Enjoy family living on Lake Toxaway this summer, fall or forever. This four bedroom lakefront home is within walking distance to Greystone Inn where you can indulge in facials, manicures and massages. A pontoon boat provides a floating platform that shows off spectacular lake views. In addition, a nice dip in the lake down by the dam can provide just the departure from - well - most things.

Oscar the Mule Deer, seated above the fireplace, is waiting to share country living at its best. He's really excited that we chose to mount his whole head as opposed to his cousin who wound up contributing only his antlers to our hanging lamp. Anyway, the fireplace is without peer - Grove Park Inn, notwithstanding. Once you get a good bed of coals going, you will watch the fire more than the TV - guaranteed. The drapes in the living room are room darkening so a nice fire in the middle of a sunny afternoon with the drapes drawn (and maybe HBO with mute enabled) can help provide relief from too much night before or another bad headline from the WSJ... just a thought.

Beautiful summer days and crisp mountain evenings await your family and friends, including your pets. If you don't have one of the best night's sleep in any of the King beds, I'll buy you a pizza at Brown Trout. Just tell Cliff you didn't sleep well at 36 West Shore and he'll know what to do.

The picture of the house shows the garage and opposite of it is the kitchen. The one upstairs bedroom that does not face the lake is also shown between the two. The main floor master bedroom faces the lake and has its own bath that can double as the main floor powder room. (We always make the kids use the upstairs baths during the all important intermission from too much Dora.) The master also has sliding door access to the back porch with a private sitting area for morning coffee and evening Stingers. The living room is 22x13 so it is plenty big enough to accommodate everyone who stays at the house. Some very large karaoke parties have been held in this room. There are 2 sliding glass doors that lead to the back porch. The dining room is good sized (we've seated 22 for Thanksgiving Dinner and a buffet line), faces the lake and has a sliding glass door to the covered back porch where the ping pong table resides. As we've gotten older, ping pong has yielded to beer pong. For details on this great game and what is required of the losing team, contact me directly. The kitchen is very complete from a cooking standpoint: upper and lower ovens, 4 burner electric stove and plenty of dishes, glasses, pans and utensils. There are 2 refrigerators available so the wine, beer and cokes have a home of their own. The laundry room is off the kitchen. The washer is a horizontal axis type that can hold all bed linens at once. I think I've put 22 towels in at one time so turnover is in hours, not days, if you want the kids to wash everything while you are out on the pontoon boat trying to figure out which house is Alan Jackson's. The 3 upstairs bedrooms share 2 baths with one of the rooms being set up as a "suite". One of the upstairs rooms has a very large closet that houses a baby crib which works out well. There is a saftey gate stowed in the linen closet at the top of the steps.

The boathouse is a rather large (25x25) additional outdoor gathering area for day or night. The view of the lake from the house and boathouse is east-northeast so clear nights can provide excellent moon rise parties - these can be short, though, as it only takes the moon about 9 minutes before everybody starts looking for something else to do. It's dark at night in Toxaway so if you're in from a well lighted city like Asheville or Miami, the kids will enjoy the true planetarium effect of lying on their backs on the boathouse roof and observing actual stars as well as the crisscrossing satellites. There is 110AC at the boathouse for cell phone recharging as the teens always seem to do all their calling and texting away from the main group.

Vacation on the lake for less than you lost last week in the world markets. We have several nice people available for cleaning or odds and ends if you stay longer and need some household help while you are finishing up your manicure. Why ruin a good manicure with housework anyway? Better to leave right for the Brown Trout and let somebody else vacuum up the chips.

Directions to the house: you can take either entrance in to Toxaway, but the main entrance on Hwy 64/281 seems to have the most directional signs to the Greystone Inn. So, follow the signs to the Greystone and take the first right just before the tennis courts near the Inn (West Shore Drive). Proceed down this little road for a minute or two and turn left into the next to the last driveway. The house is visible from the road and the mailbox is numbered (36 WSD). The phone number at the house is listed on the handsets. If the phone rings while you are there, (and you haven't given out our number) feel free to answer it if you feel like brushing up on your skills for turning down either the Satellite TV dudes or some new long distance player who just arrived in the area. Otherwise, feel free to disconnect the phones during your stay.

RENTAL NEWS FLASH! We've completed 70 VRBO Rentals with over 500 total guests this past four seasons and all of the families said they had a nice time and most left the house in a condition that made our transition text book for us - which always means good things for those that follow - thanks for your help.

  • Suitability
    • Pet Friendly : We're dog people. We like responsible pet owners like ourselves. Our neighbors aren't as pet friendly, however.
    • Wheelchair Accessible (may have limitations) : We have older relatives who stay with us and use both a walker and a mobilized electric wheel chair with no problems on the main floor. We just move to an upstairs bedroom and let the wheeled wonders have their way. The main floor bath is not handicap equipped, but there is plenty of room to maneuver and the shower is almost flush with the floor.
    • Kid Friendly : The place is fairly bullet-proof. There are several staircases that need to be respected for the little ones.
    • Smoking Not Allowed : There are plenty of nice covered and open areas outdoors to sit and have a smoke. A late evening (after the Brown Trout, of course) on the boathouse with a port or decaf while the other half indulges in a perfectly humidified Montecristo will rival many other evening choices. BTW, there is an 8 cigar Humidor on site and at your service.

we've stayed at several VRBO homes before and NONE lived up to the listings. That was until last week. Mikes house is so much better in reality than the listing. this is not to slight the listing but to praise the home. Absolutely gorgeous! Wonderfully efficient house and the setting/view in nothing short of a Slice of Heaven! Instead of departing we were ready to buy it and stay forever. Thanks Mike for being the best host we've ever dealt with. we'll be back!

Owner response:Thanks Terry for the kind words. Great guests drive our interest to remain a good host. We take people's desire to have a nice slice of time in our home, seriously. Looking forward to your return.

Mike, The house was great. Very comfortable and had everything we needed. We enjoyed our stay at Lake Toxaway and hope to go back again next year. The boat made it even better. You have a beautiful lake there.

Absolutely wonderful! The house was exactly as advertised - comfortable, clean and set up for complete enjoyment by the guests. We had a full house with, at times, as many as 15 young adults and four (not so much) older adults. Everyone had plenty of space and, with the toys provided by the property owner, everyone had plenty of fun. Thanks Mike, We're looking forward to doing it again.

Test question from Mike: which symbol best describes the relationship between the web narrative and the deliverable at 36 West Shore Drive: less than, equal to, or greater than? Well, I can't answer that, but now, you may for those future travelers to 174592.
