E Komo Mai means "Welcome" in the Hawaiian language and I would like to welcome you to Kokokahi Place. The name means "of one blood" and the area is associated with the multicultural camp (now the Kokokahi YWCA) originally intended to bring children and families out of the city to play together and learn from one another in order to promote ethnic and cultural unity. That early 20th century camp has been replaced by a community that strives to maintain those old values of warmth, friendship, and neighborliness.
I have lived in this neighborhood for 30 years and have seen my large family dwindle as the children have grown and moved away. My downstairs is now a separate apartment, tucked away below the main house with its own entrance, convenient street parking and a lovely garden area. There are 2 bedrooms and a cozy sitting room, a kitchen with all the vacation cook would need, and a full bathroom. There is plenty of storage area, a view of the garden, and a cool breeze off the bay.
At the top of Kokokahi Place is the last remnant of the old camp, a trail up to the ridgeline. We call it Friendship Gardens and community volunteers maintain the trail. Lush green vistas are everywhere and from the ridgeline, a panoramic view of Kaneohe Bay, a kaleidoscope of blues and greens.
Beaches are also nearby and convenient. Kailua Beach (makes Conde Naste Magazine’s top ten most beautiful beaches in the world list, year after year) and elegant and exclusive Lanikai Beach are within a few minutes drive or bike ride. Kailua town is a charming beach community with all the amenities.
