I was recently asked by a friend who will soon be traveling to Brazil with her family if I knew of a good and safe place to stay in Rio de Janeiro. I enthusiastically recommended this vacation rental where I stayed during a business trip in 2009 along with two other people. The apartment itself was airy and clean with a full kitchen, a washer-dryer (very convenient) and a dining area. Most memorable were the incredible ocean and mountain views, which are visible from every window. An added benefit of being in this apartment was the self-contained nature of the complex located in Morada Do Sol. As a woman traveling in Rio for the first time personal safety was a main concern however, with security guards located throughout as well as a 24 hour concierge I always felt like there was someone watching out for us. In addition, the complex also had a mini-market on site and a small outdoor café so basic food shopping was conveniently self-contained. I’ve recommended this apartment to my friends with children because not only is there a large, beautiful pool for residents there is also a separate children’s pool, playground and ball court. And, in the back of the complex a patch of wild forest with walking paths and tree monkey’s you can feed by hand. I loved my time in this apartment and would happily stay here again.
Recommended for:Girls getaway, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+.

The apartment is not as large as the photo depicts, the entire wall on the left is a mirror - the main living space is actually 10ft wide x 25 ft. and while the 3 bedrooms are spacious enough it was hard to imagine 6 people in the living space. An adequate space for a couple but it would be tight for a family. If you have small children the place would need "childproofing", there are lots of glass things around. Very clean, nice amenities- the washer and dryer are a plus and the kitchen is well furnished, however we did not cook since there are so many great places to eat out.The main swimming pool was always very crowded and noisy but the "kiddie" pool was mostly vacant and quiet. The concierge is really a security feature and the ones we had contact with had very limited English, though they understood "taxi". The Rio Sul mall and Rio Plaza are easy walking distance,safe, and are full of great places to shop and dine.For lunch I would recommend Bibi's, 2nd floor in the food court. Great fresh salads.Also, the gas station on the way to the mall has a nice little food mart with snacks, beer etc. It was recommended to not walk to the beach.The tunnel is longer than it looks, potentially dangerous. Taxis are not that cheap- the minimum fare from the apt to the beach was BRL$8 plus tip, to Ipanema was BRL$18. We spent at least USD$30 a day on cabs Renting a chair and umbrella at Copacabana is BRL$19 and Ipanema is BRL$9 so that makes up for the cab difference. The Ipanema area seemed to have a lot more close to the beach eateries.It also seemed less "run down" but that is just an impression. Beto, the next door neighbor, is a wealth of information on sightseeing, dining and is also a tour guide,he and his roommate Luis Carlos will greet you upon arrival and let you into the apartment. If you are there to see the sights of Rio this is a great place, if you just want beach time, stay closer to the beach.
