Location: Muskoka, Ontario, Canada (2.5 hours north of Toronto; 20 minutes from Bracebridge)

Accommodations:  4 Building Cottage Compound, 11 Bedrooms, 4 Baths (Sleeps 16-20)

THE BOATHOUSE, as featured in Judy Ross! The Boathouse Book, is an exclusive Muskoka landmark property. Completely private, it is situated on the pristine Lake of Bays, just off of Old Highway 117. It is two and a half hours north of Toronto, four miles west of Dorset, and, for golf lovers, directly across from internationally renowned Bigwin Inn Golf and Country Club. It is ten minutes from the Lake of Bays Sailing and Tennis Club and ten to thirty minutes to towns, cinemas, shopping and restaurants. It is about one hour south of Algonquin Park.

This old Muskoka family compound, built in 1929, is in a completely natural setting. Spectacular sunsets, all day swimming, fishing, and relaxing on the dock are just some of the enticements that will lend to a wonderful and restorative holiday. Wake up to lapping waves and the call of the loon and paddle at night under a sky lit only by the stars.

Whether you're seeking a week away with your family and friends or looking for a place to write the great Canadian novel, the Boathouse provides enough space for both the highly social or private. Sip on a Chardonnay, swing on a hammock and watch a storm come over the lake from the shelter of the boathouse balcony. Play backgammon, cards, gather raspberries, chop wood, sleep in 'till noon, or run 10k down beautiful north Ontario roads; then relax in a wicker chair from the 1920s. From sun up to sun down, share good quality time without urban interruptions (no TVs, but dial-up internet is available). You may spot a deer or rabbit and you can count on families of ducks swimming by.

The PROPERTY consists of two large separate buildings: the COTTAGE and the BOATHOUSE, as well as a GARAGE SUITE and small LAKE-SIDE CABIN. A large front lawn surrounded by a garden, forest and exposed Canadian Shield mark the way to the cottage. From the main cottage, a flight of stairs takes you down to the boathouse and several hundred feet of private waterfront. Designed by a Captain, the buildings are made with black cedar shakes, white trim exteriors and imported Douglas Fir for the interiors. There is a nautical theme throughout with whimsical additions such as a tiled compass on the floor, port and starboard painted doors, and a sprawling dock shaped like the bow of a boat.

The BOATHOUSE is surrounded on all sides by water, with stairs and ramps connecting the mainland and building. Upstairs, there are four bedrooms, one bathroom with a claw-foot tub, a small kitchen, a grand living room with a huge cathedral ceiling and gas fireplace surrounded by windows facing west, north and east. Walk out to a balcony for spectacular views of the lake and sunsets.

Downstairs there are docks on all three sides, with a large interior boat slip (motor boat not included), a canoe, and 30 feet away, a floating dock. The main dock has a slide, plenty of portable dock chairs and umbrellas for respite from the blazing sun. The swimming areas, with sandy bottom, range from 4.5 feet to 12 feet deep. On the shady side, there's a "sandy slip" for little children to make mud pies and splash around in.

MAIN COTTAGE: Enter via a circular driveway with parking for about eight vehicles. The main cottage is flanked by an original stone patio with arbor and garden. Inside, a comfortable open concept living/dining room with skylights, traditional granite fireplace will welcome you. The large country kitchen with working wood stove, electric stove, fridges, sink, etc., lead to a back screened in porch that provides another sitting area. There are four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a deck overlooking the lake and the boathouse below. Perfect for barbecues or cocktail hour.

GARAGE SUITE: Near the main cottage, this suite is ideal for a small family or couple. It has a powder room, sitting area with cots, and adjoining bedroom.

SMALL LAKESIDE CABIN: The ultimate cozy one-room getaway in the woods.
