that there were four of us staying in the house instead of just two (2 adults, 1 15-year old, 1 9-year old). There was plenty of room for all of us and we never felt cramped. The queen size sofabed was comfortable. There was room for seven people to comfortably sit in the living room and the flat screen TV was great. It was nice having the extra half bath downstairs. The kitchen was large and very nice. The photos on this listing are accurate, but I felt the place was even nicer and more spacious than it looked on here. We stayed six nights and were all very comfortable and sad to leave. We would definitely stay here again, and I recommend it without hesitation.

My partner David and I loved our week in Washington, staying at the Carriage House. We phoned Ken on our way from New York, and he was at the Carriage house to greet us on our arrival. Ken gave us a tour of the house and offered us plenty of information on the area and where to eat etc. His best recommendation was B Smiths at Union Station. We loved the food here so much, we went back for more! The house was clean, cozy and lived up to its claims (and photos) here on vrbo. The location is quiet and The Capitol is within easy walking distance. We highly recommend Ken and The Carriage House to anyone coming to Washington

I was in DC for a week vacationing with my teenage son. Ken was very helpful with sight seeing information about DC as well as commute from the airport. He was waiting for us when we got there and patiently explained the locations of restaurants and grocery stores. The bed and the sofabed were very comfortable. The house was very clean and stocked with neccessaries. It is a couple blocks from the metro on beautiful tree lined street. If I am in DC again I will definately contact Ken. You cannot get better accomodations than this :-)

Cherry Blossom Blast

My daugther (15 years old) and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Carriage House for the 2011 Cherry Blossom Festival. We were lucky to have the blossoms peak during our visit, so that was a bonus! We loved the location of the Carriage House - so close to the fabulous weekend Eastern Market (great food, produce and artisans) and the Metro stop, plus within walking distance of the Capital, Supreme Court, Union Station and more. We took the subway to and from Reagan National Airport, which was a great benefit - easy and cheap. The house is located in a very safe area and we felt totally comfortable, even when walking home at midnight one evening after a night of enjoying a show at Ford's Theater. We enjoyed having wireless access during our stay and loved having the kitchen to prepare food from the local markets and shops. The owners were very helpful in all aspects of our trip and we hope to stay at their property on our next DC trip.

The condo was wonderful. Great location, extremely comfortable and after a long day of sight seeing, it was like coming "home". Condo was beautifully decorated. All and more than it was advertised. Ken went above and beyond in helping me find his apartment, as well as being patient and kind. The accomodations were just right...especially for the price. I can't imagine why anyone considers staying in an overpriced hotel in D.C. when you can have the comforts of home, the closness of the metro/bike rental, as well as feeling like you are part of the Eastern Market scene....not just a tourist/visitor. thanks again Ken! We had a fabulous family vacation over Christmas at the Capitol. And it was made that much better by staying in this great location. Easy access to the rail, three blocks from the Capitol and easy walking to Union Station. The best part was the neighborhood and shopping for dinner at the Eastern Market. The Carriage House is located about 5 blocks from the Eastern Market, an historic site with choice foods and a weekend market of vendors for art works, farm produce and quality crafts. It's an easy walk from the Carriage House to the National Mall where nearly all the major museums and galleries are located. The Metro is at the Eastern Market where a few choice cafes, coffee houses and taverns are handy for a stop after free or paid events at the Kennedy Center, which is on a direct Metro line. In short, this is an ideal location at a reasonable price for a visit in Washington. Ken Kimbrough is genuinely interested in his guests needs and comfort.

My husband and I stayed in the carriage house last November, for about three weeks. We live in the Pacific Northwest. We once lived in Washington DC, mid to the end of the 60's. This trip back was lovely and close to wonderful art,music,plays, history, parks, and on and on. I remembered the Eastern Mkt. I loved it then, and, staying in the carriage house, I could walk over and swoon at all the food. Staying at the carriage house was convenient to Eastern Mkt., the Smithsonian, and the subway. I love the subway...what a remarkable way to get around. I would love to return, sooner rather than later. I recommend the carriage house, it's friendly owners and the location.

My husband and I stayed at the coach house for a long week end and could not have been more pleased. The neighborhood is quiet and the house is secluded, yet just a walk from the metro, Union Station, and the monuments. Ken was very helpful with hints for traversing the neighborhood and the city and was very prompt in answering queries I had throughout the rental process. The coach house itself is warm and inviting. Everything was clean and well stocked with soaps, paper products, and kitchen supplies, which has not always been our experience with VRBO rentals. The location was ideal and I would certainly stay there again. A Holiday Inn king suite on The Hill is $355 a night. Why would anyone in their right mind do that when this is so superior?? For anyone who has lungs, this is the place to stay. The owners are meticulous about the smoke-free status of the house--and that is such a breath of fresh air! Location is perfect for travelers wishing to walk all the sites of DC.

We stayed at the carriage home from Oct 2 - 9th, found it to be a lovely home and enjoyed a warm reception from Ken upon arrival. It is in a very nice location, with metro near by, wonderful cafes and the Capitol building. Ken was very helpful before and during our stay with quick responses. I would stay there again for sure....especially as I did not get enough time at the local eateries and the Eastern Market. Thanks Ken.

The Carriage House exceeded our expectations. Wonderful location within walking distance to the Mall. A short walk to grocery stores and restaurants. Simply a wonderful neighborhood. Kenneth had more gadgets in the kitchen than I have. I think you could have prepared any thing you could imagine. He also gave us the basic cards for the metro so all we had to do is add the fare and saved us $10 at least. We walked almost everywhere and when it was too hot to walk we took the metro. I would sure recommend this apartment to any one for it is truly a wonderful value.

What A Great Place!

The Carriage House is perfect if you are looking for a great place to spend time while visiting DC. I couldn't believe how close walking to Metro and the Capitol was. Ken spent time with us upon arrival to give us wonderful tips on places to eat, visit etc. The kitchen was just as this website states: very well stocked and clean. The pictures of the Carriage House are spot on. We felt so comfortable in the neighborhood and spent quite a bit of time just walking the neighborhood admiring the yards and buildings. We really appreciated the Metro Smart Trip cards left for visitors to use. We don't have a Metro system where we live and we felt totally comfortable riding it. My favorite place close to home was Eastern Market. Great produce, meat, flowers and breakfast and lunch. The Farmer's Market on the weekend was unbelievable! I would recommend this rental to anyone visiting the area.

The carriage house was very clean and had everything, plus some, to make our stay extemely comfortable. The location and neighborhood are perfect. Walking distance to markets, subway, the Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, ... etc. Ken, the owner, was great to deal with. No hassels.

We completely enjoyed our stay at the Carriage House during our D.C. vacation. The Carriage House is located within walking distance from the Capitol if you enjoy walking or near the Metro if you prefer. The neighborhood is charming with two neighborhood stores within a couple of blocks. The house itself had everything we needed and more. We found it to be very comfortable and looked forward to returning "home" after a busy day visiting memorials and museums. Eastern Market (a short walk away) was a fun place to explore with great options for eating out or buying the ingredients for a great homemade meal. Kenneth and Juneanne were helpful with good suggestions for places to see and restaurants to eat at. We would definitely stay there again.

A gorgeous retreat on Capitol Hill

We spent two wonderful weeks in Washington where we already had lived from 1981 to 1983. Coming from Germany it was a tour of reminiscence for us with so many things to revisite and to experience these days. And whenever we returned to this wonderful apartment each day it made us feel so comfortable and relaxed. The large kitchen, the dining place, the living room and the bedroom left nothing unfulfilled. Everything to its perfection in a location where we had our first invitation to a halloween party 27 years ago - on Capitol Hill. Thanks also to Kenneth for the professional handling of the informations prior to moving in. In concordance with the other recent reviews we can strongly recommend the carriage house.

Just as advertised, this Carriage House was ideally located near Eastern Market, easily walkable to Union Station or Capitol Hill and environs. Ken is very helpful and provided a nice list of neighborhood spots to visit. There are plenty of local coffee shops, cafes, and many restaurants including French, Italian, Mexican, and Thai. An organic market is close by, too. On weekends there is a Farmer's Market and when we were there, there was a craft fair, too. The Carriage House is entered from an alley that runs behind the main houses on the block and at no time did we not feel safe walking around. We would definitely recommend these accommodations for a short or extended stay for those wanting more than just another hotel room. The home is very comfortable and well kept.

We completely agree with all the positive reviews - that is what made us choose the carriage house to begin with and we were not disappointed at all. It is definitely a great home base for anything you want to do whilst in DC. It is comfy, quiet and excellently maintained. The neighborhood is beautiful and we felt completely safe walking any time day or night. Ken was great about orienting us to the neighborhood. It is convenient, affordable and functional - not far from the Eastern Market Metro and all the shops and eateries in that area. We were happy to stay and very sorry to leave. In fact we did not realize how comfortable we were until our plans changed at the last minute and so that we ended up having to spend our last night in DC somewhere else. We will be back - and stay at the carriage house.

Clean, well-maintained, and great location! Put on your walking shoes and stroll to Eastern Market or any of the museums along the Mall. The carriage house is tucked away in an alley behind the main house, but its quiet, a very good neighborhood, and well-equipped for a short or extended stay. Thank you Ken for providing a terrific "home base" for our DC vacation. We'll be back again next year!

We had such a wonderful time in the Carriage House! Using the Metro, it's an easy walk to anywhere in the city. We used the kitchen every day, and it is truly well-stocked. It was a treat to come "home" after a day hoofing through museums and relax in the living room. Thanks, Ken, for such a wonderful stay!
