NOTE - WORLD CUP 2014 AND OLYMPICS 2016 ARE RENTED.
The villa is one of the most desirable and innovative rentals in the center of Rio de Janeiro. Situated on a secure gated street. The property maintains the look, feel and elegance of an old mansion while featuring all the modern comforts of new construction. Complimenting the superb quest accommodations is an onsite (non live-in) professionally managed staff to see to all of your needs, prepare meals and help plan any special events. Our goal is to create a high spirited and fun spot for guests to stay while working or visiting in Rio.The Villa is the design inspiration of one owner - Mike a NYC professional prominently featured in the New York Times Home section. The other owner, Adan, is a native of Mexico City and sees to the daily running of the property. The villa is continually updated and enhanced to provide outstanding comfort, convenience and luxury to our guests and recently served as the set for a new Brazilian movie. We hosted another film crew February 2013 and the villa features in this new adventure movie to be released Summer 2014. We specialize in providing not only an outstanding venue, catering services and planning for events ranging from business meetings to weddings.
Basically the villa is organized on 4 levels around a central atrium. All rooms open to this vaulted space via balconies, gardens, or a glass roof which electronically opens to the night sky and marvelous moon views.
Level one is a grand stone entrance foyer off the little street with entrance doors from a former old Gloria mansion. A great modern kitchen contains every possible culinary gadget, huge island with bar stools, complete business center, and enough antique porcelain to serve 100. Off the kitchen is the new decorated atrium (morning room) and a grand dining room. The atrium fireplace and over mirror is undergoing completion by the artist who completed faux painting in the restored Teatro Municipal Opera house. The ceiling opens electronically and the second floor balcony gives way to 3 bedroom suites - all with sitting areas and marble deluxe baths with jacuzzi. The dining room is great for a family having breakfast or a sit down for 24. Off these rooms is the wood paneled library with TV/Cinema area and our very special antique Titanic model which the house staff presented this July to the owner.
There is a small stone powder room off the back stone stairway. All of the major public floor rooms have fireplaces and and make for a great family space. At Christmas - the 15 foot Christmas tree is decorated by the children of the villa staff and we have our annual holiday party and open house.
The second floor suites open by three pairs of antique french doors or stained glass windows to the atrium. Each room makes for a great private sleeping and entertaining space as sofas and easy chairs make it quite comfy. Since the villa is occupied most of the year - these 3 suites are continually in the process of being re invented.
The third floor is accessed by a stone stairway (with our little Budda in the corner) and panels of native birds and stained glass and a collection of both naif art and the owners original interior sketches for the house on the walls.
Once you open the door to the third and fourth floor levels - you see the great pool with its lion fountain,
a small sitting area with our bird menagerie in cages and the all local birds drinking out of the feeders. Our roof seems to be the greenest spot in the neighborhood and attracts lots of birds and butterflies. The garden is ALWAYS a work in process as the plantings change continually. We try to keep it in flower year around with hanging planters, placas of bromiliads and orchids. The barbecue is there and the staff lights the gas lanterns at sunset
Off the first part of the garden is a trellised walkway of local honeysuckle and some fresh fruit trees as well as a little herb garden. There are three small cabanas off of this walkway which are kind of like 18th century wood ship cabins. They share a bath with shower. They have desks with plenty of storage, hundreds of books, and are comfy and cool little spots - full of character. The cabanas can sleep 2 or 3. At the end of the garden walk is a separate building which houses the Bali House -a separate structure with two floors - a king size loft above and huge living room below which sleeps 4 on the banquette single beds or the banquettes can be combined into a king. This house has a separate bath and shower with chicken coop type windows which look thru the glass roof all the way to the first floor.
The villa is available as a rental with only one maid to change linens and make beds for guests who want total privacy. On the other hand - the villa has a huge staff for the family or group who wants and needs lots of attention. The daily rental fee depends on the services guests need ( basically price changes when the group is a huge number of guests) and is priced very well as compared to even a three star hotel. We aim to top the service offered anywhere else in our city. We try to make guests feel comfortable from answering their first inquiries to saying goodbye and putting them in a car to return home. We can offer continental or full breakfasts, lunch, snacks, barbecues, and full sit down or buffet dinners. We are quite used to corporate, business, diplomatic, and family parties. We know the best purveyors for buying fresh ingredients, fine meats, great fish, etc. It is a fun spot and we love to throw a party for you.
We are in the process of developing an ala carte menu which will be published on our website the first week of April 2013. It took a few years of learning what guests really want from a house rental to have a feel for how to do this. Now that prices in Rio de Janeiro have become in the league of New York City, Tokyo, or London - we feel it essential that guests have some reasonably priced options for meals. It also seems like guests who have all the intention of eating out every night - change their plans once they get settled into the villa. So we have become quite deft at putting meals together without a lot of notice. We have two lovely street fairs each week with butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, with dozens of stalls and like to take our guests their to choose whats will be on the table that night.
Adan, the owner, has a staff of drivers, tour guides, packaged tour operators, and can help with detailed planning for your trip - from airport pick up until you depart (and even ship those things your forgot back home !!) Guests have the advantage of organizing their schedule when they book or meeting with Adan when they are here to buy tours (although prices are 15% lower when purchased in advance of arrival)
Mike handles all the email requests and helps guests who do not know the city and country (or south America) on how to arrange their time based on their interests. We are affiliated with a great Rio travel agency who assists with flights, cruises, etc.
One of the Villa craftsmen is a jazz musician and knows the RIo night life scene. Another consultant is a set designer for Brazilian movies and knows what is hot in town at the moment.
IT has been a busy past three months with a total redo of the villa + movie shoots + a lot of big events BUT we will have a complete on-line villa manual, and menus. The villa is closed for two weeks in April as we are redoing all of our wood floors and wood paneled rooms as well as installing new wallpapers and lighting in many areas.
BEFORE YOU MAKE AN INQUIRY-
1. we are totally rented for all of the WORLD CUP PERIOD - w We are also 100% rented for OLYMPICS 2016.
2. we can not offer rentals less than 5 days for large groups - it is just too time consuming to do a changeover after 21 guests have been with us for a short period. There are no short term stays for large groups at regular rental fees, You can stay for three nights BUT WE WILL CHARGE MORE PER DAY FOR THOSE RENTALS.
We can offer a short term rental at a higher fee that reflects our increased costs.
3. although we can house up to 21 - there is only room for 7 OR 8 couples in total privacy. 23 is the maximum but 14 to 16 more ideal unless the group includes children and one uses sofas in the suites or bunk beds.
4. we can offer for the very large group the villa + our other penthouse also advertised on homeaway.com + neighboring pousada and hostels We have arranged stays for a group as large as 55.
5. rental rates VARY according to the number of guests and services requested. We are indeed an economical alternative for a large groups and offer features not easily available in most apartments or villa rentals.

We do not rent to any group without questions as we wish to make sure our staff, our villa, and our neighborhood are respected. Perfect Villa for our Rio Wedding
Perfect Villa for our Rio Wedding

We rented the Villa from May 26 to June 5, 2011, for our wedding. We had 50 guests from the United States coming to Rio and we rented several properties. This property is an exceptional property and provides the best comfort in my opinion. In comparison, our Honeymoon night was spent in one of the penthouse suites at the Copacabana Palace ($R 7,200 per night), and the only difference between the Copacabana Palace and the Villa is the service is far superior at the Villa. I contacted the owner via email and was able to meet with him in person at his office in New York. This was the first great experience with this property. The owner is a very gregarious, cheerful, and genuine person. He explained the property; showed us pictures & floorplans, and offered to help with any other needs. The Villa is tucked away on a private dead-end street. The street is gated off and is essentially free of any traffic. The Villa is the standout property on this little street and is elegantly lit by a single gas-fired lamp. The Villa is about three blocks from Post 3 on Copacabana Beach (5 minute walk), across the street from the Metro Stop, and on the major busline. Complimentary WiFi throughout the property and a provided laptop helped us to plan events and stay in touch. The entry uses a coded lock system so we never had to worry about losing a key or being locked out. The kitchen is a fully-loaded spacious room with all the high-end appliances a chef could desire. (Viking range, subzero fridge) We held a rehearsal dinner Feijoada for 70 people with ease. We wanted to serve beer for the dinner and a staff member arranged for a complete draft system to be delivered. (Keg, Refrigerator, taps, cups, and coasters) We had 15 people (including 2 kids) comfortably stay at the Villa. We converted the library into another bedroom to help out with space. Each day we were greeted by a full breakfast spread made up of fruit, breads, pastries, eggs, yogurt, juice, coffee, tea, chocolate milk, etc. The staff varied the breakfast and treated us to first-class meals each day. (the stuffed French toast is amazing!) Each day at least three staff members arrived early in the morning to quietly make breakfast, clean, water the plants, do laundry, etc. The staff provided excellent customer service. If we had any questions or needs, there was a staff person available to take care of it. I was extremely impressed by the service and care taken with this property.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

The house is perfect to accommodate a large group as it has a lot of room. The staff was very helpful and friendly. They prepared breakfast, arranged transport from airport and organized tours around the city. The house is full of antiques so be careful if you bring kids!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, people with disabilities, girls getaway.

I and my group of friends are pretty frequent Brazilian travelers and this year opted for a few days in Rio and then Carnaval in Salvador Bahia ( a first experience). The three nights at the villa were so packed full of delight - that I am glad we choose not to stay in a beachfront hotel. I did not have clear expectations about what a house rental would be like but with the size of the group and the non availability of affordable rooms - short stay in the villa ws the only solution. Great fortune on our part. So much has been written that is difficult to say more. Everything about this incredible house and its staff and its style of making you at home is worthy of an award. I spent one morning in the library with the house guest book which I retrieved fro the entry hall table, reading all the messages from people all over the world who have stayed here and penned their wishes and feelings. It is obvious that this place has quite a fan club and I am but the newest member. Thank you Michael and Adan for all your superb planning and creative thinking. Thank yoy Kelly, Marcia, and Marcos for your kind care. You occupy a special place with us. No one does it better than you guys. I fear it will be hard to reserve relatively late as we did this time.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.

This is my second stay and my second review of the villa. It is hard to imagine that this mansion which received my highest rating in 2008 - could find room for change. Decoration and service was then over the top The third floor was partially under construction while I was there - an expansion of the pool area, a new bathroom, and some changes to the little 2 story house on the top floor back in the garden. The new garden layouts and more tropical feel with the birds in cages is marvelous. Adan, the local owner and manager showed us the new colors as the house is being repainted top to bottom. It would seem that this group never stops - always improving, changing, a fresh feel, different menus, but the same smiles from the same wonderful staff. It feels like coming home. Met Raul, the owner of the villa's affiliated tour group - Rios de Historias and booked two walking tours thru him. I felt that spending a few hours with someone so passionate about the history of Rio de Janeiro has given me a whole new perspective on my adopted city. Our last day was spent on a drive to Petropolis and lunch at the Pousada in Araras. Magnificent. The totally redecorated libray, living room-atrium, and three second floor bedrooms give a very English feel to the place. The pink color of the morning room, the black marble fireplace, and the mossy green carpet are unbelievable. Luckily - the kitchen is the same. Just more chefs tools. Adan explained that the office is being moved to the third floor and in May - there will be new baking center and ice machine in its place due to all the receptions and functions being held at the Villa. Half of the villas air conditioning was changed in April and the other half will be changed in May. No interruptions for us though. Thanks to Paula, Kelly, Ceara and Marcia who pampered us beyond belief. There is some very new internet service changes which will bring Rio into a league ready to host the World Cup. Our internet service was spotty at times due to the changes. For the inconvenience - the Villa hosted a full sit down breakfast for the week we were there. Pancakes, waffles, casseroles - the whole range. I must say that considering the huge amount of construction - we were never bothered and the villa was set to shine every day when we returned from our tours. I am looking forward to the Olympics and our third trip with a stay at the Villa. Once you find a spot like this - you never change.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

This was a special family vacation and our first in Rio de Janeiro. Adan, Paula, Kelly and Marcia were super hosts and we left feeling like we had made a perfect choice in reserving this house. It is both beautiful yet so homey and charming. A lot of thought has gone into creating this very special place. And a lot more thought into how to five guest an experience that they are unlikely to forget. Our family of 17 ranges in ages from 17 to 82 and everyone was enchanted. The staff just seemed to really enjoy all of the children around. The last dinner at the Villa was one which will always be with us - a great family candlelit dinner with an incredible cake baked by Marcia. Unbelievable. Adan and the owner had bought gifts and wrapped them and had them under the incredible Atrium Christmas tree. Little things but they meant so very much to us all. The Villa gets the very top rating in al the email communications with Michael (the owner) and all the help in many phone calls helping us arranging our days tour. Another top rating to the huge Villa Manual which we received before our trip covering so many suggestions and a wealth of information. Marcos our driver was like part of the family after the week. We are talking about a return trip but unfortunately Olympics is not available. But we will return.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers.

Everything about the villa rental was over the top - from the first email response from the owner - thru the meticulous planning with him - the week of Rio expenses - and the farewell they threw for us. It is one thing to rent a house and enjoy a city. It is totally different expenrience for me to have a group go so far of their way to make sure we experienced the best of their city and saw things that we could not have quite imagined. We met Michael the owner on our last morning there and he got an ovation when he walked in. Their villa manual is unique and better than any single guidebook on Rio de Janeiro. Our thanks to Adan, the wonderful maids, our drivers, and our super chef -Marcia. Your birthday cake was truly an amazing and beautiful surprise. To find out you made all those different flowers yourself was amazing. This house is graced with beauty, laugther, and love.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, tourists without a car, girls getaway.

Every detail about the Villa was A+++. The owner was apologetic that he could not offer a longer stay but worked with my family and I to house us in 2 properties during our week vacation in Rio de Janeiro. I can see why it is called the marvelous city. The Villa is far more beautiful in reality than the pictures on the internet could ever demonstrate. The gardens A riot of flowers and colors along with the menagerie of birds. All of the major rooms in the house including our bedrooms had freshened flowers daily. The Staff is beyond compare. Such a bunch of sweet, dedicated, and smiling young people who obviously enjoy their work. We have never felt so well cared for in any other hotel or private home. Breakfast daily was treat. The guides and drivers arranged by Adan were fun and became fast buddies with some of our teenagers. I don't think it will be possible to have sampled more of true Rio than that which was provided for us by Mike and his team. The only incredible Christmas decoration we saw while in Rio was the Villa - and it was over the top. There is no single guide book about spending time in Rio that I would rank as highly as the on the Villa sent us shortly after our reservation. We enjoyed Copacabana much more than Ipanema as we were made to feel at home there. Even our last night in Rio which had to be spent at the neighboring hotel since there was another party checking in was special. The staff moved us in and it was pretty clear that the hotel staff knows and pampers the villa guests.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We are currently on a 9 Day stay here in Rio and this property is a beautiful Oasis in the heart of hustling bustling Copacabana. As pictured, the small pool on the roof is reminiscent of a Morrocan plunge pool and roof terrace. Exquisite. Great for catching some rays or having a drink by at night. The sweltering heat in Rio can make it a stuufy place and this is THE best place to come and cool down. The hosts are extremely hospitable, catering for our every need and with smiles on their faces. Rio has a reputation for thiefs and pickpockets, but we've seen nothing of this and feel very safe in this closed off road, with security gate and guard. We've had wonderful Brazilian and International cuisine since being here, cooked by the inhouse chef. Fresh Juice, exotic fruit and hearty breakfast have been a main stay. Whenever peckish we have been readily supplied with tasty treats in between meals also! The large double bedrooms are very roomy and eloquently designed, the place oozes charm and class in equal measure A definite 10/10 in every concievable category! Go visit!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

About the owner: Mike is a dentist in NYC who graduated from Michigan State University Hotel Restaurant School. He was the architect and the designer for this house and is in Rio monthly 'tending to details' Adam is a business school grad from the University of Mexico City and moved to Brazil to wed Paula - who is working on her PhD in Biochemistry here. She is a farmers daughter from Mato Grosso and works with us on our dining menu. Raul - handles all tours and bookings, theater tickets, sports tickets, and sport and outdoor activities. His group Rios de Historia holds the Number ONE spot on trip adviser dot com in the THINGS TO DO section. He has almost 200 guest reviews on that site. He and his wife Priscilla are active historians who live in an old 1890's suburb of Rio de Janeiro. To browse outdoor adventures, overnight and day trips - ecotourism, climbing, hiking,, kayaking, white water rafting, helicopters, parachuting, paragliding check out their offerings at rioadventures dot com.
Why the Owner Chose Rio de Janeiro:
Mike lost his passport some 13 years ago and had to return to the city and wait 3 days before getting it replaced. He found the Copacabana Palace kind of boring and checked Lonely Planet for a better hotel choice. He ended up at the Atlantico Copacabana which overlooked the property the villla is now situated on. He fell in love with the neighborhood, the street, and the rest is history.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
You can design the perfect vacation for your family or group needs.
