Playa de Papaya is an oceanfront home on the Family Island of Eleuthera, Bahamas. It is located on the Western side on a three acre lot in a private development. Kayaks and small motor boats are available for rent. Lobsters, crabs, and fish can all be caught from your doorstep. There is the village of Tarpum Bay ten miles away where the commercial fishermen bring their catch every day, weather permitting.
Eleuthera has some of the most spectacular beaches, and, in fact, the best Beach in the Bahamas, as rated by the Bahamians, is on the South end at the lighthouse there. It is also the first of the truly tropical Bahaman Islands, with a full array of tropical fruits. Mangos to pineapples to papaya to guava, etc.
And you are totally safe anywhere at any time.

A nice place to relax

For my family and I it was our first trip to Eleuthera, but it won't be our last. This property is a good value for the money. It is not "fancy" by any stretch, but it is a good basic home, and you can't beat the sunset, or the view from the deck. Our goal for the trip was to get away, relax, and explore. Eleuthera is all about getting away, relaxing and exploring. For those purposes, this home is in almost the ideal location, about midway on the island. One of the great highlites, and quite unexpected (but very much appreciated), was the home's caretaker. I am a pilot and flew my own plane to the island, the homes caretaker met us at the Governors Harbour airport as promised, took us to the house, rented us a car, and pointed out some of the "places to go," such as restaurants, and shops. He also answered our questions and made himself available for help during our stay. On our departure, he took us back to the airport, and even helped track down the fuel truck driver who took off on lunch with the keys to the truck needed to fuel our airplane. He stuck around until he was satisfied that we had everything in order to fly off. Within an hours drive you can get to just about anywhere on the island, from top to bottom. We took a day trip north to the Glass Window Bridge and north Eleuthera. and spent the rest of the time around Governors Harbor and Tarpum Bay. Ten Bay Beach is a short, short drive from this property, and is one of the most spectacular beaches anywhere. Our 4 year old son had to be dragged away from there on several occasions. The water is shallow and warm, perfect for children. Tarpum Bay has fishing boats that come in daily with a fresh catch. A couple of nights we just cooked fresh fish in the kitchen and watched the sun set. The Sunset Inn is a good restaurant with local flare in Governors harbor, but you have to try Mate and Jenny's in Palmetto Point, outstanding pizza that no stateside chain can hold a candle to. Never a wait for seating at any restaurant around this island. For Pilots: Governors Harbor is a good airport, with an almost constant crosswind, and a long runway. A 253nm leg from Ft. Pierce makes it an easy flight out, very scenic. on 3/24/2011 the AvGas at Governor's harbor was $6.10 (auto gas was $5.60 on the island). This would be a great place for a pilot to bring a family on vacation. See AOPA website for aerodrome particulars.
