Akumal is only one hour south of Cancun, but it feels like a world away. Very low key in every way, one feels like Akumal was made just for them and a few other people. Although Akumal is thriving with fabulous diving, snorkeling, shopping and eating, and has incredible white beaches, it does not have the hustle and urgency of Cancun. Another interesting fact is that the sand never gets hot.
Our condominium is very special to us. We have owned it for ten years but we have not rented until 2008. We have had many wonderful evenings sitting on our patio watching the moon rise and listening to the waves breaking just below us. I mention the moon because it is honestly spectacular from our balcony in the evenings. You feel as though you could almost reach out and touch it.
I do not have many photos posted, but I will add more soon. We hope you might imagine what the entire apartment looks like by my descriptions and the photos that I do have posted here.
The kitchen is large and open with new appliances. It opens onto the dining area and living area which makes for fun evenings if one decides to stay in for the evening. We can provide for someone to come and cook a scrumptious meal if you prefer.
The living room is lovely. I have antiques scattered all through the apartment and my favorite piece is the coffee table in the living room. Don't worry, the antiques are not fragile. Just feel at home. The covers on the living room chairs are from Guatemala and the wall hanging is Indian.
The den is cozy with a very comfortable sofa for watching DVDs. Four people can sit comfortably in here.
There are two large bedrooms, each with king size beds. The mattresses and sheets are good quality. There is a mural on the guest room wall. The walls are yellow and soft yellow. The full bath for this room is just outside the door and is blue tile. The walls are covered with an under water scene and parrots. This room has an ample closet and shelves. The Master bedroom is a lighter shade of bluish green. There is an armoire with hanging space and drawers. It has a full bath within and its walls are blue with a giant sea turtle painted on the back wall. It’s really beautiful.
Words that may describe the feeling in our apartment are open, spacious, warm, inviting, interesting, charming, beautiful and relaxing. Our ceilings are 9 and 10 feet, the tallest in the building, and we are on the second floor overlooking the ocean and the infinity pool. There is no elevator in the building.
We are only a ten minute walk from the "center" of Akumal. There are two small grocery stores, an internet room that is very reasonable, a few shops and a laundry. There are also three very good restaurants here in the center. You can access Akumal beach from here. It's only about one hundred yards from the center. The snorkeling off this beach is really good.
We have two diving businesses right there in Akumal. If you want to dive or snorkel, I can arrange an introduction to the owner so you will be well looked after.
Akumal has many wonderful restaurants and several are within walking distance from the apartment. Shopping is very good in Tulum which is only 15 minutes south, and in Playa del Carmen which is only 22 minutes north. Sightseeing is endless. You can take day trips to Tulum or Coba, or you can stay overnight at Chitze Itza or Merida. We recommend them all. There is an endless list of possible activities for you to enjoy in and around Akumal and all through the Mayan Riviera. There are PGA golf courses and world class diving spots. The fresh water cenotes are just beautiful and very refreshing. I have snorkeled many with our children. I prefer to have a guide direct us when we go the cenotes. I love to walk the beach from in front of our apartment and then to the right. It is not completely sandy. It is covered with thousands of pieces of washed-up coral and small shells. I collect the most striking pieces of coral that I find. I have so many now, I can be very choosy. I will sit for hours there and just commune with the sea and nature. I am usually totally alone and for me, there is no other place where I feel so at one with the world.
You will find information for all of Akumal and its surrounding wonders in the apartment. Roger, our manager, will be happy to assist you with anything that he possibly can. There is a man on duty from 6:00 A.M. at Mi Casa Del Mar.
We invite you to share out little paradise with us. Come prepared to let all of your tensions go and to have a week or two of sheer bliss. |
