Secluded bliss, convenient to everything!
Secluded bliss, convenient to everything!
Before extolling the virtues of this wonderful house/cottage, Betsy and John (their broker) are wonderful to deal with and added to the joy of this Vineyard experience. Talk to John about how to work the ferry schedule if you are bringing a car and not getting the time slot you want (tip #1, book way in advance!). The house is lovely, charming, welcoming, and has a brilliant combination of convenient location, seclusion, and great views of the Lagoon Pond (even if from a bit of a distance). The kayaks were great to have available to use, for pleasure paddles, exercise, and fishing (all of which I enjoyed with great success). The kitchen is large and well stocked (other than dull knives) with most all that would be needed. There is a large washer and dryer. The cross breeze in the well-shaded house, makes up for no air conditioning in all but the worst of heat. We were there during a heat wave the first two days of our stay and if the temp gets over the high 80s (rare for the Vineyard) it can be a bit uncomfortable. The screens are wood-framed in wood-framed windows, so expect to have some bugs find their way in if lights are on at night. The wood-burning fireplace is a nice touch on cooler nights. The outdoor shower is nice, and there are plenty of beds. Remember to bring linens and towels. There aren't any "real" televisions. The wi-fi has good download speed. Nice patio, with table/chairs for four. Lagoon Pond's shallow depth makes it great striper fishing early/late in the season but in mid summer it gets too warm and they are out in the deeper water. The deepest waters in the entire bay/pond are at the end where this house and it's access to the private beach is, so even fishing from shore can work. Freshwater ponds on the island go ignored by most everyone, and Upper Lagoon Pond was great for pulling the kayak across the dividing road and indulging in a good largemouth bass take. Another good island freshwater spot is Duarte's pond off Lambert's Cove Road - lots of northern pike, some with good size, and no Massachusetts size minimum (I hope!). Beware the poison ivy, there are some vines of it creeping up a tree or two, but only if you step into the trees off the yard. A sports car would be a bad choice for accessing this home, as the road in is dirt/gravel and has some ruts and dips that are definitely best in an SUV or at least something with a modest amount of ground clearance, though 4WD isn't required by any means.
